It is a fine line right? We see an attractive person we are all bound to think "I'd tap that". We all salivate over an item song or a model like we would over a delicious meal. We also know to draw the line. We know that person is not a piece of meat. They are a human and as such deserve respect and consideration. We have learned not to think with our crotches. We know the difference between fantasy and reality. We know the importance of consent.

When people know the fine line, no one feels objectified or like a piece of meat.

Problem is when people don't know the fine line. When they treat you as an object of lust 24/7. When they cannot distinguish between fantasy and reality. When instead of treating people with respect they resort to behavior that is crude and lewd.

Priyanka is fortunate that she hasn't encountered people who forget the line. I hope she knows her peers who have issues with objectification aren't blaming Bollywood, they are blaming a society which doesn't know to draw lines and cinema that condones crossing the lines.

I dont think its as much to do with "Priyanka never encountering people who never objectified her" - i think that is highly unlikely going by the generally accepted definition of "objectification" , on the contrary I think its got to do a lot more with "Priyanka never letting anybody objectify her" , its a state of mind , i feel that Priyanka is right, in that , "feeling" sexy , ugly , important , useless , proud , worthless , objectified , dignified is all just a "state of mind" of the concerned person .. if a person constantly feels worthless , that person automatically reduces himself to that level ..its the power of mind .. certainly a healthy approach IMO..

However , if somebody breaches your personal space & deliberately passes a lewd/obscene comment then that IMO is a 'grotesque objectification' bordering on assault even if it doesnt involve groping..power of mind wont come handy there .. lets call it what it is " grotesque objectification"..

But i am not talking about the latter case here , what i am talking about is - take the comments on this thread for example , most agree that lyrics of an item song "objectifies" the 'item girl" , i do not agree to that , i believe the lyrics will objectify the item girl if only she lets it , otherwise IMO an actress can do a Bubbly Badmash , Sheila ki Jawani , Lovely ..etc & not be objectified but empowered instead ..

A lot of male actors do item songs , expose their chiseled body for the sake of female adoration & they even get that , some female fans are absolutely cray - but these men donot feel objectified in a grotesque manner but feel rather flattered , and i think Priyanka is going for something similar in this statement .. if Amitabh Bacchan disagrees then i disagree with him..

Yes. Objectification is subjective. Some people love to flaunt themselves and enjoy the attention. Some people feel violated even by a sidelong glance. There is no right or wrong way to feel empowered. Some people feel empowered when they flaunt themselves and develop positive sexuality. Some people feel empowered by being more modest, bashful and extremely private about their sexuality.

The important factor is neither side is dismissive of the other. The problem with PC's statement is that it is very dismissive to the concerns of other people who have their own opinion. Similarly, I find it problematic when people look down on someone like Sunny Leone for her choices.

Also being positive does not mean you condone lecherousness or sleazy journalism. Being conservative does not mean you demean other people's choices.

Yes absolutely , "feeling empowered among many other things is a state of mind" , some derive it through flaunting while others derive it through being modest , and both kinds are equally reasonable & i think that is what PC was going for while making the statement ; however, trouble starts when one kind starts to look down upon another.. i was only able to relate the former with PC's statement , hence i applauded it..

I dont see how PC having an opinion herself is automatically considered as dismissive of other people's opinion , in fact , i feel that by applying such a comparison people are indeed dismissing PC's opinions , so its more like the other way round & hypocritical.. i believe PC has a healthy outlook..
