Chapter 17
As Asad pulled outside her house, he held her hand and without waiting said what was in his mind "Zoya... I... I am sorry..." He saw her open her mouth but immediately placed his finger to her lips to stop her from saying anything. "Let me finish... Please... I really don't know what happened to me... Back at my place... I don't know what came over me, don't know how I could get so carried away... so blinded by... By my need... My love... For you... Am sorry, I didn't know that this could happen, that I could react like this to us being like that, to the little that happened... Am sorry" he finished in a whisper.
Zoya held his hand that was still against her lips and pulling it down she shook her head. "Please don't say that... Please don't apologize. You're making it all sound like a mistake, a sin... No... It wasn't... It never will be... We love each other Asad, have loved each other for a long time, even with so much that has happened in between... So much... but our love didn't let us move on, didn't let us forget each other, didn't let us believe otherwise. Please ...please don't say sorry". Asad cupped the side of her face, gently stroking her cheek. He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. Moving back he looked into her eyes and whispered an I love you for which he saw her smile " I love you too ". Getting out the car they both walked towards her building where before saying their final goodbye Asad gave her a quick hug and then let her go.
Zoya entered her house and saw her Ammi watching TV. "Assalam O Alaikum Ammi. What are you watching?" "Wa Alaikum Assalaam beta. Just surfing. Nothing specific. How was your dinner with Asad?" Zoya felt a little nervous answering that question but sounding as normal as she could she looked at her Ammi and said "It was nice. I enjoyed it". As Zoya was about to walk to her room she heard her Ammi "Did you tell him today?" Hearing those words Zoya froze in her tacks. Not being able to look her Ammi in the eye Zoya stood as still as she could. On receiving no response from her, Benazeer asked again "Zoya, why are you prolonging it. This has to be done...and the sooner... The better." "Ammi... I... I want to... But... But I just got him back...and I don't want to lose him again Ammi" "You won't, But keeping this information from him may result in just that. He may feel cheated..." Zoya turned around, here eyes turning red and brimming with unshed tears. Without a seconds delay she ran into her mother's open arms.
As Benazeer stroked her hair, trying to take away the pain she knew her daughter was going through, she felt her body shake to her silent sobs. Giving her a tight hug Benazeer pulled away cupping the side of her face. "I know the pain Zoya, but its for your betterment beta, the more you delay it the more he can feel cheated". Shaking her head in the negative, Zoya moved away from her Ammi and taking a couple steps away from her she said "I can lose him forever again Ammi, please... just a few more days with him... Then I promise I will tell him..." "Zoya, I hope you understand that what you are keeping from him may not be a big deal for him, but for his parents, this could be all that would make or break everything for you. Or maybe, they may be ready to overlook it too, but he may feel cheated for not being told earlier."
"I know Ammi, and that's the reason I don't want to tell him so soon". Zoya turned around facing her Ammi again " What if I... I lose him again? " Zoya said with fear evident in her voice. "But it isn't your fault, none of it was..." "That's what we know Ammi, the world will still point a finger at you, and the fact that he was my father doesn't change... What if I am rejected for being who I am?" Zoya finished in just above a whisper. When she didn't hear her Ammi say anything she looked up to see a shocked expression on her face. Looking scared for life, Benazeer walked up to her and cupping her face she pulled her closer kissing her forehead "Nothing wrong will happen now Zoya, am sure Allah has tested you enough and now, all will be OK." Smiling Zoya hugged her Ammi "Ameen. I don't want anything to go wrong now. I will tell him soon Ammi, soon".
Just as Zoya finished saying that they heard shuffling of footsteps behind them. They turned around to see what it was and were left shocked to find Asad standing at their door. With an awkward silence between them, Asad and Zoya stood there looking at each other. Benazeer could see the accusations Asad had in his eyes and how Zoya's eyes fell to the floor. Benazeer looked from one to the other understanding the critical situation that had suddenly cropped up in the paradise that these two had just created for themselves. Trying to defuse the situation she walked up to Asad "Assalam O Alaikum beta. Mein Zoya ki Ammi, please come inside". Asad looked at Benazeer and smiling nervously he said " Wa Alaikum Assalaam... ji... No , its OK". He looked at Zoya with the same accusations but looked back at Benazeer and with his eyes softening he said "I didn't mean to eves drop... Am sorry to have been an intrusion like this" Zoya's eyes shot up to meet his and she saw the extent of damage that had been done. With an uncertain smile on her lips she took a step towards him when she saw his body stiffen and his jaw clenched. She looked at him with hurt in her eyes. Asad looked away for a second and then back at her. With a voice void of any emotions he said "You left your phone in my car, I came just to return it". Quickly walking towards him, she took the phone and as she was about to talk to him, he turned on his heels and walked back out.
Zoya who was already feeling hurt due to the way he had looked at her couldn't stop the pearcing pain that threatened to overtake her whole body. She looked at her Ammi helplessly and then as if her life were slipping away from her hands, Zoya dumped her phone on the nearest table and ran after him. She saw the elevator door close and cursed it out of frustration. Running as fast as she could she descended the four stories running like a maniac. As she reached the ground floor, she saw the main door to the building swinging, understanding that Asad had just exit, she ran out looking for him. She saw his car right where he had dropped her and Asad walking towards it. Sighing in relief she called out his name but he didn't turn around. She knew he had heard her as she saw his steps faulter. Not knowing what to do she screamed his name with all her might and then ran towards him.
