Blast from the past: When journalism was at its wittiest best

There was a time when journalists unleashed an actor in their wittiest best. Be it magazine, tabloid or a page 3, actors male or female were captured in uninhibited moments and at times were even mocked for their outrageousness. Subtlety was maintained but that didn't stop them from calling a spade a spade. Check out these paper clippings closely and you'll know what we mean:

When Nirupa Roy was criticised for showing off her varicose vein on camera

Nirupa Roy criticised again for not looking "coy" enough!

If that was not enough:

What gifts do we have in Santa's bag for these celebs?

A chastity belt for Hema Malini, an 8-ft long bed for Amitabh Bachchan, a darker shade of lipstick for Rishi Kapoor...oh! Santa has bagful of such gifts for other celebs. Check out the above pic.

One main thing I take away is Somy Ali was soo hot 😳

Also Anil's reply of following the ant🤣...he will never give such answers anymore.

Journalists could get away with a lot during those days😆
Raj Kapoor's duddu🤢

Sanju baba's biopic needs another small time heroine for Rati..

And Sunil Dutt, though looking silly posing for the camera while the girl bats her eyelids at him, looks handsome

We need such journalism is needed to end the arrogance of bollywood celebs and their beleive that they are holier than cow. Dominance of 40+ heroes would have ended along with dumb statements from the flowerpots.

Some of them are sexist. And innuendo about heroines has not disappeared from journalism but is still quite prominent.

Most of them are so witty and outspoken, kudos to the journalists. I am surprised that there was such a culture prevalent, where they could actually treat stars in a deprecating, albeit light-hearted way and get away with it.

Some of my observations-

1. Nirupa Roy, smiling...geez, I had a hard time comprehending that:P But how could she help her varicose veins? Haha. THAT was a lil rude!

2. Rekha and "sexteen"...and the article about nymphomania, ROFL. Very tongue-in-cheek. Looks like the enigma which is a part of her image has always been there from the beginning!

3. The one where the writer berates the starlet for wearing a skirt and calls the sari a garment of modesty...The poor woman's hind leg is barely peeping out, and her skirt is quite long😲 I wonder what he'd have to say when he looks at what actresses, or for that matter young women of our times wear now. He'd probably take a hatchet to himself. Shows how antiquated some of his notions were, and how old this article is.

4. One thing though...it shows that over the ages, our love for celebrity gossip, their personal lives, poking fun at their idiosyncrasies, continues. It's fascinating how all this fodder about them continues to engage and entertain us. And I do wish that writers of today would dispense with their "blinds" and be daring as their yesteryear counterparts.

5. And I agree with one of the above posters, some of them are certainly sexist- some blatantly, some subtly.Ranging from the Rekha and nymphomania article and the skirt/sari debate, to the one poking fun of Padmini's football stomach and Nirupa's varicose veins😕🥱 Still, a lot of fun to peruse them.

Thanks a lot to the poster for sharing, it was fun to look at these pics. They are memorabilia indeed.😳😃
