My Imperfect Mr. Perfect - Chapter 26 (Part II)
"Ok, so I see that the princess is now happy. So can I now get my forgiveness for making you upset this afternoon?" he asked.
Khushi pretended to think for a minute before saying, "Ok forgiveness granted - but only on one condition."
********************************************************
"Condition?"
"Yep - you need to take me to the mandir tomorrow," Khushi said.
"What? Why all of a sudden?" Arnav asked.
"I just feel like it..." Khushi replied, somehow not wanting to tell him that she was going to thank Devi Maiyya for bringing him into her life.
"No Khushi, I can't let you go out," he said.
Khushi was not surprised. She'd expected this reply, which is why she had used it as a condition for his forgiveness.
"Arnavji how long am I going to be stuck in this place? It feels like forever since I last went out and enjoyed the sun! I hate being stuck in here Arnavji!"
"Khushi, it's for your safety."
"So what? Do you want me to be running and hiding my whole life?! Then let me tell you, that's not happening."
"Khushi stop exaggerating - this is just until we manage to get hold of L75 and Shyam. You've waited this long, just wait a bit more."
"No Arnavji! I can't be going on for months without going out like this! This is ridiculous - you want me to stop living my life for some stupid kameena out there?!"
"Khushi -"
"No Arnavji, it's not even like I'm asking you to let me go out and about freely. I just want to visit the temple once. Is that so wrong?"
"Those criminals are walking around out there freely, and here, even though I haven't done anything wrong, I am stuck in this place. Do you see any logic in that?"
Arnav knew she was right, but he just couldn't take the risk with Khushi.
"Khushi, I know how you are feeling but -"
"No you don't Arnavji! You have no idea how suffocated I feel sometimes in this place. When you are out or working, the feeling of not even being able to step outside for some fresh air is just... horrible! I can't talk to my family, I can't go out - sometimes I feel like I'm in jail!"
Arnav was speechless. He had no idea that Khushi was feeling this way. He had only wanted to protect her - he never intended to make her feel so suffocated. But what could he do?
He had wanted to protect her, and he couldn't find any other way other than getting her into a hiding with him. He tried to give her everything he could to make her happy, but still she felt restricted with him.
"Arnavji, the days I've spent with you in these few weeks are some of the best days in my entire life. They mean a lot to me Arnavji. I love being with you Arnavji, but not like this. Not where I feel like I've been trapped."
Looking at Arnav's face, Khushi could tell that he felt bad for her, and he was probably blaming himself too. And she didn't want that, because Khushi knew why he did what he did. And she knew it wasn't really fair to blame him when he was just trying to protect her. But how long was she going to live in fear?
Khushi took Arnav's hands into her own and placed them on her cheeks so that his hands were cradling her face.
"Arnavji, I just want to go to the mandir. If it makes you feel better, then I won't stay for long I promise. And anyways you will be with me na? Why do I have to fear, when my Arnavji is here? When my hands are in yours, I know I don't need to be scared of anyone or anything. So why are you hesitating Arnavji?"
Arnav was touched seeing her immense trust in him, time and time again. But still, is he ready to put her life at risk by taking her out?
"Khushi," he struggled. "Please try to understand - it's dangerous," he said, caressing her cheeks, desperately wanted her to understand his plight.
Khushi sighed and just got up, taking his hands off her face gently, "It's ok, you're right," she gave up.
She walked away to the bedroom and sat down on the bed to watch TV. But even though the TV was playing she wasn't watching. She was just lost in her thoughts.
And that's how Arnav found her when he stepped into the bedroom about half an hour later.
Arnav knew Khushi was sad, but he just couldn't take the risk. Not with Khushi. If anything happened to her, he didn't know how he would live with himself.
Later when Arnav made conversation with Khushi, she tried to respond normally and be her normal blabbering self, but Arnav saw right through the faade.
Even by bed-time Khushi was still the same.
When she got into bed facing away from him, Arnav took her into his arms, giving her his silent comfort. After all that was all he could give her at the moment.
And Khushi responded by turning around to face him, and embracing him, accepting his gesture.
She snuggled into his chest, and eventually fell into a peaceful sleep.
Arnav only closed his eyes when he knew that Khushi had fallen asleep.
