All that glittered…

A power failure, a wardrobe malfunction and some more drama transpired at the recently held Gold Awards

Posted On Monday, September 24, 2007

Sandipan Dalal from Mauritius

The crowds that thronged the venue proved that people in Mauritius are undoubtedly avid viewers of desi soaps. The locals arrived in crammed cars and buses to see their favourite small screen stars receive their awards. The first global television award function had a few initial slip-ups like a power failure that happened during the show and Narayani Shastri's wardrobe malfunction on stage.

Unlike most television awards, the winners said something different as part of their thanksgiving speech: "Thank you Pooja, Vikas and Anuj, the organisers of the first edition of Gold Awards." The norm so far has been, "Thank you Balaji. Thank you Ekta," as rightly pointed out by Deven Bhojani.

Vikas Kalantri, Pooja Ghai and Anuj Saxena
For starters, Balaji Telefilms had refused to participate in the awards gala and did not file any nominations for the various categories. Hosts Mandira Bedi and Aman Verma took the opportunity to take digs at Ekta Kapoor's decision to stay away from the awards.

About the performances of the evening, Narayani Shashtri just about survived an episode of wardrobe malfunctioning during her opening act. The top part of her outfit (designed by Vikram Phadnis) almost gave away. However, the actress who was completely taken aback, held on to her veil and as a result missed a few dance steps before rushing backstage.

During Karishma Tanna's performance, an unexpected power failure made her completely freeze on stage. Neha Bamb is, however, unarguably the worst dancer in the television world. Standing tall, Chetan Hansraj and Gaurav Chopra's act was a tribute to Amitabh Bachchan, and the duo put up a satisfactory show. Urvashi Dholakia and Barkha Bisht's performance was also commendable.

Talking of television couples, Neena Gupta paraded with her Delhi-based industrialist husband Vivek. Reportedly, Neena has relocated herself in Delhi and makes frequent trips to Mumbai to film her shows. She also threw a fit about the seating arrangement at the auditorium, and even threatened to walk out of the ceremony.
