I don't think Shaan or Papon are underrated.

Shaan sings regularly in regional movies

his tanha dil is still heard and that song is about 20 yr old now.

and Papon is a big name in folk and indie music field

Not everyone suits the run off mill music of bw movies and Thank God diff kinds of music are made to suit the voices.

for movies, usually music directors go for tried and tested singers who makes song popular. There are lots of songs which someone else can sing much better but would not be as popular. Like from recent time, the song mohe rang do laal, a singer rooted in Indian classical music and yet sweet voice, like kaushiki could have sung it much better than shreya.

yeah but fact about indian industry is ...singer wohe hai jo bollywood main gata hai as they are only one who get popularity and stuff rest they faded out or strive for their bread and butter bollywood music have occupied almost every aspect of indian music ...i remember once Sonu Nigam told rahul vadiua and abhijeet sawant that ..."Sirf bollywood music aim mat banana ...bollywood music ne hamare independent music ke band bajaye huwe hai"...Sonu himself was a big part of independed music back in 90's with Jaan , Yaad , Kismat , Dewana albums ...

he recently released some beautiful singles too

But yes, Bollywood tends to go haywire on tried and tested formulae. Hence the success of people like Alka Yagnik and Shreya Ghoshal

ESPECIALLY in terms of female singers, there is far too little experimentation.

Voices like Monali Thakur, Shilpa Rao, Neeti Mohan, don't get as much playback opportunities

on the other hand, people like Palak Mucchal, whom I find an extremely mediocre singer, get tons of playback opportunities because she has that formulaic, sweet, high pitched voice.
