The Best of Things
Chapter 3
"You know what, Sanskaar?" Swara's voice rose slightly in indignation, "Laksh is living in some fantasy land. Does he really think he can reset' life - as if he had created a System Restore Point' on our wedding day?! He just wants to turn the clock back, erase everything that happened... can't he see that's not possible?"
"It's his way of trying to make amends, Swara," Sanskaar's voice, reasonable and measured, as always.
Lakshya stood against the parapet on the terrace, concealed by greenery, overhearing his life being discussed. With so much said back and forth, and multiple threads of meaning and misunderstanding in every conversation among them, it had been so confusing. He stood very quiet, trying to understand at least this way what Swara really thought, what she really wanted.
"The best way to make amends is to make the best of things, Sanskaar! See how to go forward! You can't go back!" Swara was striding about the small garden now, and Sanskaar was leaning lazily on the armrest of the swing-seat, watching her in amusement.
"He wants to get back together with me! Does he not realise he's married to Ragini? MARRIED to her! It means something when you make a vow... you undertake to partner somebody for life... you ask Agni, one of the five elements, to be your witness as you do this. It's not something you can take lightly - pick up and throw away just like that! What does he think of me?! That I can calmly settle back into being boyfriend and girlfriend with my sister's husband!?"
She was increasing her pace around the little garden, vehemence in every line. "And as if one marriage was not enough, he forced you and me to go through the rituals as well. Doesn't that mean anything?!"
"Does it?" Sanskaar interjected, looking up at her through his lashes.
Swara stopped dead. And turned slowly around.
She stammered, "Well, we... we're not going to stay married, but we did go through the rituals, right? That's why we were so upset."
"Right!"
"It has a significance - that's why I did the karva chauth vrat, na... that's why I tied the Diwali wala mouli... you know how I feel about these things! It means something."
"Hmm..."
"Anyway," Swara started to pace again, "I don't want to go back to that point. I've told him and told him. He should just accept Ragini; she loves him so much!"
"Swara!" Sanskaar's voice was quiet but somehow imperative.
She stopped to look at him. "Kya?"
He was looking with apparent absorption at his nails but then looked up at her with a direct intensity that she was now so familiar with. "Yeh galat hai. Galat kar rahi ho tum Lucky ke saath. You're being very unfair."
"Kaise, Sanskaar? What do you mean?"
Sanskaar got to his feet. "Swara, I know it was Laksh's decision to marry Ragini. But he didn't know at that point what she was like, what she was capable of. She cheated him, created a web of lies, emotionally blackmailed him so that that marriage could take place. She tried to murder the girl he was supposed to marry - she continued the deceit for weeks till we exposed her. If Laksh hates her now, and doesn't want to be with her - it's HIS decision to make."
"But... Sanskaar...!" Swara pleaded.
"Nahi, Swara. You don't want to go back to that place in the past, I accept. I understand your point of view. But Lakshya and Ragini's marriage is a completely different matter. He doesn't have to spend all his life with an obsessive psychopathic compulsive liar! Just because she's obsessively in love with him doesn't make it ok."
"But... Sanskaar, where will she go, what will happen to her? She'll go crazy!"
"That doesn't have to be Lucky's problem, Swara! If Laksh decided to give his marriage a go, if he decided on his own that somehow Ragini is his responsibility - if he accepted her gracefully, they have a chance... because Ragini does love him. But to make him accept her, to pressure him... that's wrong. He loves you but you can't use your influence that way! He can't spend his life with a rotten girl like Ragini for your sake!"
Swara was frowning, her arms on her hips - ready to give battle but the words wouldn't come. Sanskaar was right! "Hmm."
Sanskaar looked down at her worriedly, and his hands came up in pleading supplication. "Swara, please don't push for this. My brother has lost a lot in his life these past few months. He's lost you, he's pushed me away, and his entire world has come crashing down. Don't pressure him tie himself to Ragini for the rest of his life. Please!"
Swara looked up at him. "Theek hai, Sanskaar. Maybe I couldn't see beyond my sister. You're right, Laksh deserves some peace of mind at least."
A few feet away from them Lakshya stood unnaturally still, his eyes moist. The situation, so tangled for so many days, became utterly clear to him. And as he heard Sanskaar and Swara agree that he need not be trapped with Ragini for all eternity, it was as though a huge boulder were moved off his heart. He was not obliged to be with her - even if Swara was never going to come back to him, at least he was free! He looked up at the sky, prayer and gratitude flowing into his heart!
