Hi all

Posted some information related to the Battle of Haldighati. A rare stone inscription about this battle was recently found in Rajasthan. After a lot of treatment with various cleaning agents, the inscription appeared readable. The inscription was in Sanskrit language. The English translation of the same is given in the post.

And this is an appropriate time to discuss the same.

18th June happens to be the 439th anniversary of the Battle of Haldighati, which was fought between the forces of Mughal Emperor Akbar and Rajput King MahaRana Pratap on 18th June, 1576. The battle is quite famous.

Here is the LINK for that Post :

Super! Thanks for sharing. And reminding us of Haldighati on this day.

It is such a powerful war. What might, valour, courage, abilities and smartness displayed by Maharana and his team.

Unfortunately this also will the death anniversary of Chetak right? Sad sad.

Thanks for reminding us about the historic Battle of Haldighati, which is perhaps one of the most famous battles in Indian history.!!

The battle is significant because it showed the true strength of MP to the Mughals. Akbar probably thought that Mewar had a small army and could not withstand the mighty Mughal army when they attacked Mewar near the Haldighati pass. But the Rajputs surprised the Mughals with their courage and ability to sacrifice everything for their motherland. They were supported superbly by the Bhils, the tribals living in the hills around Mewar, who can be called the greatest allies of MP. Even after the war, they continued to support MP by teaching him how to survive in the jungles, hills and caves of the Aravallis. Other small allies of MP also came to his aid with the sheer determination to oust the Mughals from their homeland.

Chetak, MP's loyal and valiant horse, is inextricably associated with this war, as it led MP to safety in spite of being injured and breathing its last.

There's another martyr too who was instrumental in saving MP that fateful day. Jhaala Maan, who took the royal insignia of MP to confuse the Mughals, while Chetak carried the injured Rana to safety. The Mughals killed him, mistaking him for MP. There is a Maana Talab that stands as a tribute to this brave soul, who gave up his life to save his leader and king.

Akbar did not make any significant gains with this battle and even lost Gogunda to MP again within 3 months. As such, this discovery of the victory of MP in Gogunda is a wonderful one and a great tribute to the man who was truly a Simha among mere mortals and devoted his entire life to fighting for his ideals and keeping his homeland free from Mughal rule.

Great work by the team that discovered and cleaned this valuable inscription, great work by Rasika who translated the esoteric Sanskrit text to language we can understand, and great work by you in bringing this discovery to light. 👏

Abhay, another I noted is that the inscription did not glorify Maharana, as in, beating his own trumpets, instead the victory seemed a dedication to The Lord Jagannath or as his doing, with them as His slaves. What an amazing attitude!

This war was one of the most known wars and it was a stalemate for Akbar...
And yes..it was also the death anniversary of the beautiful and loyal horse chetak who proved it's loyalty by sacrificing it's life for its master and as it was called 'best friend'
Thank you for reminding us this day and sharing this inscription 😊
