Part 5
Next Day - Handa House
Two o' clock
Although Mohinder had rejoined the office today and a lot of work was waiting for him, he had come home for lunch. Mohinder and Kabir both ensured that they have lunch at home with the family during the summer when Aditi was home from college because they wanted every possible opportunity to have some quality family time. Today the four of them were having lunch and making a gala time out of it when suddenly Geet questioned her father nonchalantly "Papa... when should Saks and I come to the office to check out the new games...?"
"Check out new game" was all Rano registered "What's this about checking out the new game...?"
"Mumma... you forgot already... Papa had a surprise for me na... he told me all about it in the morning... well I get to test two of the new video games that have been developed this past month" Geet told her mother, feeling proud of herself.
"Letting her test video games again was your surprise... you've spoilt her... most of her concentration stays in those stupid video games... you do remember that I explicitly told you no more of this video game nonsense in this house... I want my children to know the importance of flesh and blood people and not just be into gadgets, apps and stuff... I..." Rano burst out on Mohinder
"Rano... Rano... they're grown-ups mature enough to understand things, analyze them and then take an informed decision by themselves... they do not ignore people to pay attention to their gadgets... and it's not as if they don't have games on their phones now... everybody has it and are addicted to them... but you also know that our kids may like to play with them but aren't addicted to the heights of insanity... these games just act like a stress buster for people" Mohinder cut Rano's tirade in between
"Yeah but still... haven't you seen how people just stick to their phones and just keep playing and playing or doing whatever with no regard to anything or anyone, not even their surroundings..."
"Mumma... have you ever seen us do anything even remotely close to that...? We know all about it... its annoying and unhealthy... the point your worries are baseless... we know it's not that great to be just cooped up in front of the game... and you worry sooo much... you didn't even wanna let us have proper smartphones when we were allowed our personal cellphones after school... I would have probably been bought Nokia 1100 when I was going to college... if bhai had not insisted and gifted this phone to me..." Aditi pitched in trying to calm down her mother
"Come-on... let it go Rano... they're big responsible adults and not small school going kids..." Mohinder chipped in
"Yeah... they might have grown older but still act like 5 year olds..." Rano retorted
"Yeah well this 5 year old little princess of mine is the best game tester that I have... please don't take her away from me..."
"Well I don't understand how good she got at gaming... that's still a mystery to me since I never let them play that much especially her... I watched her like a hawk as she was always very sneaky because she loved those games..."
"Rano, Princi is a computer whiz like me, her game testing and making cheat-codes is just ingrained in her..." Mohinder said while pulling his collar
"Yeah yeah... fine just make her play games, that's all she does... test your games, take an interior decoration project here & there, paint and do this and that...I can't even keep track of all the various activities she undertakes... why can't she have a proper career...?"
"Mumma... you know I get bored easily... and this varied work is good... and see I'm more versatile than others you know like Jack of all trades'... so can I please go test those games please... pretty please" Geet tried to explain to her mother for the nth time.
"Fine go"
"Thanks mumma you're the best... I love you... so back to my initial question when do Saks & I come for testing" Geet turned back to her father while Rano rolled her eyes
"How about around 4 today...?"
"Perfect Saks and I will be there"
Six o' clock
In a small playground of an orphanage a girl in her early twenties was playing with 15 other smaller kids ranging from 5 year olds to 13 year olds. They had finished their play time with the old tradition of ring around the roses', and now after the we all fall down' they all sat and were singing the Old MacDonald had a farm' song. The girl and the older kids were trying to imitate animal voices for the song while the younger ones reactions ranged from laughing to "you need practice" and then giggling due to all the tickling they received from the girl.
