And Maharana did not even give Maan Singh a chance to get in. His strategy was to confront them on the pass. Mughal army had a great loss despite the small no of Maharana's army. It was a great lesson yet again for Akbar that smaller army could still bring in so much destruction when Maharana is leading it.

And dear Chetak, he climbed on an elephant. What a feat! The cruel warfare tactics with those swords attached to those elephants caused the loss of a leg to our Chetak the great.

And It is only fitting that they got back Gogunda.

Kautilya has said an able ruler should have the following qualities:

  • continuous activity
  • calmness during problems
  • good character
  • respect for brave men and scholars

Maharana Pratap had all these qualities in him and more. Due to these sterling qualities, MP was able to fight against the Mughals for a long time and achieve his goal of keeping Mewar independent. If we analyse his life, we cannot find a single blemish. He always set an example of high character in front of his people so that they may learn by precept and also that they should never be unhappy enough to revolt.

The Haldighati Battle was fought for pride and not for any religious reasons. This can be seen in light of the fact that one of MP's commanders in the battle was Hakim Khan Sur, an Afghan.

Dr Ramprasad Tripathi writes of MP:

"Every valley of Rajasthan is illuminated with the achievements of Pratap. He lives in the heart of every true Indian. Those who have not visited the place where stories of Pratap's magical deeds are still told, those who have not talked with the descendants of the ancient samants whose eyes become filled with tears while talking of the deeds of their ancestors, would perhaps consider Pratap's story of bravery as a story only. Those people who have run their kingdoms in more fortunate times, they should try and imagine the depth of the emotions of the King of Mewar, for which he was ready to fight against the strongest empire of that time. Against his incomparable bravery, dedication and patriotism were the great ambition, ability, limitless resources and religious fervour of the Mughal Emperor, but all this was not enough in defeating Pratap's undefeatable brain. Every single valley was gratified by Pratap's victory or his glorious defeat."

What more can be said in honor of MP than this glorious tribute?

It is such a powerful war. What might, valour, courage, abilities and smartness displayed by Maharana and his team.

Unfortunately this also will the death anniversary of Chetak right? Sad sad.

Thanks Kaana.
Agree with the adjectives you used here.
There is a post for Chetak too. :)

Thanks for reminding us about the historic Battle of Haldighati, which is perhaps one of the most famous battles in Indian history.!!

The battle is significant because it showed the true strength of MP to the Mughals. Akbar probably thought that Mewar had a small army and could not withstand the mighty Mughal army when they attacked Mewar near the Haldighati pass. But the Rajputs surprised the Mughals with their courage and ability to sacrifice everything for their motherland. They were supported superbly by the Bhils, the tribals living in the hills around Mewar, who can be called the greatest allies of MP. Even after the war, they continued to support MP by teaching him how to survive in the jungles, hills and caves of the Aravallis. Other small allies of MP also came to his aid with the sheer determination to oust the Mughals from their homeland.

Chetak, MP's loyal and valiant horse, is inextricably associated with this war, as it led MP to safety in spite of being injured and breathing its last.

There's another martyr too who was instrumental in saving MP that fateful day. Jhaala Maan, who took the royal insignia of MP to confuse the Mughals, while Chetak carried the injured Rana to safety. The Mughals killed him, mistaking him for MP. There is a Maana Talab that stands as a tribute to this brave soul, who gave up his life to save his leader and king.

Akbar did not make any significant gains with this battle and even lost Gogunda to MP again within 3 months. As such, this discovery of the victory of MP in Gogunda is a wonderful one and a great tribute to the man who was truly a Simha among mere mortals and devoted his entire life to fighting for his ideals and keeping his homeland free from Mughal rule.

Great work by the team that discovered and cleaned this valuable inscription, great work by Rasika who translated the esoteric Sanskrit text to language we can understand, and great work by you in bringing this discovery to light. 👏

Excellent post Radhika. Thanks for the details about Jhala Man Singh.
Yesterday i was reading about him only. Jhala Man Singh had promised Maharana the night before the Haldighati battle that, if needed he will sacrifice his life for sake of Maharana's.

Look, he was right.!

Abhay, another I noted is that the inscription did not glorify Maharana, as in, beating his own trumpets, instead the victory seemed a dedication to The Lord Jagannath or as his doing, with them as His slaves. What an amazing attitude!

That's the basic difference Kaana.
You have been reading the latest Chittor Posts. And in the MOST RECENT one {New Post..ACTUAL Struggle btw Mughal-Rajput Forces | Battle of Chittor } , i am sure you must have seen the manner in which Mughal chronicles are written.. ;)

The thing is that, Abu'l Fazl has written an excellent account, but the details are TOO MUCH focused on his master.

Thanks for this summary.
Quoting Chanakya here is apt and fits in Maharana's context.
