Animals are terribly loyal - now and in those times

Nowadays people treat animals so badly till they are young and not ill they keep them in house and leave them on road when they get old and ill. Even the security animals are put to sleep after active service I read. And in those times animals were very loyal but owners also were so protective and loving towards them.
There is one story I read that once Akbar's son Salim's deer(pet) somehow wandered and opponent army caught it. This deer went on crying calling for its owner. The Mughal army was scared to go and get it back as the prince wanted as it involved risking life. So at late night he walked over and entered the enemy lines to get back his deer. He was a kid so may be disregarded the risk to life to get back his pet.
Even Maharana is more identified with Chetak than his any wife. To be honest till these serials started I had no clue who was Akbar, Pratap etc wife name at all. But I had read and heard of Chetak in childhood only.
