Chapter 50
Love on fire
Arnav tried to open his eyes but the pain invading his body was also weighing down on his eyelids as was the pelting rain! And as he tried again a shaft of pain soar to his head...he tried to move his hands...he had to get up... he had to see if Khushi was safe... He had to! Dammit!
And that one thought was enough to make his body jolt up to a sitting position, though he could not keep his balance and slipped on the wet terrain. Again he braced the upper part of his body on his arm...his left arm...yes it seemed functional...he sighed...
Arnav spread his long fingers eagle like on the wet rocky soil to get a grip and raised himself up and opened his eyes slowly fighting the water drops jumping down at him from the indigo sky! He growled and blinked his eyes to adjust them to the torrential downpour.
As far as he could see through the water curtain, it was a barren rocky cliff with few bushes while dark mountains rose like monsters in the background...his irises immediately darted to and fro to catch sight of the precious figure ...his heart ached...there was no one in sight...he clenched his fist in guilt and anguish...What the! Where are you Khushi! Up in the sky, I had you in my arms, but where did I lose you...Please be save! Please be alive!
The very thought that something so drastic could happen to his Khushi made him want to throw up...turned his intestines inside out...a clawing dark intense fear seized him...
He sprang to his feet caring not a bit for the pain that suffused his body from head to toe as he stumbled forward crying out her name..."Khushi...Khushi...Answer me dammit...Khushi..."
And in the distance as he hobbled over rocks leaving a trail of blood behind him he saw a green spot at the edge of the steep cliff..."The Glider!" he exclaimed and sprinted towards it as fast as his hurting feet could carry him...
At first he could not see her in his panic and then he did... he could see her figure still attached to the glider frame where he had strapped her before the storm had sucked them in and thrown them down in the howling dark mist...
Arnav moved ahead with trepidation...his heartbeat ran several marathons as Khushi's face came into view...her face was so damn pale, her eyes closed...her body lay at an awkward angle...
Ler her be okay he prayed...Maa...please...
He slumped down besides her and pulled her listless body in his arms...as he bend over her he could hear her shallow breathing and he closed his eyes and said a silent thanks to his Maa.
Her figure hugging costume was torn in places, he inspected her face with rough shaky hands, touching the bruises on her temple and tracing down to her lower lip with a gentle finger, his heart wrenching at every blemish on her beautiful face. There seemed to be gashes on her stomach...the glider had undoubtedly dragged her on the rough pebbels...a dried mountain stream maybe...
He looked around wildly and drops of blood fell on her forehead and he gasped only to realize he was bleeding from his temple...it was his blood on her forehead...she was looking strangely beautiful...Arnav shook his head! What am I thinking! Arnav man, you are losing it...you can't afford to now...!
He shook her shoulders violently trying to get a response from her but her breathing seemed shallower...he took her palm in his and rubbed it chanting her name hoarsely..."Khushi! Khushi! Can you hear me!" He screamed at her over the din of the cold whiplashes of the storm...
Khushi puckered her eyelids at his piercingly loud commanding voice and let out a moan of protest...
Arnav cried with relief.
"You are okay Khushi. I will take you to a safe place. I will not let anything happen to you..." he assured her, kissing her all over her bruised face, like a madman...
And then he lifted her up in his arms and started moving forwards...he had no idea where he was headed but he hobbled over the wet slippery pebbels with his love in his arms...
He had no idea how far he had carried her in the hale...but he would bend from time to time to hear her breathing, her pink wet petals parting in reflex to his reassuring brush of lips that helped him put another step forward ...
Till far away in the distance he saw a a shape that looked like a shelter... He sighed deeply and quickened his pace...it was a small mountain lodge...rather dilapidated and by the look of it abandoned...
Arnav rammed his shoulder on the door and pushed it open wide, ducking his head he entered the lodge with a still unconscious Khushi in his arms. His eyes darted around. There was only one small room and with hay on all three sides, a hearth at the centre and a chair at the far end with a tattered woolen blanket flung on it. It was otherwise bare but to Arnav it was haven, a place where he could tend to Khushi's wounds and light a fire to keep them warm.
He kicked some bales of hay off the wall on to the floor and lay Khushi on the hay gently. Khushi stirred. "You will be fine Khushi. We have made it to safety..."
On the farthest end of the room near the chair he saw a lantern on a ledge. He sprang towards it, keeping his eyes on Khushi all the time. There was a matchbox next to the lantern and he lit the wick. There was a bottle on the table. Arnav opened the cork and smelled it! The strong smell of desi daru, country liquor infiltrated his nostrils, used to the best of liquor he made a face but picked up the bottle and the rug for use...
He carried the lantern to where he had laid Khushi and kneeling down besides her, he pulled off her shoes and quickly unzipped her torn costume and removed it carefully, first the jacket and then the pants. His heart shuddered at the sight of her kurti drenched in blood. Blood was oozing from the deep gashes on the right side of her creamy shoulder and trickling down to her torso.
