Popular Pakistani actor Sanam Saeed is quite excited about her next Pakistani television project " an adaptation of author Arundhati Roy's book, The God Of Small Things. Here, Sanam talks about her Bollywood aspirations, how she missed a chance to work with Shah Rukh Khan, and why she is not skeptical about playing a mother on TV at the age of 30.
In your opinion, do movie and TV adaptations of books live up to expectations?
In Pakistan, many novels are made into TV dramas. Therefore, it is a trend. The authors are also onboard. For this one, we didn't have Arundhati with us, but she was happy to hear about the adaptation. I was surprised that the book hadn't been picked up and adapted in India already. I am glad I got the chance to do this show, which is essentially about Ammu, the mother of the fraternal twins in the book.
At 30, you will play the role of a mother. Usually, actors have reservations about such parts...
I am sure other actresses have reservations about essaying the character of a mother early in their career, but I don't. I am confident about my age and image. I look much younger in any case, and I get offers for younger roles as well. People tell me that I should not get typecast in certain parts. However, if the role is good, I don't mind playing an older character, even if it is that of a mother.
Will you be visiting India soon?
Yes. My earlier show, Zindagi Gulzar Hai, got a fabulous response from the Indian audiences, and I want to come to Mumbai to promote my next one. I couldn't make it last time, but I would love to come to India.
With Pakistani actors like Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Mawra Hocane making inroads into Bollywood, do you also want to do Hindi films?
If the script appeals to me, then why not? It is one of the biggest movie industries in the world, and we all enjoy and learn so much from it. I did get offers in the past, but I haven't been available for them. In fact, the film Mahira is doing with Shah Rukh Khan was first offered to me. I couldn't personally audition for it, as I was getting married then. But I had sent a video. I am glad that Mahira got it, as she is a die-hard Shah Rukh fan. She was destined to do it. Now that I am free, I hope to come to India and meet more makers. Among the actors, I love Kangana Ranaut; she is my new idol. I also like Farhan Akhtar and Aamir Khan.
