PROFILE: Ankur Nayyar

Nitin Joshi

Kolkata, September 25: Talented, good-looking. That's actor Ankur Nayyar. He has earned himself a place in tellytown with his performances. He made his mark on Star Plus' Jeet. Then you saw him on Zee TV's Reth in which he was the protagonist — Shekhar — but he recently quit the serial. More recently, there was Hey Yehi To Hai Woh on Star One. There he played the baddie, Pran. These days you see him in full form on Kohinoor produced by Cinevistas that recently premiered on Sahara. Now this may sound cliched but the show is different — seems to have taken off rather smoothly. We caught up with Ankur for a brief chat. Excerpts:

What has the response been like to Kohinoor?
Very positive. So far so good.

You appear to be enjoying yourself as an actor?
Yes, I am. It's the first time I am doing a thriller. Yeh To Hai Woh had a thriller element. I always wanted to do a good thriller, with action. So yes, I am having a great time.

Tell us what the show is about.
It's about people who know their destination, who know what they want and who are working towards it. It's their journey. So it's about a group of people who meet because of the common destination.

Who do you play in it?
I play this guy called Samar Khanna who always has an ace up his sleeve, who takes things in his stride. He approaches things and situations in his own style. He has his own sense of humour. At one point he looks like a saviour. Actually, I can't reveal much. But under the shadow of Samar you will see different characters and faces. It's a great role. It gives me tremendous scope to perform.

Why did you leave Reth?
I can't handle two dailies. I did it for over a year. I thought it was time to move on. So my producer and I, mutually, decided that I would leave. There was no problem between us.

So you are content with one show?
As of now. yes. I would like to concentrate on Kohinoor only. Trying to take it easy. Maybe a little later I will take up something interesting.

Do you watch television?
Yes, I do whenever I am home and whenever I get time. And yes, I love to watch my own show.

How do you rate yourself as an actor?
On a scale of 10? I think three and a half or maybe four!

Being modest?
No, that's what I think. Seriously!