As Asad heard her loud scream, he stopped and turned around only to be hit by her soft body as she came crashing into his chest. He felt her wrap her arms around his torso holding him tight to herself and his arms automatically encircled her waist. He heard her gasping for air due to her run down the stairs and could feel her body shaking due to her uncontrolled sobs. He stroked her hair trying to calm her down but his heart pained due to the fact that there was something he was never told. As much as he tried to pull away from her, she kept pulling him that much closer. She was talking between her sobs and all Asad understood were her relentless please for him to stay, to listen to her once, to let her explain and her endless confession of her love for him. But right at this moment, no matter how much he loved her, all that rang in his mind was that there was something very important that she had been hiding from him. Something that was so big that she thought it could easily overshadow the love they had.
As he tried to pull away from her so he could talk to her and try and understand what went so horribly wrong, Zoya wouldn't let him. Out of frustration, Asad pushed her away from himself with a jerk making her quite in an instant. Not able to control his anger and the resulting frustration Asad spoke to her in a tone he never thought he would use with anyone. "I need to think... We need to talk... How could you Zoya... Hiding things from me... Me!" "Asad, please li.." By she was cut off by his hand that he raised, indicating her to stop talking. "Not now Zoya, please... I really need to go, need to think about what I just came across... I... I feel cheated... As if all of this was a lie... I don't know what you are hiding from me, I am not hurt or angry cause of that. What has upset me the most is the fact that there is something you have been hiding from me and you think I would be so affected by it that it could ruin what we have... I'd thought that we have come a long way in our relationship, but seems its not the same with you. This was the last thing I expected Zoya..." Saying so he turned around and got into his car. Without sparing her another glance, Asad left her standing there, her eyes still shedding the teras and her heart sinking with the feeling of losing him again.
Zoya stood there, watching his car disappear into the traffic not able to accept that he could have just left like that, without looking at her even once. As much as she wanted to pacify her heart that all would be OK, her mind didn't agree. With her vision still blurring, she took small steps back, her eyes still on the road hoping for his car to appear again but nothing like that happened. As she stepped in her house again she fell in the arms of her Ammi, crying for her loss. "All will be OK Zoya, don't worry... Give him time... Give him time". Disagreeing with her Ammi Zoya said in just a whisper " If all will be OK Ammi, then why do I have a bad feeling about it, why do I feel this emptiness within ". After staying like that for a long time, Zoya wiped the tears that had almost dried and got up walking to her room without looking at her Ammi. Benazeer saw her daughter lifelessly walk away, she wiped her own tears and then looked up "If anything, ANYTHING, goes wrong for my daughter now, you will have a mother to answer to. What has she ever done to be punished again and again. Never has she thought of herself before others, always kept me and her responsibilities as her priority... And now... That life is giving her a chance, you are trying to take it away. Don't do it, please don't do it... Allah if anything goes wrong I don't know what I would do. Please! please don't let her lose him again. Please Allah please. He's all she has now, her only reason to live" Benazeer cried for her daughter's happiness, cried, so Allah would have mercy on her.
Curled up in her bed Zoya let her tears stream down, letting them dampen her face as well as her pillow. She closed her eyes trying to fall asleep but knew that wouldn't happen tonight. She knew that this night would be an addition to the numerous she had spent earlier, hiding from her Ammi, hiding from the rest of the world the pain she had been carrying within, the pain that the loss of her only love had causd. And tonight, she felt the same helplessness, the same pain that she had learnt to live with for three years but now was as new as it could be. Not knowing where the hours went, Zoya saw the darkness in her room be replaced by the first rays of the sun. Doing the only thing that had given her peace in her tough times, she bowed down in front of her creator, once again asking for mercy, for his forgiveness for whatever sin she had committed intentionally or unintentionally. Putting her mat away, she got dressed with just one aim in mind and that was to put her part in front of Asad, to tell him, to explain to him everything and let him decide their future.
Asad had been waiting for the sun to come up too, so he could go and confront her as to what it was that she had been hiding from him, even after coming so far in their relationship. After finding her, this was the first night he had spent sleepless, trying to understand where he lacked or where their relationship lacked that she still had secrets from him. All that he had built with her seemed to have been a farce to him. He just couldn't think straight for even a second and decided to talk to her first thing in the morning. He didn't want to sit in his room thinking about it all without knowing what it was that he was actually upset about. To pacify his heart he kept telling himself that all this was just a misunderstanding and nothing as big as he thought it was. Getting ready, he walked down the stairs and as he was about to step out the house he heard his Ammi "Asad, you're leaving so early? Wait, have breakfast and go beta" "Don't have time Ammi, something very important and urgent that I need to look into". Without even turning around to look at his Ammi, Asad left his house. As soon as he left Dilshaad called Rashid out the room. "I know something is wrong Rashid, he didn't even look at me. Allah! Please let everything be OK" "You are worrying unnecessary Dilshaad, all will be OK. He must have some work". "No Rashid, if it was only work, he wouldn't walk away the way he did. I know my son, there's definitely something big he's hiding from us. He... He acted just like he had when he didn't find Zoya in Bhopal".
Placing her hand on her chest, she sat on the chair she was standing next to. Rashid rushed to her side placing his hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry Dilshaad, if it's anything between them they will definitely sort it out. Every relationship builds stronger with evey obstacle it clears... theirs will too". Nodding Dilshaad looked up at a smiling Rashid understanding that what he said was true. Unaware, both Asad and Zoya had left their respective homes to go meet the other at theirs.
P.S. Look forward to your feedback and comments my lovelies. Hope you all liked it.