He had no idea if there were other cuts on her body. And there was only one way to find out...He took a deep breath and ripped the material down the middle. Khushi twitched her lips in pain.
Arnav swallowed hard. "This will just take a second darling..." he promised in a husky strangled voice.
He lifted her gently and collecting her hair over the right shoulder he divested her of her the torn soaking red material covering her left upper body and then repeating the same process removed the rest of the torn kurta covering her right portion.
He laid her down gently and with one quick motion he unzipped and shrugged off his drenched costume jacket. He pulled off his vest and balled it in his hands and bend over Khushi, slowly wiping the slick blood off her waist and shoulder blades. He emptied some of the contents of the bottle on his vest and gently applied the alcohol to Khushi's wounds...the best antibiotic available at the moment...
Khushi shivered...the light from the lamp was falling on her creamy face and with her black glossy hair strewn round her she was looking ethereal...
He hesitated for a moment before gently putting his hand underneath on her back and unclasping her soggy undergarment and removing it. He forgot to breath as he wiped gently the red sheen on her creamy round mounds and averted his gaze ...shifting it downwards to inspect her anxiously for any other deep cut but thankfully there were none except for bruises on the right side of her waist. She had had a bad fall but not as bad as he had imagined and he sighed in relief. He covered her with the tattered blanket...
As he straightened himself Khushi shivered and curled up on the hay, gathering the blanket to her...She was cold... he had to light the fire!
He picked up the rickety chair from the corner and dashed it to the ground breaking it to pieces. He collected the wood and hay and lit the fire.
He scooped her up in his arms and carried her near the burning hearth. He laid her down and slid besides her and gently gathered her cold body in his arms and brushed the hair from her face.
"Khushi...?" he whispered but she did not respond.
"Dammit!" Arnav muttered. He touched her legs...the salwar was wet. He pulled down the rug on her legs and reaching inside untied the dori of her wet salwar and slid it down her legs. He had a quick look at her legs...no there were no bruise marks on them and Arnav was relieved.
A sudden exhaustion enveloped him and he winced as a shooting pain ran through his left leg. He slumped to the ground and tied the vest to his bleeding ankle. The toned muscles on his bare back rippled in the flickering fire as he slid back towards the wall and hit the hay stack. He looked at Khushi...she was no longer trembling and was breathing more normally in her sleep. Some colour had seeped back into her cheeks. Her lips were half parted and Arnav had a sudden urge to kiss them, to embrace her and keep her safe in his arms... the girl he had almost lost. But now she was with him...and was only his...
At the very thought a warm sensation infused his tired limbs and Arnav...the fire in the fireplace seemed to burn inside him...he shuddered with his desire for the girl who was the love of his life...
He closed his heavy lids and with his head lolling to one side whispered, "I love you Khushi..."
Arnav awakened from his slumber and leapt besides Khushi. "Shhh Khushi, ...there is nothing to fear...I am with you...you are safe," he whispered soothingly gently placing her head on his lap and stroking her hair...
Khushi opened her eyes wide as the sound of his voice and blinked away the tears in her hazel eyes. "Oh Arnav!" she sighed weakly, smiling in relief to find him near her...protecting her...and reached up to him, wounding her bare arms round his neck. She roved her hand over his chest and delighted in the feel of his warm smooth skin under her fingertips. She put her head on his heart hearing his heart beat in tandem with hers...
"Hey Devi Maiyya!" she shrieked suddenly and jerked away from him! Her mouth formed a big O' and she gasped loudly and clamped her palm to her mouth, her eyes wide like saucers.
Arnav was taken aback...he winced..."What happened Khushi? Are you hurting?"
But she kept staring at him with a funny look in her big luminous eyes...
Arnav was besides himself with worry and fear... "Dammit Khushi say something..."
But she was as if in a silent trance...her eyes fixed on his face...
Beads of perspiration formed on Arnav's forehead...and suddenly it struck him...
"Are you scandalised because I removed your clothes..." his voice trailed...
Khushi's eyes grew wider and she looked down at herself as if realizing all of a sudden that except for her panties she was wearing nothing under the huge moth eaten quilt enveloping her...
"Hey Devi Maiyya! You took off my clothes!" she exclaimed in shock!
Arnav raked his fingers through his wet hair and said defensively, "Look Khushi you were hurt and cold...if I hadn't removed them..."
Khushi's face was passive.
"I did not touch you...I swear..." Arnav said swallowing hard..."Nothing happened...okay?" he convinced her.
"But something did..." Khushi whispered conspiratorily...
She had spoken at last but Arnav had no idea what she was referring to...why did she have such a strange expression on her face...
"What the! What happened?" he barked at her in frustration, his mind in utter confusion...
Nothing had prepared him for her answer and he was caught totally unawares...
"Laad Governor! You said you love me!" her face lit up in a mischievous smile...
Arnav's jaw dropped... "Unbelievable!" he muttered under his breath, avoiding her gaze.
But oblivious to his embarrassment she told him with whole lot of hand and face gestures when the glider was spiralling down in the whirling dusk and her body was slowly giving away and she was feeling the dark cold hand of death squeezing her heart of its beating noise she had heard him shout out to her... "I love you Khushi..." and that is why she was alive and sitting in front of him!
