INDIAN IDOL: PLAYBACK OR POP MUSIC?

What is Indian Idol trying to find? The next playback singer like Saregama or the next popular sensation in the Indian music industry.

For long, we have been debating about voting for the right contestant, but when the judges and producers don't tell us what they want, then how can we be sure!

In my opinion, here is what I feel about Indian Idol:

It is about finding the next Pop Music star like Madonna, Britney, and Indian counterparts like Ila Arun, Baba Saigal, Alisha, Sunita Rao, and recently Abhijeet Sawant. That is why they keep harping on about performance, or at least that is how I think of Indian Idol.

Based on this I thought Ankita fit the bill to be the Indian Idol, as she was ready to rock MTV and the Indipop scene.

*For playback singing, people should try Saregama as that is where talented playback singers (Shreya, Sunidhi, Kunal Ganjawala, Sonu Nigam) get contracts from music directors. Also, Saregama contestants get groomed by the biggest music directors in the country and as we can see this year on SRGM, all the contestants (Junaid, Aneek, Poonam, Musarrat, Mauli, Amanat) are already receiving playback singing contracts!

If I had to choose someone for playback it would be Emon, Deepli and Amit. So, I would suggest that Emon, Deepali and Amit compete on Saregama next time (as Prashant is going to win this time). Also their talent will be appreciated more on a show like SRGMP where professional music directors will groom them and they will get immediate offers in the music industry for playback singing. Poor kids are on the wrong show.😕

Eggjactly...What I don't get is that initially these poor kids are hollered at to "Perform, Perform....." and when they start doing that the judges are all "its all about who can become the next playback singer" what the 😕 ???

Yeah, I think they need to make it clear what they want. Clearly, most contestants are not ready for playback apart from a few like Emon, Amit, Deepali, and maybe Puja. The others are just average singers with unique personality, and sometimes good performance. Among those average singers, I thought Ankita was strongest in performance and uniqueness and so I wanted her to Indian Idol. But now all this nonsense about "playback singing" is happening, and I wonder why with a prestigious show like SRGMP, talented contestants like Emon, Amit, and Deepali are wasting their time on Indian Idol?

By now Amit and EMon would already had recording contracts. They are on the wrong show!

It is sad that the producers don't make it clear wht the show is looking for. Otherwise, Emon and Amit would alreayd be big by now. Emon has a strong voice and with some grooming he could be huge in playback. Ditto for Amit.

I hate that these contestants are competing on this bogus show. Not one of the judges (apart from Malik) can help them get playback singing offers. And Malik has thus far not signed even ONE IDOL CONTESTANT.

Whereas in SRGMP Himesh, Ismail, Bappi da, ViSHAL, Shekhar are signing contestants from their and other gharanas!

What a waste of talent!

Emon needs a few more years for his voice to mature. so may not suit the big stars out there except perhaps Shahid Kapoor, Zayed (those young looking stars) etc.

Amit is ready for Playback his vocie would suit any hero even the superstars, though he has to start Classical music training.... His voice has a khanak..

Deepali has a sweet voice too. Actually I thought even Smita had a good voice for playback.

Alas, in the Top 3 now, its only Amit as per my personal opinion who is somewhat ready..

I agree, they should have tried in SRGMP.. Even the weakest singer like Mauli Dave has now found her niche and her voice is getting better and better, with the kind of training she is getting.. As for the others like Amanat, Raja, Aneek... we can all see the results... Imagine the kind of grooming Deepali, Amit, Emon would have got. In II they seem to be more interested in Look makeover rather than the Voice makeover!!

Indeed they would have got their first breaks and recorded songs by now!!!!

It is really sad, and people always say that singers in Indian Idol are not improving. Well how can the improve without proper guidance, this is again not a platform for playback singers and the proof is the lack of training they are receiving. Poonam when she came on SRGMP was an ordinary singer, but today she sounds like a million bucks. Ditto for Mauli, who has improved tremendously over the weeks!

I feel the panel of judges should consists of music composers like SRGMP. Even in SRGMP the mentors they promise them breaks like Vishal & Shekar they are making Junaid's album.

I wish in Indian Idol we have such judges, who promise and keep their word not like Anu Malik who promises and forgets it.

I feel it will take a lot of time for Indian Idol contestants to actually sing for established stars in the industry, even though Antara and Karunya have got a break to sing in bollywood I feel they could have done better cos those songs were really not good. 😕

II needs to tell the viewers correctly what they r looking for...

with taglines like "ek aawaz jiske ho bharat ko naaz" ..surely they arent looking for a performer 😕 then when final 13 were selected for the galas...mini said "yeh hai desh ke 13 sabse achche singer"

so what do they want? if they want more of a performer, they shud make it clear..i am sure then no one will have any objections on contestants like ankita...the problem is that II projects itself as a singing comptt..n then the judges say we want performers..

Atleast they have got noticed, have a ready fan-following. It upto them now how they cultivate this. Yes, they wont have things served on the platter, but if they have the talent they would get offers..They have to struggle.

Karunya was a runner-up due to regional voting but he got offers and sang in 2006's biggest HIT movie. Naresh Iyer got a a HIT in RDB. True talent would be noticed. Abhijit Sawant also had offers and his second album is also good.

So, if Amit really works hard as he is doing he will get a break. But for Now I hope Emon/Amit gets to the TOP 2. That would one step closer to success and establishing themselves.

It will take time..They need to have a unique voice yet suit the establis stars, and get that Elusive HIT song also.