He just hoped that Khushi would be back to her chirpy self from the next morning.
But his hopes were dashed the following morning when Khushi was still the same. He knew she wasn't angry at him, because he knew that she was well aware of his plight.
But he also knew that she was sad. She wasn't trying to be difficult so that he would give in - she was truly trying her best to act like her normal self.
And had it been someone else, then maybe they would have fallen for Khushi's act. But Arnav knew exactly how to read those hazel eyes and he wasn't to be fooled by her acting.
A while after breakfast, they were both sitting on the sofa watching TV.
Khushi was just lost in her thoughts, not really watching the TV, and after a while Arnav could take it no more.
He just stood up abruptly and said, "Get ready, we're going out."
"Huh?" Khushi asked, coming out of her stupor.
"I said get ready, we're going out."
"Really?!"
And there it was. The smile that reached her eyes.
That one smile was enough to reassure Arnav that he was doing the right thing.
"You have 10 minutes to get ready, now go."
"Arnavji I need at least an hour! I need to make jalebis for Devi Maiyya! How can I do all that in 10 min -"
"Ok you have 40 minutes,"
"Only 40 minutes?" she argued. "How is that enough to -"
"39 minutes and 53 seconds," he said.
"Hmmmph," she huffed. "Laad governor," she complained under her breath as she rushed into the kitchen.
"I heard that," he called out.
"You heard that right? Then save it in your memory too," she answered back.
"Pagal," he muttered, a smile curving his lips.
When Khushi finally made it out of the room, around forty minutes later, Arnav found himself gobsmacked.
Khushi looked breathtakingly beautiful in the magenta saree that he had gifted her yesterday.
She was wearing all his gifts - from the saree to the bangles and earrings.
She looked ethereal, and Arnav couldn't help but fall for her beauty...
Khushi who was aware of Arnav's stare, couldn't help the intense blush that spread across her cheeks.
Usually if a man looked at her for too long she would feel uncomfortable and disgusted, but with Arnav she felt... good. Really good.
When Arnav looked at her appreciatively, it made her feel like a woman - his woman. And nothing could ever compare to that feeling.
Khushi walked up to him and said, "Shall we leave?"
Khushi's words fell on deaf ears because Arnav was still in a trance.
Smiling, she waved her hands in front of Arnav's face, bringing him back to the present world, and repeated, "Shall we leave?"
"Huh? Oh. Yh. Let's leave," He looked at his watch and said, "You're a minute late," trying to sound stern, before walking away to the elevator.
Khushi just giggled lightly as she saw right through his stern faade.
They both used the unknown, private exit that was only meant for ASR.
Arnav had already told Akash to get his SUV ready so that they could go to the mandir. And so the SUV was there waiting for them when Arnav and Khushi came out.
When they got to the mandir eventually, Arnav got out first and came around to open the door for Khushi too.
She started walking towards the temple, expecting Arnav to follow her, but then turned around when she couldn't feel him behind her.
That's when she saw him leaning against the car, with arms folded, making no move to follow her.
Khushi raise her eyebrows, and inclined her head towards the temple, as if saying, What? Come in.'
To which Arnav just shook his head in reply, as if saying, No you go, I'll wait here.'
But Khushi wasn't ready to take no' for an answer so she went up to Arnav, and asked, "Why aren't you coming in?"
"I don't believe in God, Khushi."
"Don't disrespect Devi Maiyya like that! And that too in front of her own temple!"
"How can I respect something that I don't even believe in?" he said, rolling his eyes at the temple.
"Arnavji don't do that! You shouldn't disrespect Devi Maiyya like that! Whatever you have today - all this money, property, everything - you got it because of her."
"No Khushi - I got all this from MY hard work. Arnav Singh Raizada writes his own destiny - no God writes it for him. If God existed then I would never have lost my Maa, Khushi. And moreover, if God existed my Maa would never have been punished in the worst way possible, for no fault of hers." he said harshly.
Khushi was shocked to see the amount of pain that she saw in his eyes when he said that last sentence. And what did he mean by Ratna Maa being punished in the worst way possible? She knew that she was no longer in this world, but she didn't know that something bad had happened to her...
