Do promotions really help a film?

I was just reading Alia, Sid and Fawad's interview where each of them seemed a tad bid confused about all these promotions and more about how much they help a film and I honestly feel they are correct much. These days the PR and marketing teams/directors plan extensive marketing tours. Moving from one city to another just within a span of 15-20 days. But does it really help?If we take Fitoor as an example their effectiveness seem too little. Because the screens were hardly 40% filled on even the first and second day. If we say marketing helps in bringing the audience on first weekend and thereafter WOM works, this theory too has been proved wrong in many cases. But on the contrast if we see films like Jai Gangajal, many people said that it didnt work because Priyanka gave up on it completely. So I wonder whats exactly the right way to promote it?
As an audience I would say what works for me is the 'vibe' I get from the movie. Like most of the times the trailers themselves speak if the film will be boring or bad.

But one thing I hv noticed these stars do promote the film wrongly these days. They go to malls, restros, colleges, give intvs for twitter etc. But isnt this really baout tageting just the youth? Why not air promos/trailers on GECs like SP, Colors , Zee etc? Or may be news or sports channels. That could be great idea to promote.

It helps.Neerja promotions were so much different and useful and ppl get to know about neerja and they want to know more about her and there promotions helped.
K&s promotions were less compared to other movies. Srk does slam tours for his movies.
Promos/trailers /songs are on every channels these days. Zee/abp/star here every channel on air 24/7.
About gangajal2 pj looked not so happy with pc he says that if priyanka would have been in promotions it would have been great help and movie minted more I watched on zee cinema.
About flop movies and there promotions I say if there's no content promotions cannot save it at all.same happened with fitoor.
I really loved neerja team strategy in promotions also the way they handled critics. I also like zoya and her way of promotions.
Also just now remember when Neerja released at that time loveshudda released too and its songs dialogues pretty much on every channel as compared to Neerja. But as soon opening day passed wom gets stronger.the channels start showing more Neerja trailers /promos.
Kjo also said about k&s that they will not promote more than 5weeks and he wants promotions to be finished now he wants old days back like kkhh time when there was no promotions.only trailer used to come. And ppl used to go on release date.

Agree with the other comments about Neerja..

Promotions do work, but only if they are done smartly.

Fitoor was promoted extensively, but I feel the problem with romantic films are that they try to sell the "chemistry" way too hard... Yes,it is true that the main selling points for romantic films are the chemistry and the music. But doing cheap gimmicks like they did for Tamasha is not gonna work anymore imo.

Absolutely yes.
Promotions help EVERY film.
Without promo, Fitoor would have opened at far less than 40%.
The reason why it didn't open higher is because the audience were not enticed by the content.

Yeah without the advertisements how will the fans know to go see the film . Unless their fortune tellers or something that look into globes and make weird faces 😆
