Amanat was better than Anup Ghoshal

Quite a few threads discussing that it was the greatness of Gulzar's lyrics and RD's music more than Amanat's singing that made Amanat's rendition seem so good. I myself participated in some of these discussions and I reiterate what I said. Amanat was even better than Anup Ghoshal in my opinion. Anup Ghoshal's rendition had a lilting quality to it. Amanat's was just so soulful and so full of pathos, it gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes every single time I listen to it. Oh yeah, as for Samir's rendition, does not even come close to Amanat's. Other than the childish voice, it just did not have the subtle nuances that Amanat's rendition did. It was more the atmosphere (all the lil champs singing for their parents) that did the trick there. Anand Raj Anand said it very well about Amanat's performance 'Ab tak mehfil mahaul ki ghulaam thi. Isne is ibaadat se gaaya hain, isne to mahaul hi badal diya'.

As for the contention that any decent singer can do that song justice; maybe. However, there are good performances and then there are great performances and Amanat's performance was GREAT in my opinion.

Here are the three performances for comparison.

I remember a similar topic was opened comparing a song sung by Raja with the original sung by Sukhwinder and it was closed saying it was an insult to Sukhwinder.
Let's see what's the fate of this thread 😉

He was the favorite singer of Satyajit Ray. He sang all the songs for "Goopi Bagha" series of Satyajit Ray.

Basically he sings the songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam, and is an awesome singer. You should listen to his classical based Nazrul Geeti's first. He used to be very big in Bengal.

Abhi, where do you find him off???

Very interesting! Do you have links to any songs, appji?

And again, please please please let's not compare originals with cover versions. Originals and originals.

Why is it not OK to compare to originals? Note, I did not say Amanat is a better singer than Anup Ghoshal. I just said that I found him superior in this song. It is theoretically impossible for an original to be always better than anybody else who sings the song again. And Amanat added his own nuances to the song.

I know a lot about him. I can even tell you that he is originally from Raiganj. Isn't it? 😛

Actually my grandmother's younger sister and his older sister were very close childhood friends. That way he calls my grandmother "didi". He has even come to our house few times.

I like Nazrulgeeti. Didn't know Anoop sang those. Why didn't he make it big in Bollywood?

Actually he sang only two songs in Hindi, and both for RD. He didn't make big mainly due to his diction. He is much worse than Bappi da when it comes to speaking in Hindi.

I like both Anup Ghosal and Lata's version and even Amanat's version(I said Amanat's version meaning the variations he added on his own)
Anup Ghosal's version is simple yet bcuz of his voice it somehow has that melancholy which suits the situation perfectly..Amanat added those extra murkiyaan without disturbing the mood of the song and his soft, silky touch infact accentuated the beauty of the song..I absolutely loved his rendition. 👏 👏 👏