"Hey guys" a girl shouted from the orphanage entrance, she was pretty had straight black hair and was dressed immaculately in a pair of well-worn skinny jeans and a pretty designer top. On seeing her the youngest and the nearest ones ran to hug her while all the kids said "Hey Saks di"
"Gee... you calling me Saks was fine... why did you teach these kids Saks too..." Saks pouted at her bestie and then to the kids "You guys... start calling me Sakshi not Saks... okay... By the way guys Sangeeta aunty asked me to send you all inside for your evening milk that you guys tried to skip today... and if you all don't go have your milk in the next 15 mins... you'll not be given any of the yummy sweets your Geet didi has brought today... So hurry up... inside all of you now..."
The cancellation of the sweets was a big no so all the kids were already running back inside to wash their hands and chug down the milk all the while screaming "Fire on the mountain run, run, run!" while both Geet and Sakshi were laughing at their reaction.
"Sorry Gee... I couldn't make it to the game testing today..."
"Hey since when did you start apologizing to me haan... but what kept you... you were cryptic about your excuse... and how did you know I'd be here"
"Well who else would know... I know you well enough to know what you'd be doing if you're free... and also because you own this orphanage and you try to be here almost every day if possible and for the past week you've been busy with Kabir bhai's wedding" Sakshi said while plucking out leaves and grass from Geet's hair
"Yeah well you know these kids have nobody but each other and me... and I love spending time with them... but you know that already... you're to tell me where you've been busy this past month... you've been keeping insanely busy and I don't know about it and its killing me"
"Well... do you remember my mom looking for prospective grooms for me..."
"Yeah... she found a few and we made fun of some of them but ultimately rejected all" Geet said while remembering their antics in rejecting all the prospective matches brought by the ladies of the society
"Yes well she found another guy... and I ran out of excuses for not meeting him... you were also busy, I couldn't find any other way to refuse so I decided to meet him..."
"Babes I'm never too busy for you... you should've told me... I'd have come to your aid within seconds..." Geet cut in
"But you were busy with Kabir bhai's wedding preparation and then the flu in the orphanage... you were swamped with work... I didn't wanna bother you for what I could've handled myself and seriously with the designing of your dress it slipped my mind... so when mom fixed the meeting I didn't make a fuss but went along with it..." explained Sakshi
"So did you meet him...? Did you reject him... what happened..."
"I did meet him... and you know I went with the full intention of finding something bad about him and rejecting him..."
"And..." Geet prompted when Sakshi took a long pause
"We ended up chatting for hours and hours... and then we've met each other again a couple of times... and finally both our parents are meeting each other including us this weekend..." Sakshi finished in one breath and then waited anxiously watching her best friend's stunned features
"What... what the hell are you talking about... what happened when... how..." Geet started rambling
"I've kind of started liking him" Sakshi blurted, to which Geet replied with a gob-smacked expression "Get out of here"
Seeing her still lost in the shock of her statement Sakshi stared shaking Geet to bring her back to normal "Geet... earth to Geet... Geet to earth..."
"aa... bb... aa... aa... huh..."
"Geet get a grip..."
"You like a guy... since when and why didn't you tell me from the instant you realized it... why would you not tell me... we tell each other everything..."
"I'm sorry Geet... I wanted to but I was so confused myself... everything happened so fast... and both of us being busy did not help either... I'm sorry... please... if it helps you're the first one I've confessed my feelings to... I'm sorry for not telling anything before..."
"I'll forgive you... but details girl... I want all of them... you can't leave out even a teensy weensy one..."
"Duh... who else would I tell..."
"So... what are waiting for - snowfall...? Out with it... spill all the beans now... I can't believe you really like someone and if all turns out well you'd be getting married soon"
"Hey hold on... not so soon... I've told mom I'd like to know the person well before marriage... and you have to help me convince everybody about that..."
"That's to be done later na..." Geet cut in "stop stalling and details first... how does he look... what's he like... what work does he do...tell all..." she demanded, her hazel brown gaze avid with curiosity.
"He's tall, well-built no flab and all - not that I could see, good looking... I was almost smitten by his looks the first time I saw him... he seems sweet, we have a lot of things common... ... ..." Sakshi went on explaining her (maybe) would-be fiance and their meetings...