He looked at her incredulously...
"I know..." she continued in an eager voice, her luminous twinkling eyes not leaving his astonished face for a second, " You said it...and I told myself I must live to hear you say it again..."
And abruptly her eyes were flooded with tears and she said in a strangled voice "And I did live to hear you say..." she stopped awkwardly...
She trembled in the intensity of her feelings...to see his lips form again those words that had willed her to live...that had snatched her away from the clutches of death...
Arnav's hesitation melted in her tears...
"Dammit!" he growled and pulled Khushi in his arms, embracing her tightly, smelling her sweet heady smell and losing himself in her craziness... his heart constricted by an overwhelming emotion...
He lifted her chin with his thumb, he tucked the loose strands of her silken hair behind her ears and slowly kissed the tears on her long curly eyelashes and smirked "You are ajeeb (strange)Khushi...How do you always manage to hear things you are not meant to hear..."
Khushi pouted at him and punched him on his bare chest as he laughed throatily...
"And through all that terrible noise...up so many thousand feet in air..." he guffawed..
"Arnav!" Khushi glowered at him and punched him again, hiding her face in the crook of his neck she trembled in his arms, closing her eyes...letting his warm gaze sooth her frazzled nerves...
Arnav kissed her eyelds, and trailed soft kisses over her flushed cheeks.
Khushi's lips parted in anticipation and Arnav moaned and sucked her full lower lip, tasting its tantalizing nectar, and then lifting his face he stared into her bemused expectant hazel eyes...
The world stopped.
"I love you Khushi..." he said simply, meaningfully, his eyes dripping passion, his husky voice holding a promise...
In the moment, hundreds of candles lit up Khushi's heart and shone through her eyes...she closed them tightly imprinting the memory of this fleeting trembling moment in her soul for all times to come...
A strange sense of relief washed over Arnav...he had finally admitted to her and himself he desired her like no one else in the world...she was everything to him...
And that is why his feelings for her frightened him just like it aroused him in an uncontrollable way...what if he lost her like he had lost maa...
Khushi opened her eyes to the many expressions flitting across his face...adoration, desire, passion, love...
And fear...
She frowned ...he had nothing to fear...she leaned forward and kissed him hard on his lips, "I love you too dammit..." she whispered smiling against his lips.
Arnav gathered her in his arms, crushing her to him and taking her lips hungrily. It was impossible for him to hold back anymore.
He nibbled every inch of her lips, then soothing them with hot wet kisses...he darted his tongue inside her welcoming mouth, exploring every corner and dueling with her tongue to take possession of all that was rightfully his...
She sighed contently, arching her back to let him discover the deep crevices of her mouth...
They came up for air and Arnav licked her earlobe sending waves of pleasure riding her, and trailed a wet path down her swan like neck, licked the gashes on the side of her neck and shoulders, soothing them before settling his head on her cleavage...where his maa's heart shaped locket nestled...
He was overwhelmed, remembering the day he had given it to her..."You wear it?" his voice was hoarse...
"Hamesha..." she whispered...
How could she forget when Ratna aunty died she had failed him...to save him, protect him from the world's ugliness...from the dark hole he had sunk into...emerging from it like a coal... cold and black...but now after so many years...he had let down his defences...he loved her...she loved him...nothing else mattered...or did it?
The woollen blanket slipped off her shoulders and fell loose around her waist and her soft breasts pressed into his face... his hot breath on her breasts...Khushi threw her head back and moaned his name
Arnav lifted his face to hers...his eyes intense...waiting...
Khushi bit her lower lip, her eyes sparkling, before she lowered them in affirmation...
He took her round soft breasts, holding them for an eternity in his palms, feeling them heaving to his touch...he squeezed them gently acknowledging their want, and flicked his tongue over their pink pertness, till Khushi thought she would die...and when his lips closed over the jutting hard nipples, his manly lips teasing and pulling and sucking, she whimpered, clawing her nails into his naked back...
"Khushi..." he groaned as blood rushed through his veins in a hot surge.
His fingers roamed over her waist freely, he touched her bruises lightly and brushed them gently with his lips, licking them...soothing them...
"I love you dammit," he said his breath heavy, his eyes moist with pain, adoration and longing... mesmerized by the spell she had cast over him.
Flashes of white and golden light enveloped him...his heart, body and soul filled with a longing and light he had never imagined existed within him...
Initially in their relationship he had set pace to possess her, to draw her completely into his dark own but he was fighting a losing battle...a battle he was enjoying losing...completely in her possession...as close to love and sunshine a man like him could get...
She pressed into him, seeking and instinctively finding herself in a position that moulded her core to his throbbing manhood...even through his wet trousers his hot arousal was obvious and she gasped in surprise and delight as a sweet moistness spread between her legs...she felt her very existence would burst into a million atoms and dance to freedom...
"Khushi?" he looked deep into her eyes and asked hesitatingly...
