Chapter 5
The next morning:
After finishing breakfast everyone was sitting in the garden, just then shivani came there beaming with happiness. Looking at her expressions no one could understand anything at first, but then she held forward some paper report and swooping on geet, hugged her lovingly with a wide smile.
"Mera bachha bataya bhi nai ki first aaya exams mei. Aur chup chap ice cream bhi khai celebrate karne. Very naughty of you. But aap ne top score laayi na 98.87% so, mom ko gussa nahi hai." She finished proudly while taking a seat on willow couch.
On getting the news of geet's top score result everyone was simply thrilled. It was then that mohinder and shobit understood the last night's prowling game and both of them glared at Daadi ma. Poor soul, she was like a deer caught in the path of headlights as her sons and rano's eyes froze over her.
"Mom you are so irresponsible. Aap aise kaise bacho ki tarah chori se ice-cream kha sakti hain? Aap ko doctor ne mana kiya hai, phir bhi aap ne khai, upar se ab aap ne geet ko bhi apne saath shaamil kar liya, very naughty of you." Mohinder declared angrily.
But geet jumped in and said, "Papa, please aap kyu daadi ji ko daat rahe hain? Please aap gussa nai karo, aaj hum sab na celebrate karenge." She said so cutely that all of them were melted and began to plan a cool party right then.
Maan decided to invite all their friends from the art design academy and junior college. Soon, invitations were sent out, menu was planned and the whole palace was tastefully decorated, sparkling clean and beautiful. All of maaneet's friends, puja, gauri, samira, angad, kripa, prithvi and pinky, adi along with rohit arrived on time. Even the elders got a lot of free time together.
Kamya was sitting at a table slowly drinking some juice as pammi was out to meet some old friends. She saw everyone sharing in geet's success. Feeling a slight pang of loneliness,
she came forward and tapping geet on the shoulder said in a
well-mannered tone, "Well done geet. Congratulations for topping your exams."
Geet smiled thanking her as maan and everyone looked somewhat surprised. It was really rare to see kamya behaving
in such a civil manner. But they were nonetheless happy that the girl had picked up at least few nice things from her father's good natured traits. Perhaps kamya wasn't so bad after all, they assumed.
The drinking and fun went on till 6 in the evening. Then all guests went home, and maaneet retired to their room for some rest. But rano was little bit restless. As she sat on the couch thinking quietly, pammi came and sat beside her. Laying a hand on her sister's knee, the crafty woman smoothly began to poison her ears.
" Mai jant thi rano, aaj nahi to kal ye hona hi thaa. I really pity you dear." Pammi was all the time watching rano from the corner of her eye. But rano came out of her thoughts and stared at her sister in surprise. What could she be talking about?
Kya kehna chahti ho pammi, plz muje saaf saaf batao. Meri samajh mei kuch nai aa raha hai.
Again pammi said, Ab waise mera shayad kuch kehne ka to haq nahi banta. Par tumhe nai lagta, ki shivani aaj kal geet par kuch zyada hi haq jatane lagi hai?" Geet tumhari beti hai, abhi bachi aur bholi hai.
"Par tum to samajhdar ho" she again went on. Koi kuch bhi kahe par shivani hai to geet ki saas hi na. Par usne geet par kuch aisa jadu kar diya hai, ki bachi apni maa ko chhod uski goahd mei rehti hai sara waqt. Don't you think tumhe shivani ko geet se thoda dur rakhna chahiye?
Dekho pammi, rano said, "Shivani mujh se zyada pyar karti hai meri beti se. Uska mujh se zyada dhyaan bhi rakhti hai. Muje meri dosti par pura bharosa hai." She confidently replied. But pammi wouldn't give up so easily. She again cried, "Rano main andhi nahi hoon. Maine dekha ki kaise puri party ke dauran geet sirf shivani se lipti hui thi. Tumhara to hosh bhi nahi tha usko.
Tumhari beti tum se dur jaa rahi hai rano. Plz kuch karo, warna kal shayad shivani ki dhun mein, tum geet ko yaad bhi nahi aaogi. Pammi finished with a secret evil smile and grinning innocently at her sister, went away from there.
Rano brooded over pammi's words and felt that after all, she was geet's mother and deserved her daughter's love and attention. And indeed shivani was truly possessive about geet. But was she, rano wrong in wanting to love and pet her child, to yearn for hugging her, one look from her? She recalled how geet wasn't even looking at her in the party only for a little moment when shivani went to talk to some guest, else geet had very little time for her mamma these days.
Rano decided to talk to shivani and get her baby back anyhow. So she stood up and went to shobit's room where geet and maan were giggling away with shivani. Clearing her throat she said aloud, "Kya baat hai, badi hasi ho rahi hai?" Shivani welcomed her with smiles and the kids hugged rano but she said, "Maan puttar, zara jaa ke meri design file check kar lo kaha rakhi maine. Muje mil nai rahi." Maan promptly went out with geet.
Then rano came straight to the point,"Shivani tum aakhir kya sabit karna chahti ho? Kyu tum ne geet ko mujh se dur karne ki saazish ki hai? Kya tum nai chahti ki meri bachi meri taraf dekhe? Why are you separating me from my daughter? Plz ab geet ko mere paas aane do. Tum ne itne saalo mei meri bachi aur mere beech me ek andekhi si diwar khadi kar di hai."
Shivani sttod there dumbstruck. She could not believe her ears. Was this really happening in their home, their heaven? Was this really her bosom friend rano talking to her in this way?
What was wrong with her all of a sudden? Shivani knew she and shobit loved geet more than their son maan. Was it a sin? Did they do wrong by doing so? Were they really in the wrong to treat geet as their foremost priority?
Shivani's eyes were glistening with unshed tears as her heart was shattered. Rano's words pierced her like thousand thorns. She opened her mouth to say something but just then geet came with rano's file and hearing the argument, her smile faded and eyes widened with disbelief.
How could her mama talk to mom like that? They were friends, almost sisters in all terms. Geet was really upset and angry with rano just then. She glared at her mamma unaware that rano was smiling at her and as she came forward hugging her warmly, geet threw her hands away and spat out, "Aap bahot gandi ho mamma. Bahot buri hain aap. How could say such things to mom? Aap ne kyu meri mom ko itna hurt kiya? Main aap se katti, main kabhi phir aap se baat nai karungi, aap meri achhi mamma nahi hain."
Geet ran away to her room with a loud sob. Shivani followed unable to stand her friends accusations. Rano was shocked as geet had spoken to her in such a loud voice for the first time in 18 years. How could her baby get so angry with her? Then the enormity of her words struck rano and she sat on the bed with shock cursing herself.
She realized that pammi had tricked her. She deliberately filled poison in her mind so as to separate the two families. Pammi being her sister was jealous of her and wished to damage her friendship with shivani. And sadly rano had done the blunder by hurting her friend and daughter. Now, what could they do?
Will geet forgive her mamma? Will rano and shivani gain their friendship and warm relation back? Will the distances get destructed on their own? It is a very tough question, so wait for the answer.
