Indian actors who have made it big on international TV



Her face is splashed in billboards and buses across the US - from Los Angeles to New York, and she is all over Times Square hoardings. Actress Priyanka Chopra has been making waves throughout India and the US with her international TV premier on ABC's Quantico. In the series, Chopra plays the protagonist, Alex Parrish, who is suspected of committing a terror attack.

PeeCee is not the first Indian actor to have made the journey beyond Bollywood's shores. Here, we take a look at the other Indian actors who have made their name on international TV:

Irrfan Khan: The actor has become quite a well known face internationally, having worked in a number of projects from A Mighty Heart' and Darjeeling Express' to Slumdog Millionaire' and Life of Pi'. He was also part of the American TV series on HBO, In Treatment', which ran from January 2008, till October 2010. In the series, he played the role of Sunil, a widower from Kolkata, who moves in with his son's family in Brooklyn. Irrfan will be next seen in a Japanese mini-series, based on the World War II, where he will portray the role of an Indian judge.

Anupam Kher: He has worked in many international projects and crossover films, such as Silver Linings Playbook', Bend it Like Beckham' and Mistress of Spices'. Anupam Kher, the veteran actor, is now a part of digital streaming service, Netflix's series, Sense8, an action thriller, which revolves around eight strangers from eight parts of the world, and a common thread that connects them all.

Nimrat Kaur: She gained international recognition through her role of a house wife in the 2013 Indian epistolary film, Lunchbox'. In 2015, actress Nimrat Kaur debuted in international television with her role in the hit TV series Homeland'. Kaur plays Tasneem Qureshi, an ISI agent, in the political thriller, produced by Fox 21 Television Studios. Her portrayal of a villain in the series has earned her rave reviews in American media.

Anil Kapoor: He made his international debut with the Oscar winning 2008 British drama, Slumdog Millionaire', and went on to act in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol'. In 2010, Anil Kapoor also starred in the final season of the American series 24, where he played the role of Omar Hassan, the president of a fictitious nation, Islamic Republic of Kimistan. In 2011, Kapoor bought the official rights for the Indian remake of the series, where he played the lead role and also produced the series.

Saeed Jaffrey: The octogenarian has played a vast canvas of roles in his life, from appearing in British dramas to acting in innumerable Indian films. Saeed Jaffrey has acted in a number of prominent British television series such as Gangsters' (BBC, 1975-76), The Jewel in the Crown' (ITV, 1984), The Far Pavilions' (Channel 4, 1984), Tandoori Nights' (Channel 4, 1985) and Little Napoleons' (Channel 4, 1994). He also became the first Asian actor to receive an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contribution to drama.

Shabana Azmi: The actor-social activist, who is known for her strong woman-oriented roles, will be next seen in BBC One's TV series, Capital', which is being directed by Euros Lyn. She is currently in London, shooting for the series, from where she had announced the news on Twitter.

Kabir Bedi: The thespian is one of the first Indian actors to gain wide recognition internationally. Kabir Bedi is best known for his portrayal of the pirate Sandokan' in the Italian six part TV mini series of the same name, which broke viewership records across Europe. He has starred in the much watched American series, Bold and the Beautiful', and has also been a part of the series, Dynasty', Murder, She Wrote', Magnum', P.I.', Hunter', Knight Rider' and Highlander: The Series', among others.

i loved nimrat & irfan the most as i have seen their work. nimrat was simply brilliant in homeland & irfaan was damn awsum in life of pie even though he had less screen space
