That could be simply due to an error of judgement at that time. It can take years to realise the mistake and more years to act on it. On the other hand, people change over a period of time. Their likes dislikes and maturity level also changes and what once appeared attractive may not appear so after a decade or two. It does not mean that the two did not love each other when they got together first. Just that along their journey people can grow apart. How they face such a situation will differ depending on circumstances or individual characteristics. The maturity and spirituality level as someone mentioned earlier would also be at play.
