Marriage no bar!

These 12 actresses prove that marriage is not a hurdle when it comes to their career

Marriage no bar!

Of the many reasons we love the Hindi film industry one is its knack of defying convention. While women in the not-so good old days were asked to sacrifice their careers for the sake of family, today's actresses have proved that women can balance their passions as well as their family life with ease. And what's more, their marriage hasn't hampered with their success either! They're growing leaps and bounds, ushering in a new age where marriage is indeed no bar.

Kareena Kapoor Khan
Kareena has always been a force to be reckoned with. Ever since she tied the knot with actor Saif Ali Khan in 2012, she has only upped her game. An established actress and fashionista, she starred in a number of films such as Satyagraha, Talaash, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein and Singham Returns post her marriage. Kareena also has a number of plum projects, like Udta Punjab and Bajrangi Bhaijaan that she is working on. She's been a commanding presence on the fashion front too and she recently stole the show at the finale of Lakme Fashion Week in an Anamika Khanna ensemble

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Aishwarya has been unstoppable since she won the Miss World crown in 1994. So when she married Abhishek Bachchan in 2007, things were no different. Continuing to work in both Indian and international film industries, she acted in films like Jodhaa Akbar, Guzaarish and Raavan in Bollywood while also bagging roles in The Last Legion and Pink Panther 2. After her impactful performance in Guzaarish, she took a break to be with her daughter Aaradhya. But Aishwarya Rai Bachchan hasn't been out of the limelight and makes her presence felt at events here in India, as well as representing the nation at international festivals like Cannes Film Festival. She's currently working on her next project, Jazbaa. And will soon start shooting for Karan Johar's next directorial venture, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Kajol
If Kajol was an excellent actor before she married Ajay Devgn in 1999, she has gone beyond that post her nuptials. She worked in a number of films, including the blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, before taking a sabbatical to start a family. But Kajol was back with a bang 5 years later with Fanaa in 2006. Maintaining her presence with special appearances and endorsements, Kajol gave strong performances in My Name is Khan and We Are Family. To top that off, Kajol has even arrived on the fashion scene and is already working on her next film, Dilwale, with Shah Rukh Khan

Vidya Balan
The fantastic actress married producer Siddharth Roy Kapoor in 2012. Soon after her wedding, she took off to complete her duties as a jury member for the Cannes Film Festival. She was seen in films like Ghanchakkar and Shaadi Ke Side Effects and even lent her voice to the character of Draupadi in the animated version of Mahabharata. She continues to be an ambassador for women's rights and starred in commercials for national women's health schemes. She is currently working on her next film, Hamari Adhuri Kahaani.

Rani Mukerji
Even though she's only recently tied the knot with producer-director, Aditya Chopra, Rani is still working in full steam. Soon after her wedding, she starred in Mardaani, a film about a woman cop who busts a human trafficking ring. We can't wait to see what she does next!

Sridevi
This elegant diva married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996 but continued her film career with films like Judaai before she took her first break in 1999, only to come back with an unconventional TV series, Malini Iyer, in 2004. After the show's successful run, she took yet another break only to emerge stronger than ever in 2012 with the Gauri Shinde film, English Vinglish. But even during her breaks, Sridevi maintained a professional presence; performing at the 52nd Filmfare Awards on a medley of her own songs and even being a part of the board of directors of the Asian Academy of Film and Television. She also developed her passion for painting and even put her best fashion foot forward, as she was seen taking the ramp for major designers and appearing at fashion events, recently winning the Ciroc Filmfare Glamour and Style Award for Ultimate Diva.

Shilpa Shetty
Shilpa Shetty's marriage to Raj Kundra in 2009 was a beginning of a whole new chapter, as she tapped into her business side and became the co-owner of an IPL team, Rajasthan Royals, along with her husband. Strongly supporting her team, Shilpa is always seen in the dug outs and the stands. She even graced the judges' panel for the dance reality TV show, Nach Baliye. Along with her husband, she launched her own production house and even produced her first film in 2014, titled Dishkiyaoon. What's more, she is even an advocate for fitness through yoga and has released her own yoga DVD too!

Raveena Tandon
Raveena Tandon tied the knot with Anil Thadani in 2004. She changed course and focused her attention to television, as she played host to shows such as Isi Ka Naam Zindagi and Simply Baatein with Raveena. She has also judged a few reality shows like Comedy ka Maha Muqabala. Not only has she continued to be present and participative at many events across the country, she is making her way back to the big screen, with projects such as Bombay Velvet and a film with acclaimed director, Onir.

Karisma Kapoor
In one of the most glamorous wedding ceremonies, Karisma Kapoor tied the knot with Sanjay Kapur in 2003. Since then, Karisma has done a number of advertisements, magazine photo spreads and has even appeared on the dance reality show Nach Baliye as a judge. She made a comeback in films with Dangerous Isshq in 2012 and continues to dazzle on the ramp for many major designers. Since her marriage, Karisma has even engaged in philanthropic work and was the goodwill ambassador for the 2012 Pinkathon for breast cancer awareness.

