Chapter 3
Maaneet wedding was conducted on a grand scale. Of course, no noisy functions were held but all rituals were completed within few hours. Marriage was legally registered, copies of certs were collected and everyone returned home after 4 days. They were soo
happy that finally geet cud relax without any more trouble.
After lunch that afternoon, ladies were sitting in the huge lounge room, geet was lying on rano's lap and all were chatting away merrily. Just then, a maid came forward holdin the cordless and gave it to rano saying it was her sister's call. Rano took it and
hung up in two minutes. She looked worried about something.
Dadi and shivani guessed it, and asked her what was up.
"Meri behen pammi apni beti kamya ke sath aa rahi hai kal. Wo yaha rahegi kuch din." Rano replied looking at geet nervously.
"Oh no! geet groaned. Ab dekhna mumma, kamya muje phir tang karegi. She complained.
"Kamya tuje tang karti hai bache?" Shivani asked her. " Haan mom. Wo na muje raat mei sone nai deti. Meri toys vi kharab kar deti hai. Last time aayi thi tab usne meri wo angel wali skirt tear kar di, jo aap meri b'day ko leke aye." Geet complained very cutely.
Dadi and shivani decided to watch out for kamya. The girl sounded bothersome. Rasno too did not like her behavior but kept quiet as she dint wanna hurt her sis.
Next morning:
Geet was sitting on her bed, waiting for maan to finish his bath. They wud go to the dining hall together as geet was given to running down the stairs. Maan wanted to take her safely, as her feet could slip on the smooth marble floor. Coming out of the shower, maan dressed and picked up his phone to answer the call exiting the room for proper reception. Geet went to the balcony, enjoying the cool breeze. She had only stood there for a minute when something weighed heavily upon her and she felt a strong tug in her head. "Owww! she cried out in pain. Someone was pulling her hair with slight force. Then she heard mischievous laughter.
She turned in confusion and saw her cousin kamya, making silly faces and clutching her hair. Geet said, "kamya mere bal choro." But the girl kept on tugging them more. As geet yowled in pain once more, shivani appeared at the door and glared at the mean girl in front.
"Kamya, geet ko chodo." She roared angrily. Kamya instantly left geet and came out of the balcony. Geet was rubbing her head. Shivani went to her and made her sit on the bed. Then she applied warm ointment on geet's head where kamya had pulled her hair. Geet's pain lessened and she sighed in relief.
"Geetu, dining mei jao, maan aur dadi wait kar rae hain." She said and the girl went downstairs. Kamya started following her but shivani stopped her and asked the reason for pulling geet's hair.
"aunty, mei bas geet ko surprise kar rai thi." Kamya replied grinning. "Ye koi surprise nai hoti kamya, tumgeet ko hurt kar rai thi. Muje tumara bartav bilkul acha nai laga. Try to behave yourself while you are here." Shivani warned her and left.
Dinign room:
Pammi and kamya were seated and geet went to take her chair. Just then, pammi stopped her saying, " Are geet puttar, tum baith kaise rahi ho? Sabse pehle kitchen se sab items lekar aao. Table set kar ke sab ko serve karo, tabhi tum khaogi. Ab tumari shadi ho gai hai. Tum ne hi sabko nashta, lunch aur dinner serve karna chahiye." Pammi taunted geet slyly.
Geet just gaped at the mother-daughter. Poor girl did not know what meant by kitchen or chores, how cud she serve all the food or even set the table? She stood there with a shrunken face, just then shivani and all others came from behind. They had heard every word and were fuming at pammi.
Shivani said, "Pammi, kya patti padha rai ho meri beti ko?" "kuch nai bhai, said Pammi. " Main to bas geet ko samjha rai thi ki ab iski shadi hui hai to isne pehle sab ko khana serve karke phir baad mei khana chaiye. " "Ab to iski duty banti hai na." Pammi grinned around.
Dadima replied, "Pammi, geet ghar ki maid nai hamari bachi hai. Serve karne ka kaam maid ka hota hai. Waise aap ne ye sare family manners kamya ko to sikhye hongi hi. To kyu nai aaj kamya hum logo ko serve kare? Humei bhi to pata chale ki Aap ki beti in kaamo mei kitni expert hai!" Dadima teased pammi unmercifully.
Now kamya had no choice but to accept. She knew they cud not refuse dadima. Mahesh indicated her to follow him. Kamya went straight to the kitchen where butlers were piling food bowls on trays. Vinod handed her one tray laden with bowls and crockery. Then they all went outside again kamya following them. She was about to put the plates down when Dadi ma said, "Rukiye kamya. Pehle tablecloth spread kijiye. uske pehle serve kar rai ho aap?"
Nakul helped kamya hold the tablecloth and they spread it together. Then the girl arranged the bowls, crockery and cutlery along with the staff. Jugs full of water and fresh juice, glasses for serving drinks and dessert pots came next. Kamya laid out everything laboriously. She was about to start serving food when shobit interrupted her saying that she forgot the warm milk for geet. He asked her to get it from the kitchen. Kamya nodded her head and again went to bring the milk. Deepak showed her the kettle and took ouit the mug and spoon. He put in haldi powder and half spoon sugar. Then he had kamya pour out the milk. She did it carefully in case the milk spilled out and someone again scolded her.
Then deepak put the mug carefully on the small tray and asked kamya to take it outside. Kamya was seething in anger. She carried the tray to the table and served the milk to geet. But she banged the mug slightly while putting it down. Geet jumped with the sound and the three men glared at kamya.
"Kya kar rai ho tum? Tum ko theek se serve karna nai ata? Shobit burst out and carefully inspected geet's arm to check if she got burned. But the girl was okay so he said nothing. Kamya then served the breakfast for everyone rapidly. Twenty minutes went on like this. Finally serving her own plate, she sat down. Running around all the time and arranging all the things had exhausted her. Kamya was tired and hungry, also irritated as she was made to work so much before eating. Everyone ate silently. Half an hour later, breakfast was over and staff cleared away the table and other things. Maan, dadi ma and mohinder were smiling in their sleeves. Pammi was unable to utter a single word, because nobody wud stand the slightest nonsense from her. Bidding geet and the ladies goodbye, the men left for office. Dadi ma, geet and rano went to the garden with shivani while pammi and kamya went to their room.
Kamya sat with both hands dipped in a hot water bowl. Her hands were aching due to the weighty crockery she had held to serve food. Hailing from a rich family herself from her late father's side, even kamya was not used to doing such kind of work. She burst out at her mom. "Mom, apko kya zarurat thi geet ko kuch bolne ki? Aap ki wajah se Maan ki dadi aur parents ne muje kitna daudaya kaam kar ne ke liye. Mere dono hath toot rahe hai." She whimpered in pain.
"Beta, mai to geet ko sabke samne inferior prove karna cha rai thi. Muje kya pata tha ki Khuranas itna gussa ho jayenge! Wo sab usko bahot pyar karte hai. I think geet ko unse dur karne ke liye itna kafi nai hoga. Kuch idea se hi geet ko is ghar se hatana padega. Tabhi tum is ghar mei geet ki jagah par maan se shadi karke aa sakogi. Yaha tum ko hona chaiye, na ki geet ko." Pammi soothed her daughter. She wowed to get kamya wedded to maan anyhow by hook or by crook.
