Nandini OS - Looking Within

Her life, as a child, in the USA. Her father was a scientist, forever busy but always making time for his baby girl. Teaching her about planets and the twinkling but very powerful stars. Her mother taught her about fireflies and true love. She remembered the love her parents had shared. Always smiling at each other. So much laughter in her home. And then on one fateful night, everything was taken away from her. A white flash, a dreadful accident and her parents were gone from this world forever. She was left alone to take care of herself and her baby brother. Then Amms had taken her in and brought her up. But as much as Amms had been there, Nandini had pretty much single-handedly taken care of Rishab, ultimately taking the decision to move to Mumbai.

Mumbai, the city of dreams. And hers had been to become a scientist. But fate had again intervened. And she joined SPACE instead. And Pandit had happened. A teacher. Her teacher. Her Amms ka favourite student had turned out to be a lecher. He had tried to sexually molest Nandini. He had tied her up. And gagged her. And locked her up in a guitar case. The darkness. And he touched her. With his vile filthy hands. She was shaking uncontrollably and could feel her body going cold as she relived those moments.

But space was also the place where she met Manik. Volatile, broody, courageous, bully but so sweet, so caring, so loving. Her Manik. Thinking about him filled her heart with equal amount of love and pain. What she was doing to him right now was necessary. If she did not pull away now, she would never find herself. She would never be whole again. And it scared her. A tear rolled down her cheek. When would he understand that she was not sure of herself anymore? That her belief in everything was shaken? When?! She did not even have the energy to explain this to him anymore.

Why? She wondered. She had never wronged anyone. Then why was she going through this. She was only 17. Only 17. A teen. But she had already gone through so much in her life. She was so tired. She needed to sleep. Wake up anew, to find herself back in their small apartment in New York, to see Rishab talking, to see her parents alive. As if all that had happened, never happened.

She then felt his hand on her shoulder. She turned her head slightly, to find him right behind her. The sun, she discovered, had set. She had been standing like that, with her feet in the water for too long. Manik did not wrap his arms around her. In fact, he let his hand on her shoulder drop. He looked deep into her eyes. She knew he saw the unshed tears. And she saw in his, an understanding. He took one step back, still holding her gaze. And then gave a small smile, sad but filled with understanding. And she smiled back. He then retreated, giving her the space she so much needed.
