KAREENA GOES BEHIND THE SCENES

By Sanyukta Iyer, Mumbai Mirror | Sep 16, 2015, 12.20 AM IST

Kareena goes behind the scenes
The actress has joined hands with her school friend to produce a documentary on women's empowerment.

Kareena Kapoor is producing and presenting a documentary written and directed by her school friend, Aditi Kapoor. Aditi was the technical director on the fourth instalment of the Ice Age franchise, Ice Age: Continental Drift, and the 2013 Hollywood animation film, Epic.

The yet-to-betitled documentary marks her directorial debut in India and propagates women empowerment through the real life story of a girl who struggles to get herself educated and become independent. Shooting begins at the end of October.

"Kareena and Aditi studied together at Welham Girls' School in Dehradun. When Aditi began discussing her script, Kareena jumped on board towards the end of August. She's a hands-on producer, has already had one narration and suggested some additions to the script. These include recent changes in teaching methods in government schools, use of technology to improve education and interactions with organisations working towards making people and celebrities more aware of problems faced by women. Bebo has definitely done her homework on this one," says a source close to the actress, adding that she could also be the narrator and play a role, like Leonardo DiCaprio did in the environmental docu-feature, The 11th Hour, which he co-scripted, produced and narrated.

Kareena joined the Girl Rising campaign alongside Priyanka Chopra, Freida Pinto, Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, Madhuri Dixit, Nandita Das and Sushmita Sen, a series aimed at educating the beti and giving her wings. It took one phone call from Priyanka to get Kareena's nod. And the begum will take the cause further with this documentary.

Bollywood can start close to home by making more movies that empower women instead of the current flowerpot/item girl roles. Maybe it can help change the mindset of some people.

Kareena Kapoor is a top Bollywood actor noted for playing a variety of characters across a range of film genres. She has received six Filmfare Awards and has firmly established herself as one of the highest-paid female actors of the Indian Film Industry. She has made valuable contributions to the industry as well as strongly involved in supporting social causes to bring a difference to the society.

Ms. Kapoor has been supporting UNICEF India in the area of quality education for over a year now. Some of her key public service statements on this issue are helping us to spread extensively the message of child friendly schooling and the need to include secondary education under the ambit of Right to Education (RTE), to communities across India.

Ms. Kapoor will be working closely with UNICEF in the coming years and will lend support to various programs advocating the cause of quality education and free secondary education for children with high-level government officials, across the country. She will also be a part of our fundraising and advocacy events for this cause

Ms. Kapoor has visited the hinterlands of Rajasthan and Maharashtra to see how some child friendly schools have come up in the interiors of these Indian states. Contrary to the usual education system employed in most schools, these schools endeavour to create happy spaces for children where they can freely intermingle with teachers, are safe and secure, and where interactive and creative tools are used to ensure happy learning.

Ms. Kapoor is specifically advocating for secondary education for teenaged girls above 14 years of age, as that would give them the opportunity to continue learning in a protected space, equipping themselves with life skills and empowering themselves with knowledge, while also keeping away the unwanted pressures of early marriage and pregnancy.

Ms. Kapoor is supporting our efforts on improving the quality of education given at schools and encouraging dialogue on the various facets of the RTE. With her support and other stakeholders' effort this child centered approach is now being practiced in 250,000 primary schools across the nation, resulting in major improvement in both academic and co-curricular outcomes.