Khushi wanted to ask so many questions but she knew that this wasn't the right place, nor the right time.
"Arnavji, I don't know what has made you so bitter about God, but I know that you've gone through a lot in life. And so I'm not going to force you to believe in God for me. But can you please at least come inside the temple? Please? For me?" she requested.
As she saw Arnav hesitate, "Arnavji, this is the first time I'm going out somewhere with you. And I just want you to be with me... If it makes you feel any better, just think that you're doing your job, watching out for any danger... Please?" she pleaded.
She cupped his face, gazing into his eyes, "For me?" she asked.
"Okay," he finally gave in. "But only for you," he clarified, not wanting her to get the wrong idea.
"Yaaayy!!!" she squealed in joy, before wrapping her arm around one of his with authority, and walking up the stairs to the temple, with him tagging along beside her.
Arnav just smiled seeing her excitement about him coming to the mandir with her. If this is the reaction he was going to get every time he accompanied her to the mandir, then he wouldn't mind coming every day just to make her happy.
When they went up to the mandir, Khushi went to the priest and gave him the tray full of hand-made jalebis that she had brought as an offering for the Goddess.
The second her hands were free, Khushi joined her hands in front of Devi Maiyya, thanking her for bringing Arnav into her life. She prayed for her family, her Buaji, her Jiji and last but not least, her Arnavji.
She prayed that Devi Maiyya give him happiness in his life from now on - to give him the love and care that he deserved. She didn't know what had happened in his life before, but she wished that everything that happens from now on, will only give him happiness.
Meanwhile Arnav was standing next to Khushi, admiring her face as she talked to her Devi Maiyya silently.
When the priest finally came to them with the prashaad, he blessed them both, "Devi Maiyya aap dono ki jodi hamesha banaaye rakhe, (May Devi Maiyya keep your couple together forever)"
Both Arnav and Khushi turned to look at each other, their eyes twinkling in silent joy at the words.
"Arre panditji! Unki shaadi nahi hui hai or nahi voh ek dusre se pyaar karthe hain, (Oh panditji (Priest)! They're not married and neither are they in love,)" interrupted a female voice.
Both Arnav and Khushi turned to Sheetal standing behind them with a sweet smile on her face.
"Oh Sheetal Di, how are you?!" asked an excited Khushi.
Sheetal stepped forward, forcing Arnav and Khushi to step apart to make space for her in the middle. "I'm fine Khushi, how are you? And how are you Arnav? I haven't seen you both in ages!" she said, particularly eyeing Arnav as she said the last sentence.
"Yh we're doing ok, Sheetal Di. Why don't you get the prashaad?" said Khushi.
"Oh haan!" Sheetal extended her palms towards the priest, bowing her head slightly as she took the prashaad.
The priest was about to move on to the next set of people before he paused slightly and turned back to Sheetal. He said, "Beta, jodis are not made by you or me. They are made up there, by Devi Maiyya and she is the one who decides who is whose life partner." The priest smiled before continuing, "And Devi Maiyya has already decided that these two are meant to be together. If that is her decision, then who are we to interfere in God's choice?"
Saying that the priest moved on to the other people, while Sheetal's smile was wiped off her face momentarily. She was quick to hide her expressions and paste a smile back on her face - but not quick enough as Khushi had seen that momentary change already. Arnav however, was completely clueless.
As the three of them turned to leave, Sheetal said, "Why don't you both come to my house for a while? It's been so long after all..."
Khushi turned to Arnav, waiting for his answer.
Arnav was about to refuse, but then he remembered how Khushi said that she was feeling suffocated being stuck in one place for days. So he thought maybe going to Sheetal's house for a little while would make her feel a little better. And plus that meant she had different company too for a change...
"Ok fine, but only an hour or two," he said with finality.
This time, it was Khushi who gave a tight smile. Even though she had liked Sheetal at the beginning, she was now starting to get a different vibe from her.
Khushi didn't like the way Sheetal looked at Arnav, and being a girl she was almost certain of Sheetal's intentions towards Arnav.
Normally she wouldn't mind about these things, but this is Arnav we are talking about. HER man. And in no way was she ready to share him with any other girl. Never.
