I have a penchant for courtroom dramas. I love reading novels based on lawyers and also watched some english courtroom shows. But the court trials shown in our Hindi shows always disappointed me, BALH had some of the worst ever court trials, tried watching a Hindi show on courtroom drama, that bored me too.
Considering the standard of courtroom proceedings shown in Indian tv, today was a very good episode. I won't say it is 100% realistic, but good arguments and good body language from both the lawyers.
The truth about Ayaan will have to come out someday, why not now.. Sooraj's attempts to delay the inevitable doesn't really make much sense. AK had his daily dosage of exercise by walking along the long corridors of the court ;). The attempt to create suspense of whether AK will see Ayaan defending Ram or not didn't work with me, at the middle of episode, I wished they would cut it short and end the suspense.
Aarav's next appeal is to his mom, to save his father. His plea seems to have some impact on Disha. The kind of trust Aarav has on his father, this is what I thought Disha would have, based on the early episodes, but alas... :(
I thought the hearing went much beyond the scope of a bail hearing. I don't think lawyers discuss on the charges and whether the accused is guilty or not in the bail hearing, the arguments should have been on whether Ram can be given bail or not, that will be decided based on whether the court considers Ram as dangerous enough to be let out or not. The prosecutor himself accepted that Ram is not a hard core criminal and his supposed crime is done due to frustration & desperation of not having money for Anu's treatment. The next question should have been whether Ram can be trusted enough to not to abscond if he is let out on bail. But both the lawyers went deep into discussing about the case and Ram's guilt vs innocence. Prosecutor again & again demanded Ayaan to prove Ram's innocence. In my knowledge of our legal system, the accused (or their counsel) need not to prove his / her innocence, it is the responsibility of police & prosecution to prove the guilt of the accused, and the defence lawyer only need provide valid arguments to counter the proof and evidences submitted by the prosecution.
Anyway barring these points, both the lawyers were bang on. I didn't expect the makers to bring out the finger print on the life support switch so early in the court proceedings. It was an interesting set of arguments to watch, prosecutor talking about Ram's finger print on the switch, Ayaan countering about Anu's finger prints and then the arguments escalating to how Anu's cot got pushed near the switch. Certainly I didn't expect such detailed discussion on the happenings. Ram accepted pushing the cot, but Ayaan questioning the prosecutor if Ram's intention was to kill Anu, what was the need to push the cot.. I am not going in detail about each and every arguments, on the whole Ayaan successfully managed to counter all the arguments made by the prosecutor, the scene has to be watched to appreciate it fully, Ayaan also kind of accepted that he doesn't have any evidence to prove Ram's innocence, but as Ram is not a cold blooded criminal and also respected widely both in personal and professional life, he has to be let out on bail. Ram's love for Anu was also discussed, though the prosecutor managed to make a claim that the love doesn't imply that he didn't kill his wife. Ram's reason for not attending funeral and then why he didn't surrender to police after the immersion of ashes, everything brought into focus (with evidences). The nurse's statement to police was also broughtout and Ayaan submitted a new statement form the same nurse about Ram's immense love for Anu,
The court scene was very detailed and each & every aspect of the case had been discussed. Ayaan was very good in the court scenes, and the prosecutor was a equal match to him.
Overall it was a very satisfying watch.
Precap : Finally AK reaches the courtroom just as the judge is about to grant bail, AK trying to order judge to not to grant bail, guess AK is going to make a fool of himself tomorrow. Wish judge orders arrest of him on the grounds of contempt to court ;).