Sonali Bendre
Sonali Bendre married her spouse, Goldie Behl, in 2002 and has since established a career in TV. She has hosted a number of shows, right from the dance reality show Kya Masti Kya Dhoom...! to the more recent Mission Sapne - a philanthropic project with other Bollywood stars. Sonali has even been one of the judges on a season of Indian Idol and is currently a panelist for India's Got Talent, along with Kirron Kher. She even made special appearances in films like Kal Ho Na Ho and Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbaai Dobaara!

Madhuri Dixit Nene
Pretty much at the peak of her career, Madhuri decided to marry Dr. Sriram Nene in 1999. And soon after, she gave three powerful performances in Pukar, Lajja and Devdas, before relocating to the USA in 2002 to raise her children. She returned to the screen in 2007 with Aaja Nachle. She also took on the role of a judge on a hit reality TV show and has done films like Dedh Ishqiya and Gulaab Gang last year. What's more, Madhuri was also named the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and has engaged in many philanthropic activities too!

Juhi Chawla
Married early in 1995 to her spouse Jay Mehta, Juhi Chawla's career took no stops even after her marriage. Since her nuptials, she has done over 40 films and has appeared in a number of television programmes. She has given some of her most noteworthy performances like Ishq, Jhankaar Beats, My Brother...Nikhil, Luck By Chance and I Am to name a few. Through her production house, Dreamz Unlimited, she has even produced four films and co-owns the Kolkata Knight Riders IPL team with husband Jay Mehta and friend Shah Rukh Khan. Her most recent on screen appearance was in a negative role in Gulaab Gang. Aside from this, Juhi has also been an active voice for radiation awareness, giving talks and attending seminars as part of the same.

Kajol (honestly because starring in Srk Films), Rani Mukerji, Sridevi & Kareena are the only ones who REALLY tasted "success" AFTER marriage.

Bebo is the most relevant today, despite flops. At least according to all major film research like Ormax and considering her future lineup. Its kinda always been like that with her though. She's given flops galore, even before marriage. She still leads the current younger crop like Alia, Parineeti, Sonakshi, Priyanka, though Kat and Dpad raced ahead.

Kajol and Aishwarya are still bigger stars than Rani, even though they haven't had a "hit" per say.

I have to admit Rani just gained more power as a "star" after her marriage with Adi Chopra. But I edited my post because I totally forgot that Kareena also had Talaash after her marriage. That was a great film with an awesome cast.

I would never be satisfied if I would be a Kajol fan. It's too obvious that only her friends want cast her, nobody else. And she's extremly repetitive. Starring only in Khan Films won't make her work more powerful. I would prefer to be a Kareena fan anytime.

And to Aishwarya, she's indeed a STAR! 👍🏼

Which is sad coz I do feel Kajol has a lot of screen presence and people love her in general.
Do you remember around when Kajol kinda slowed down in movies? I know MNIK, We Are Family, and that lame movie with Ajay were supposed to be her "come back" films

I appreciate the article's effort in trying to prove that marriage doesn't end a woman's career in show business I don't think the examples are fair and balanced. I don't think Sonali, Raveena and Shilpa are in the same league as a Kareena, Aishwarya and Kajol. Raveena might have been in her day but she is not now.

I think the 90s girls definitely went through a much longer hiatus because offers probably stopped coming in and they didn't have many options. And as much as I hate to admit it I think in cases of Sonali and Shilpa their successful husbands' power and connection probably played a part in why they have good careers now seeing as they didn't have much success to boast of during their single acting days.

And I'm sorry but Karisma doesn't really have a career now. All she does is commercials. The positive side is that it probably gives her finically independence, but it's not a career.

Yeah, tbh even Rani isn't relevant anymore.
Outta the list, I think the ones that still retained and held onto their star status and power are Aish, Kareena, Kajol.

I mean sure, Bebo had a bad year in 2013 and completely slowed down and did one movie in 2014, but the fact is she's still working in relevant films.
Like upcoming Salman movie (which I'm NOT excited about) and two other greater projects with good directors

Kareena and Vidya have been flopping like no man's business post marriage.
Aishwarya + Kajol have been inactive for like 5 years each...
Even Sri has no films on hand, and she filmed English Vinglish in 2011...
Shilpa Shetty hasn't had a release since like 2007...
W*F is this faux list.

Not to take any credit away from Kareena herself, because there is something about the girl you just cannot ignore, but she did get married in the right time and right era. Filmmakers are changing their attitudes. Audiences are maturing.

I think in cases of Kajol and Aishwarya it was their choices to take time off for their kids. Madhuri and Sridevi was a combination of getting married at the wrong era (I keep repeating this word but it is amazing how much Bollywood has changed from the 90s and early 2000s) and also their ages are catching up with them. Ash, Kareena and even to an extent Kajol still look young or young'sh for their age. Sridevi and Madhuri don't.

Absolutely!
The times make ALL the difference.
Part of the reason I keep saying that Vidya is lucky to be in today's time, otherwise Tabu did EXACTLY the same type of movies and roles.

Difference was, audiences were not ready for that kind of actress back then, and Tabu never got her due.
Vidya did, since audiences are now open to different genres of movies rather than just song and dance.

IMO, Tabu >> Vidya Balan
