The trial ran for almost 2 yrs and caught the interest of the common man as well as the elite..everybody watched the trial diligently for the handsome commander Nanavati..everybody had an opinion and there was rumoured to be some political controversy too involving nehru, vijayalakshmi pandit and others...he was assumed to have access to naval secrets and hence his life imprisonment was withdrawn and he was a free man.
But popular version is that he was a upright , honest officer and his actions were caused by genuine despair and anguish and hence his sentence was withdrawn
Whatever it is it was the most famous and most shocking case of the 1950s
