Harry Potter's stage spin-off, Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, met with some controversy when Sw aziland-born actress Noma Dumezweni, 45, was cast in the role of Hermione Granger, made famous by Emma Watson in the films. The spin-off features an adult Hermione, but many were more interested in the change of the character's race. "Ghostbusters with all women? Hermione tu with all women? Hermione t rned black? Why? Can't we just leave good casting alone?" one person wrote on Twitter, while another added, "They are only using 'black' #Hermione, so that people don't complain about racism."

Finally, when one fan wrote, "How does (Rowling) feel about black Hermione. I need to know," the author took to Twitter to silence critics once and for all by pointing out that Hermione's race had never been specified in the books. "Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione (sic)," she wrote and then retweeted pics of fan art where the character was reimagined with colour.

The change wasn't met entirely with out rage. Many fans were thrilled by the casting, the casting, writing comments like, "They can accept wizards flying on broom sticks, but can't suspend disbelief enough to accept black hermione?", "Just wanna (sic) say this whole Black #Hermione idea is awesome, who says skin colour differs a way someone acts?" and, "I am honestly so jazzed for black hermione. It's about time that my favourite franchise showed some representation."

I have nothing against "black" Hermione, but I wish other races were represented in Harry Potter besides the typical "white and black" races. We've had important black characters in the series, but how many Indians have we had? Yeah, there's Parvathi and Padma Patil, but they're not that important. They're total side characters who've never contributed anything to the series.

If Hermione can be black, she can also be brown. What do you guys feel about an Indian Hermione? 😛

Well, she didn't specify the colour, perhaps, but there's several implied moments which say that she was white or at least fair. Also, the covers.
I'm got nothing against the colour, but it's just...a big difference.
