In a new role
Chaya Unnikrishnan
He's recently entered into a JV with UTV, is part of a singing contest Jjhoom India and will soon be playing a brother to his son Adhyayan in a film. Shekhar Suman on a roll
When you had your own production company 7.30 Entertainment, what was the need to enter into a joint venture with UTV?
Two is always better than one. UTV is a big name and far more experienced than our company in film production and distribution. We need that kind of support right now which is why we have set up Windmills Entertainment as a joint venture. We have a deal for 2-3 years and we will see how we go and grow. It is a 50:50 partnership and we will be concentrating on film and television content.
What kind of shows will you be producing?
We are looking at producing fiction, non-fiction and reality shows. Karuna Samtani is the creative head. We are in talks with various channels including STAR Plus, Sahara One and 9X. We are also having a film Dhaan and a couple of interesting projects which I can't talk about right now.
Tell us what Dhaan is about?
Dhaan is about this detective who is investigating cases of farmers committing suicide. He meets this farmer who commits suicide in front of him which jolts him. Another incident happens which puts him on the path of self-realisation and work for humanity.
You are part of Sahara One's new show Jjhoom India? What prompted you to be a part of the contest?
I am a singer now and it gives me the right platform to showcase my talent. I had a choice between taking up Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Jjhoom India. Recently I have cut my own album and so being a singer is what interests me now. I will probably do Jhalak ... next year. Also Jjhoom ... has a good team of singers and actors. There's Suresh Wadkar who sang my first song in Utsav, the three judges Mahesh Bhatt, Shabana Azmi and Anandjibhai and my partner Sanjeevani Belande who's been around for a long time. What's more in the 15 days that I have been rehearsing and shooting for the show I have found that I have gone five ladders up!
Now that Laughter Challenge is over, will we see you in any other comedy show?
No, I want to move away from comedy. I am a serious actor but since I have done comedy, people are associating me with humour. After a point, one gets a little sick and tired of the tag. I enjoy doing intense roles far more than comedy.
So, what are the other shows you are working on?
There are a couple of big shows in the pipeline but I can't talk about them because they are in the nascent stage. However, there's another film One Fine Monday in which I play a Don who tries his best to change when his dying father extracts a promise that he mend his ways. The film directed by Manu Chhoube who's written around 500 episodes of Balaji serials is directing it. In two weeks the film will be complete and ready for release. It has an ensemble cast comprising Raj Zutshi and Gauri Karnik among others.
We read you are playing your son Adhyayan's brother in one of the forthcoming films?
Yes. I have played his father for so long, let's see how it is playing his brother (laughs). It will be an exciting and new experience.
How would you assess your son as an actor?
He is making his debut in Halle Dil opposite Kumar Mangat's daughter and the film releases next February. Adhyayan is a heavy duty star material. He did an acting course in one of the top schools Millfield from UK and completed his A levels in theatre and direction from New York Film Academy. He's getting huge offers and is on the brink of an exciting career.