She could see Sheetal trying to brush her arms against Arnav's arms casually' while they walked towards the stairs. Sheetal was so focused on sneaking glances at Arnav that she didn't notice Khushi's sharp gaze on her. And Arnav was completely oblivious to all this - after all he had no idea of Sheetal's feelings towards him.
Khushi was just wishing that she could do something to take Sheetal away from Arnav, and she was so busy in her complaint to Devi Maiyaa that she didn't see the dip on the ground in front of her.
So when Khushi took another step forward, she lost her footing and ended up twisting her ankle. "Ow!" she exclaimed in pain, as she lost her balance.
Khushi shut her eyes tight waiting for the ground to hit her, but it never came.
Instead she felt a pair of arms wrapping themselves around her back and waist, breaking her fall just in time.
She opened her eyes to see Arnav's molten caramel eyes looking back into her own with concern.
"Tum teek ho? (Are you ok?)" he asked, worried for her.
Khushi lifted one of her hands to clutch his collar, before smiling, "Jab aap hamaare paas hain, toh hum teek kaise nahi ho sakthe? (When you're next to me, then how can I not be ok?)"
Arnav just smiled in return, looking at Khushi tenderly, taking in her innocence, her features, everything. No matter how long he gazed at her, he could never get enough of her.
He hugged Khushi, feeling overwhelmed by his feelings for her, and Khushi went willingly, just enjoying the moment of being with him.
The sensation of being in his arms had made Khushi completely forget about Sheetal's presence and her previous anger.
But unknown to Khushi, Devi Maiyya had silently granted Khushi's wish of separating Sheetal and Arnav, and bringing Arnav to her side. After all, Khushi and Arnav were meant to be - not Sheetal and Arnav...
Both Arnav and Khushi were lost in the depth of each other's eyes, completely forgetting about the presence of Sheetal, who was now burning in jealousy.
Sheetal was standing there all alone, while Arnav and Khushi were lost in their own world, wrapped around each other.
She felt such rage seeing Arnav treating Khushi with so much care. Forget care - Arnav hadn't even looked at her twice in the past. And she's known him much longer than Khushi has known him. Sheetal just felt like breaking something seeing them both so close.
Sheetal waited a few seconds for them to withdraw but then she could take it no longer.
She coughed loudly, breaking their trance, causing them to pull away from each other, even though Arnav still had one arm wrapped around Khushi's waist.
"Let's go," Arnav said, acting as though he hadn't just hugged Khushi in front of hundreds of people.
Sheetal was gritting her teeth seeing his one arm still around Khushi's waist, but what could she do? She just waited for them to move forward so that she could walk with them.
Khushi stepped forward but then winced in pain as her twisted ankle was hurting her.
But then she tried to take the next step forward, reigning in the pain, but before she could, she was lifted up into Arnav's arms.
"Arnavji! Let me down!" she exclaimed, conscious of all the people who were now looking at them. "Everyone is watching Arnavji! Please put me down!" She struggled in his arms, hoping he would put her down.
"No," he said sternly, tightening his arms around her while walking down the stairs carefully. "You're hurt."
"But everyone is watching Arnavji!" she said.
"So what?" he said. "I'm carrying MY girl in my arms. There's nothing to be ashamed of," he said, uncaring.
Khushi just hid her face in the crook of his neck, too embarrassed to face the people who were now staring at them, seeing a man carry a girl in his arms so openly in public.
As they got to his car, he turned to Sheetal with Khushi still in his arms. "How did you get here? By car?"
"Yh my car is over there," Sheetal replied.
"Okay then, you can come in your car. Me and Khushi will come to your house in our car," Arnav said.
Sheetal smiled, "Of course," and then walked towards her car.
The moment her face was turned away from Arnav, she gritted her teeth, seeing another chance of being with Arnav gone.
Only when Arnav spoke to Sheetal, did Khushi remember her presence with them.
And with that came back the worry of Sheetal's attraction to Arnav...
She needed to speak to Arnav about this soon, she decided.
But little did she know that right now, she had something much bigger to be worried about.
Because all this time, unknown to them, someone had been watching their every move.
From the time they entered the mandir, to the moment they sat back in the car - their every movement was being noticed...
A big storm was coming their way, and they had no idea...
