Hello People,
I am new in this section but couldnt stop myself on asking a general opinion about whose way of loving her beloved is appreciated more.
Picking out two women from historical movies (based on Bhansali's movies ONLY) Devda's Paro and Bajirao's Mastani were way ahead of their time. They were open about their love confessions, they had the character and ability to look beyond the conventional social, racial, caste and religious differences and were not shy to take the first step.
Paravati or Paro waits for Devdas for 18 years. she is not afraid to come to his room alone at night to seek her right of love. Later, she even had the character to turn down her beloved to save her self respect. Once she is married, she looks past everything and is not afraid to go to the door step of a prostitute and demand to meet Dev. She is not afraid to go to Dev, after her marriage and ask him to come along so she could take care of her, and then, lastly, she is not afraid to run to her dying beloved when when her husband is calling out her name.
Coming to Mastani, it was love at first sight for her. This woman was not afraid to travel to a whole different culture just on the wish to meet her beloved. She stays in hostile conditions, she bears insult, until she is accepted and married, and spends her life as an outcast but refuses to leave her beloved and in the end dies in his name.
So these were two powerful women of older times presented to us by Bhansali. Whom do you all think has loved her beloved in a better way?
Is turning down your lover like Paro for your self respect right or agreeing to stay with prostitutes just for a glimpse of your lover like Masatni right?
Is asserting yourself on your lover when you know he is already married like Mastani did right or is stepping out of the way with dignity right like Paro did after knowing Dev's family plotted against her?
P.S - This is strictly a comparison of the CHARACTERS, NOT the movies or the actresses playing them.
