Aahil walked on like a man on a mission. He had to first find that old, evil woman to know where Sanam had been kept. On his way, he collided with someone.
"Aahil Bhai?" Aahil looked up to find Rehan standing before him.
"You look perturbed. Is anything the matter? Is Sanam okay?" Rehan asked concerned.
"She is NOT okay; I am going to go bring her back." Aahil responded frustrated.
"Allah! Did she go out by herself or something? She didn't seem well tonight. Did she get drunk?"
"Sanam did not get drunk. The woman in her room did." Aahil replied with obvious distaste.
"Excuse me? Sanam IS in her room right?" Rehan was bewildered. What happened to Aahil Bhai now? Did the two fight?
"Sanam has been kidnapped by Razia Bi. Instead, she replaced my Sanam with her lookalike who is now in Sanam's room. Rehan, I want you to keep an eye on that vile woman until I bring Sanam back. I will deal with her. Later." Aahil decided and went away to look for Razia Bi.
Rehan remained rooted to his spot. Sanam wasn't here. Her lookalike was. Sunehri.
He rushed to Sanam's room.
He walked in to find Sunehri sprawled on the bed. There has been a fierce misunderstanding. Sunehri wouldn't do this. Razia Bi would have forced her. He ran over to her and bent down, holding her face in his hands.
"Sunehri, wake up, please get up. I need you to tell me everything." Rehan was desperate. He knew Sunehri had been a con woman and was mercenary but he wasn't willing to believe this was only for money. There was something missing and he had to find out what that was. It was deeply upsetting though, the way Sanam had acted today, or so he thought, was degrading. He had been genuinely happy for them both. He had no feelings for Sanam except platonic as a sister in law, as she was wedded to his brother Aahil.
The same Sanam who wouldn't stop at anything to help those in need, was, had been in need, for so long, he didn't know how long, and here they were, partying and having fun.
His gaze again shifted to Sunehri. He had searched for her everywhere and she had been right under his nose. Then, he realised, he had probably told her about HERSELF on the night of Diwali! He remembered his conversation, with who he thought was, Sanam.
"I met someone exactly, like you, yet nothing like you Sanam."
"I wish I had never met her."
"I want to forget that period of my life."
Snippets of their talk flashed before his eyes and he felt terrible. Flabbergasted that the usually spit fire Sunehri had chosen to keep mum and not tell him anything at all. How he must have hurt her!
Seher was conscious, though not completely in her senses. "I want to dance, Aahil, take me there, it is so much fun out there." She was mumbling.
Something pricked in his heart. His lady love was calling out to his brother in the time of need. He knew it wasn't anything serious yet he didn't like it. Now he knew how Aahil must have felt all those times, when Sanam had chosen to go with HIM, instead of her husband Aahil. He could now empathise with his brother what then, he had deemed as possessiveness.
"Sunehri, its me Rehan." He said, while sitting on the bed beside her, brushing strands of her hair away from her face. Seher forced her eyes open and looked around, disoriented. She sat up as she registered it was Rehan with her not Aahil.
"Rehan, what are you doing here? Where is Aahil?" She asked as nonchalantly as she could at the moment.
"He has some important work to attend to and asked me to take care of you." Rehan replied, forcing the burning feeling inside to die.
Seher got worried. It was difficult for her to put up with her act in front of Rehan. If he remained here, it would become impossible. Moreover, she failed to comprehend the reason for Aahil to ask Rehan to do that, Aahil was possessive about Sanam, especially when it came to Rehan she had noted.
"No, I am good. I think I'll just wait for Aahil by myself." She said.
"You know, Sanam is a really good friend of mine. I know her really well. She is as selfless as can be. Oh, and Aahil Bhai loves her crazy, something you would have figured out by now. If something were to happen to her, God knows how he would react." Rehan broached the topic.
Seher looked at him as if she had seen a ghost. She began to smell something fishy. Why was he talking to her in third person?
"I know Aahil loves me a lot. I am his wife. What are you talking about?"
"He doesn't love YOU. Do not be under that mistaken impression. He could never love anyone other than Sanam even if that woman had the same face as Sanam's because Sanam is the epitome of beauty, not just in the literal sense, but in her mind and her heart. After, what you have done, SUNEHRI, I am ashamed of you more than I ever was."
Seher could just stare at him. "Why did you do that? I almost thought I was wrong about you. I was looking for you everywhere. I wanted your forgiveness. I wanted you back in my life. And, here you were, right in front of me. Didn't you see my pain, rather, could you not see my pain when I spoke harshly about you to you. You asked for forgiveness for your earlier ways and assured me that you weren't a thief anymore. Then, may I know what act is this? Coming in place of Sanam? But, you know what, despite all of this, in spite of all your wrong doings, I still can't help but love you. I still love you as much as I did." Rehan finished not bothering to see her reaction; he got up and stood facing away from her.
Seher was openly weeping. She didn't go to Rehan, she didn't hug him back, and she didn't fall at his feet. Instead, she replied, "You are to be blamed as well for what I did, you know." Seher began.
Without waiting for a response, she continued, "I had genuinely decided to tell you the truth then. I didn't want to keep it from you. I came there, to your place to steal. Later, I just couldn't. And, I realised I was in love with you. My luck, you found out before I could tell you. I was so angry with myself, so frustrated with fate for doing that to me, I was yelling at Bappa in his temple. Life has never been kind to me. I am an orphan with nobody for me. I accepted it. When, you came into my life, I thought finally, I too have someone, who lives for me, someone who loves me, someone who would be there with me forever. But, I had lost you before it could even start. I was broken..." Seher's voice broke, while Rehan turned around facing her, to listen to her.
