For a student to know that his/her prof is a phD is not special knowledge.
What I meant was about the general usage of the title doctor as Dr in the community.
You may refer to your prof as Doctor but he/she may not be refered to as a Dr in the general society,with acquaintances outside the university ,by the vegetable seller, his neighbours,, his lawyer,his relatives.

My mother is a PhD Microbiologist and I am Pediatrician. I am refered to as doctor in our community but she is not.It's not a title i claim rights to it's just how it is.
To her phD candidates she might be refered to as prof or Doctor.
