Chapter 62
Lakshya frowned into the distance. This was their second day in Haridwar. They had done the round of temples, taken in the sights, the girls had gone shopping as planned... but there was something amiss.
When they'd been bundling themselves into the car at Uttarkashi the previous morning, Ragini had asked Sanskaar if she could sit in the front seat next to the driver.
"Of course!" Sanskaar had said and then, with a gentle hand on her shoulder, "You're ok?"
She had nodded. "Bas, aise hi!"
"Sure," he said, "just, belt up, alright?"
She had spent the whole journey staring out at the mountains, absorbed in her own thoughts, eating very little but accepting tea more readily when they stopped. Some people did become withdrawn when they travelled but... Lakshya didn't like it.
She wasn't speaking much to him at all - or at least, responding when spoken to, and then keeping talk to the minimum. At Haridwar she'd become more animated but that was purely for Swara's benefit, he realised. He knew her quite thoroughly now... and she had something on her mind.

The last couple of months had been a significant turn for Ragini. She had come face to face with her own behaviour, her own motivations... and now surrounded by these mountains that were the ultimate refuge of the renunciate, it made her feel smaller still... how she had greedily grabbed at the things she wanted when true elegance lay in letting go.
She had made her peace with Swara - her generous sister had forgiven her from the heart - but she had done wrong by Lakshya as well. Married him in spite of knowing that his love belonged to another. His sorrow at having let Swara down, his own misery at being so cruelly parted from her... he had put these behind him... but they surely lurked in some corner of his being.
She had taken over his life, without giving him a say in the matter. He was continuing to be by her side because he had been cheated into holding her hand in marriage. She could not give back what she had taken... Swara was happy and irrevocably bonded to Sanskaar but... could she make some reparation to him?
