Shanti might have taunted N+R, but also you need to remember a few things about Riya's dadi-bua and Riyas relationship with and observation of her... if we didn't know that the woman had a heart of gold, we would have assumed that she was a horrible old bag with the way she kept "taunting" Bunty. And even the way she picks on her DIL at Anupam's house. Given that we know that about her and that Riya is used to that behaviour from her and yet she knows her dadi-bua is just a sweetheart really...then we can see that shes kind of translated that to shanti ALSO. NO ONE has informed Riya of shanti's true nature and Riya isn't someone who naturally thinks bad of people, so why would she think that Shanti is purposefully being evil to K,N or P? From her perspective maybe its just teasing, just like her own grant-aunt teases. Shes even said on numerous occasions to Preeti or Nimmi that Shanti is just like her dadi and shes told Anupam that shanti is just like dadi. She doesn't know what the real shanti is- she probably just thinks that because Shanti's elder and everyone seems to obviously be giving her the right to treat them that way. In her maternal household she has seen her aunt speak back to her grand-aunt- she's seen her aunt stand up for herself. But here no one says one word against Shanti- so she must be thinking that its not being taken that seriously, maybe shanti doesnt mean the things she says in a nasty way. Shes even said to N+P that shanti is joking or teasing. Im sure if she knew the womans real colours she would speak up. JUST like she spoke up with shivam and told him his mum had made a scene. And of course as Leelalore said- and I agree- Shanti has 1) told riya that Khusiya is very strict and doesn't like mistakes so be very cautious and 2) Khusiya has clearly told riya that even though shanti speaks to her like that, its only because she knows best and is eldest and that Riya should never talk back to her elders. So Riya hasn't got a chance in hell of seeing the reality of whats happening. To top it off Shivam wont tell her the truth. Id assume my husband (of ALL people) would open up to me and tell me that something is badly wrong before I make an ass out of myself. So why on earth would she think anything's wrong? No one says anything bad about shanti ever- only person is Nimmi and even then its not obvious and so riya thinks she just teasing her dadi. WE the viewers can see how frustrating it is that Riya isn't able to see the patterns- but likewise, Khusiya cannot seem to see any patterns in Shanti's behaviour either and shes been around much MUCH longer than Riya has.

You're right, Khusiya has been groomed to behave docile and to pander to her MIL and husband to such an extent that it makes her look weak. In one way she is actually quite a strong person to withstand all that kind of abuse without throwing herself off a damn building. But on the other hand she is JUST as weak. Whichever way you look at it, "illiterate" or not, "docile" or not...these characteristics do not equate to being unable to protect your children. Not necessarily. There ARE women who are physically/mentally abused by not just their husbands but in-laws too and yes they do fall prey to completely losing any semblance of a life, unable to look after or protect their children. But as we've seen a few times now, Khusiya is not unable to speak up for her children. She is not THAT terrified of Raghav or MIL or Riya that she hasn't had an outburst with any one of these people. (Riya- stair slip incident, shanti- stair slip incident when she outright told shanti that she wouldn't back down, Raghav- the incident where shanti accused shivam of stealing her earring or whatever when she had infact dropped it in the lentils- Khusiya had properly put Raghav in his place for not supporting his son) What Im saying is a woman who is so "scared" of speaking up wouldn't have been able to do these things. Ive been in a mentally abusive relationship that would have turned physical had I not chucked a chair at the pr*ck and swiftly left him- and from my personal experience when you are genuinely scared you don't even have the guts to look people in the eye, never mind have outbursts. But come on- she IS able to speak up for herself when it seems to suit her. She is not as innocent and "simple" as she appears. She is innocent and nave to a point- but that doesn't equate to her being unable to stand up for her children etc. She should be able to speak up and growl in those circumstances as she has proven she can indeed do that. But more consistently.

Agree, Shivam is completely gone off on a different tangent with this whole need to keep riya in the dark. Has anyone heard this quote by Martin Luther King? "Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity" And this phrase pertains to everyone in the Srivastav family at some point or all points quite frankly. People are using the excuse of ignorance or believing and accepting lies as truth then acting and/or reacting on this wrong information. People are bypassing good sense out of ignorance and using that as an acceptable excuse for the shenanigans. There are people who KNOW better but refuse to act on it. I agree with you- Shivam is siding a bit with his dadi- as hes said a few times "she did sanction the marriage" but seriously, she did ONE thing to support him and it wasn't even because she likes him or Riya or because she gave a damn about what would happen to him- she did it for the sole purpose of appeasing her own son. Shivam knowing what his dadi is like and knowing that she loathes K, P, N and himself, he couldn't see this? So because she agreed to the wedding hes keeping riya in the dark- STUPID. ON PURPOSE.

Agree- don't want Nimmi to stop speaking up- but wish she'd use her brains to speak up at right time and place. She jumps the gun before she speaks, instead of clarifying the situation for herself first. Its really fantastic when she flips out at shanti or sarla- yeah its fab. But then she flips out at riya for silly things that she hasn't bothered to clarify first. If that's the cost of her speaking up, then its not great. Because people are getting hurt that don't need to get hurt. But of course that's a big huge debate in this forum as many people believe Riya deserves all the shouting that shes been getting!

Agree- Preeti needs to get the hell away from Shanti- that's the ONLY way she'll be able to speak unhindered. Shes fine at work and away from the old hag, isn't she. But no one in the family knows why shes like that- and I can understand that they wont because they have to have been told by someone that stress can manifest itself as speech problems. But yes- the way things are going, she will be just as docile as Khusiya. Only difference is she might complain to Nimmi about the injustice of it all but she wont have the strength to change it. Maybe her only hope is marrying well and just getting away from everyone.
