For the first few hours, I was at my office, speaking to my boss about my situation and they understood.
After all, my wife was dying and the situation was very complicated.
It was not easy for me.
While I was in my office, Naintara had called me to tell me that everything was okay.
I was glad that Naintara was with Geet ... I found out that when Geet disappeared for over a week, she had gone to stay with Dev and Naintara .
I was a bit upset that they had kept it from me, but more than that, I was glad that she had bonded with my friends.
Geet's mom also called me when I was in my office, asking where I was.
I told her I was at my office, but was going to go about getting some medicines soon.
On the way to the pharmacy, there was a lot of traffic and a horrible network problem, so it was taking longer than I wanted it to.
I was stuck in traffic for a few hours, and when I got to the pharmacy and asked to get my prescription filled, they asked me to wait even longer because they have to make these medicines.
Since it was not a typical request, it took them two hours to fill the prescription.
By that time, I had already been out of the house for eight hours.
As I stepped outside of the pharmacy and was walking through a dark alley beside it to get to my car, I took out my phone and saw that I had missed so many of Dev's and Naintara's calls due to the signal.
I opened my text message inbox and saw seven unread messages, from Dev and Naintara
Where are you?
Geet is in labour!
Maan where are you??? Come to the main hospital!
She's getting worse Maan... come!!!
Maan ANSWER YOUR GODDAMN PHONE!
Maan YOU WILL REGRET THIS.
PLEASE COME SOON.
HER CONDITION IS CRITICAL!
My hands were shaking as I read all of that, and the drugs I had picked up for her had fallen to the ground.
Nothing was registering in my mind.
What was happening? I dialed Dev's number.
As soon as I heard the first ring, I felt something hard hit my head from behind, making me dizzy.
"DE -DEV?" I said out loud, into the phone as soon as I heard him pick up.
I turned around to see someone with a large metal rod and blood on the rod my blood.
"Maan she's dying," Dev said over the phone, and he sounded like he was on the verge of tears.
"Maan get here... quick... she won't make it... please."
My phone dropped from my hands and fell to the ground with a loud thud.
I looked up at the large man who was holding the rod, and I fell to my knees and let my head fall forward.
I had no reason to fight.
Maybe I was a coward, but right now, I was thanking God for sending an angel like this to me, so that Geet wouldn't have to leave this world alone.
She would have her Maan, leaving with her, right beside her.
He hit me with the metal rod again, and that was when I passed out.
My story isn't over yet though.
I wasn't dead.
I was still breathing. And when I woke up, still alive, Geet was right beside me.
I brought her a vase with twelve roses.
I didn't tell her that the last one was fake.
As she lay in her bed,
and I put the vase on the side table next to her,
she looked at me with surprise.
"Those are beautiful," she said.
"They are, aren't they?" I asked her, admiringly.
"How many are there?" she asked.
"Twelve," I told her simply.
"Why did you bring twelve?" she asked me softly.
"Because Geet, when the twelfth one dies, you will breathe your last,"
I said with a smile.
I took her hand in mine and kissed it softly, as she looked at the roses with awe.
"Twelve roses... I'll die when the last one dies," she repeated.
"Deal?" I asked her softly.
"Deal," she promised with a smile.
My eyes opened as that memory played in my mind.
I knew I was weak, and I knew I was going to die.
It was inevitable.
I felt a soft hand on my wrist.
I turned around to look at her, Geet.
My Geet.
I was in the hospital, and she was sitting beside me.