Yet, she continued, "Razia met me there and gave me this proposition. I denied vehemently initially. She gave me five lakhs as an advance and I was so broken, so beyond repair, I decided to take it up. I didn't care anymore, you see. If I lost my love, because I had been a thief, and being a con woman was my existence, so be it. I decided to work only for money. By the way, it is important to tell you that, I already knew, for a long time, that Sanam was my lookalike."
Rehan raised his eyebrows at that, he was about to say something when she interrupted, "I have met you too before. Only, you thought I was Sanam. I was running from the police once, and I came into a hospital close by, I saw Sanam there, I didn't know who she was then. I was flabbergasted that there was someone like me out there. She was distraught, weeping for some loved one there. The next day, I was at a caf. When you came there, and spoiled my chance of earning some free money when you thought I was Sanam. That's when I realised Sanam was worried for Aahil the previous day. I just played along that I was indeed Sanam. In fact, now that I think about it, I have even met Aahil before, though at the time, I thought he was crazy. Do you remember the Sheikh who came to this house, for dinner once?" Rehan nodded, motioning her to go on.
"One of his three wives, the youngest one was me. I smacked his wife on the head and just came in place of her. The fool, didn't even realise his wife was missing." Seher smirked remembering the time.
Rehan's jaw fell to his knees when he heard her confess all these things.
"I obviously came here to steal. I wanted that expensive necklace that the Sheikh gifted to Aahil's wife. Ironically, I never saw Sanam's face then. I kept missing her. I went to that blind woman's room where it was kept. When she walked in, I thought I was caught, then I realised she was as blind as a bat." Seher laughed while Rehan flinched as she talked of his mother.
"Then my burka tore, I went to the kitchen hoping no one would see me, unfortunately Aahil just walked in at the moment, but surprisingly, he didn't think I was a thief. What he told me, amazed me, but because, I escaped through the skin of my teeth, I let it pass. He looked shocked to see what I wore, jeans and a crop top, FYI, and said, no ordered me to go change saying, it wasn't bad yet was inappropriate, and I couldn't wear that in front of the Sheikh. This was before, much before, I saw Sanam or you, so didn't make sense. Now, I know, he thought I was Sanam, and looking at her wardrobe, Sanam doesn't wear westen clothes." Seher giggled.
"Oh, I have met Begum Sahiba also once; I think I asked her for directions."
Rehan was appalled and flabbergasted that their whole family had been somehow linked to Sunehri on so many different occasions yet never known, Aahil Bhai, Ammi, himself. Fate played too many games for anyone's sound health, he decided.
"When did you come here as Sanam?"
He asked softly, not blaming her completely anymore. He felt horrible that somewhere for Sanam's present condition, he too was responsible.
"The day of the party, Razia called me to that hotel, and when the lights went off, I went in while Razia took Sanam, possibly, drugging her. At the same time, that blind bat, she came and attacked me all of a sudden, and I reacted instantly, twisting her hand. I came here only for the money. Initially, I felt Aahil was too stupid and a die-hard romantic to love his wife, as if she were some, Devi Maa on earth, I mean, seriously, how could any man love someone so much yet be so stupid to not recognize his wife from someone else. On Haya's wedding, Sanam came there and I panicked when Aahil almost saw her. But I hit her on the head, and luck favoured me. Whaat? I was doing my job." Seher rolled her eyes when Rehan gave her a disapproving stare.
"Razia again caught her I presumed. And that Sanam, the idiot, she came and hugged me! Like seriously, I almost snatched her husband from her and this woman comes to me with love and affection. No wonder, you guys revere her so much in this house." She said sarcastically.
"When Aahil proposed marriage, I was frantic and refused to Razia. But she later, increased my fees to two crores and I agreed. When Razia gave me the property papers that I had to get signed from Aahil, I realised what a conniving bitch SHE herself was. I thought two crores is a huge amount, but she was getting like, 500 crores and two crores from that is not even 1 percent. I was furious and I decided I wanted all the money for myself. I decided to run after getting my money."
"There is another thing that has disturbed me actually. Madam Begum hates Sanam, in fact, she literally got me killed thinking I was Sanam. The bomb in my car, was planted by her and her faithful slaves, Khala and Khalu. I survived thanks to Razia."
Rehan was shocked, "I don't think that's true... Am, I mean, she wouldn't do that."
"Do you think I am lying? I have told you everything now at the risk of you spilling it to the police and get me caught. Why on earth would I lie now?" Seher said with frankness.
"Anyways, now you found out everything. Go rub it off in Aahil's face that he couldn't recognize it wasn't his wife. She is really lucky, rather, WAS, lucky, to have such a loving husband."
"Didn't you think ONCE before doing all this, you could have destroyed Sanam's life completely, without her fault in any of this?" Rehan asked.
"I did. Then I realised, when God took away my love from me, why should I bother caring for anyone else's. I also realised that, Sanam and Aahil could have never been happy together, in any case. Begum Sahiba wouldn't let them, she hates them."
Rehan sighed. He knew that was true. Ammi wanted money.
"Say it." Seher ordered.
He looked at her comically, "Say what?"
"Oh My God, say that you love me dammit and that I am forgiven."
Rehan grinned, and moved forward to kiss her, "Yes you are." She couldn't respond verbally, as his lips on hers made her forget her abilities to think.
