LATEST INTERVIEW- INSTEP MAGAZINE ( 23.11.14 )

The reluctant heartthrob

Mariam Mushtaq November 23, 2014 Leave a comment

His Bollywood debut has earned him a legion of swooning female fans but Fawad Khan isn't one to take his sex symbol status seriously

The reluctant heartthrob
Fawad wears a blue Prince of Wales double-breasted reversible peak lapel suit and green woolen paisley tie with a single button overcoat from Republic by Omar Farooq. " Photography by Abdullah Harris.

Milli, the klutzy physiotherapist who steals Prince Vikram's heart in Khoobsurat, may have grated on our nerves, but can one really blame her for acting all giggly and idiotic around the dreamy prince played by Fawad Khan? This is the man who's making women across the subcontinent (and probably beyond) believe in fairytales all over again, forcing feminists to abandon their ideals (who doesn't want to be rescued by this prince and ride off into the sunset?) and generally creating mass hysteria wherever he goes.

When an interviewer asked Sonam Kapoor if she would have hit on Fawad had he not been married, the reply came out before the question was even finished, a resounding "YES!" Do we hear an indignant chorus of "Isn't it enough that she got to kiss him onscreen, won't she leave him alone in real life?" But Fawad will assure you that when it comes to the two of them, despite the sizzling chemistry they shared in Khoobsurat, there is absolutely no danger of them harbouring "gandi gandi" thoughts for each other.

Does he find her hot though? "Of course I do. I find all my co-stars hot, whether it's Sonam Kapoor or Mahira Khan or Sanam Saeed," says Fawad. "You need to find the person that you're acting opposite attractive to make the onscreen chemistry believable." But he makes sure to reiterate that the much talked about kiss between Milli and Prince Vikram never took place (and that's our cue to stop hating poor Sonam). "It was a cheated shot. When I read the script, I told the producer I can't do that. I wasn't ready to kiss on screen in my first movie. It wasn't something that I would be comfortable with and they agreed to work around that."

We're meeting in designer Omar Farooq's outlet in the actor's hometown Lahore and in person, Fawad looks even better than he does on screen. He's put on some weight since his Khoobsurat days, having admitted that his gaunt look might have gone a little out of hand, and he's sporting a moustache reminiscent of Hollywood's leading men of the '50s. Cigarette in hand and intoning in that rich baritone that makes women go weak in the knees, Fawad is every inch the movie star.

You wouldn't think it to look at him but his newfound stardom post-Khoobusrat is not something the 33-year-old is entirely comfortable with. "Yes, life has changed since the movie came out and all the attention does make me conscious. I am the sort of person who runs away from the limelight so there are times when I get exhausted. Having said that, any star who claims that they get mobbed every single day of their lives is totally bullsh***ing. It doesn't even happen to Shahrukh Khan anymore. The public has learnt to take celebrities in their stride. As for my popularity, I think the insanity is just a fad, people will get over it in a month or two," he says with a self-deprecating smile.

He couldn't be further than the truth. Had Fawad been just a pretty face, he might have faded from collective memory after a brief spell but he's a seriously good actor too, so much so that even critics who panned Khoobusrat for its clichd plot were forced to laud his talent. Top that with his impeccable manners and his effortless charm and it's easy to see why columnist Shobhaa De would gush over him and "and shamelessly drool each time Fawad takes in his breath and intones the royal Hum...'"

Mention the rather explicit article that De wrote about Fawad for an Indian website and he squirms in embarrassment. "It's flattering," he says, trying to find the right words to convey his unease with his status as the reigning heartthrob of not one but two countries. "Honestly, I find the title totally inaccurate. I fail to see what the fuss is about. I guess I'm fresh meat," he jokingly quips.

How does his wife deal with all the female attention? It can't be easy watching your husband romance the gorgeous Sonam onscreen. "One of the sexiest things about Sadaf is that she's a woman, she's not a girl. She can take all this in her stride. Yes, she's possessive but she's not a control freak. She knows this my job and the better I am at it, the better I'll be able to pay the bills."

Clearly besotted with his college sweetheart and now wife of eight years, Fawad dismisses the idea that celebrity marriages are singularly prone to ending in disaster, given the temptations at hand. "I think marriage is hard work, whether you're a star or a regular person and the odds of it breaking up are the same across the board. I can only speak for myself and I am completely in love with my wife. She's everything I want in a woman - she's sensible, she's smart and she's one of the most stylish people I've ever seen," he declares.

It does take an exceptional woman to be able to deal with a husband whose private space gets invaded so frequently. Anyone who's ever run into Fawad in public will vouch for the extreme display of patience and good humour he shows, even when he's on the verge of being mobbed. It's no coincidence that half of Lahore is proudly showing off selfies with the actor on social media; it's a clearly cultivated move on Fawad's part.

"I am what I am because of my fans and that's why I make sure I am accessible to them as much as possible. I'm not the sort of person who will let one person take a photo and refuse all the others. I have to please everyone, that's my job. Agar larkiyon ke saath loon ga tou phir larkay naraaz hotay hain, hence I have to make sure everyone gets the opportunity. It's not easy though; like any normal person, I too get apprehensive at the constant scrutiny. Kabhi kabhi ghabra jaata hoon."

But then, no one said being famous was an easy job and it's this very ability to get past your inner fears and embrace your public persona that makes for a true superstar. And while it may be too early to declare Fawad one just yet, he's well on his way to the top of the ladder. His successful debut and the effect that he has on the public haven't gone unnoticed and offers are pouring in. The actor, however, is reluctant to spill the beans until he signs on the dotted line.

"I am in talks for Battle of Bittora opposite Sonam but nothing has been finalized yet. There are also a couple of other big banner projects in India that my fans will be excited to hear about, as well as two movies in Pakistan that I am in the process of signing. All will be revealed in good time," he promises. "I find it rather discourteous to count one's chickens before they hatch so I'm not going to say anything about future projects till the deal is sealed."

That's Fawad for you - ever the gentleman. It's not easy to get him worked up over something but mention the conspiracy theories that abound in Pakistan over the Indians' agenda of not letting actors from across the border prosper in Bollywood and you get to see a hint of ire simmering beneath the surface.

"This is utter nonsense. Just look at the Indian market, its huge! And Bollywood caters to just one segment of the population; India has so many regional film industries, and successful ones at that. Actors often don't cross over yet are superstars in their own right. In such a vast market, actors from Pakistan make up one tiny percentage. Do you really think people care enough to go after them? Are we that important? I'm afraid not. How can we be so pompous as to assume we deserve that kind of attention where people want to bring us down?"

"Personally, I never felt I was treated any differently because of my nationality during my time in Bollywood. In fact, we all lived like a close-knit family," he continues. "Indians have a code of hospitality that is very strong and they went out of their way to make me feel at home."

Other than the Kapoor clan, though, the actor remained too immersed in his work to rub shoulders with A-listers. There were no high profile parties, no heart-to-hearts with Bollywood stars - Fawad will be the first one to admit he's guarded when it comes to letting people in.

"One day I saw Rishi Kapoor standing next to me at a patisserie in Mumbai. I'm a huge fan of his but I couldn't bring myself to go up to him. I felt as shy as any regular guy and the thought of encroaching upon his personal space wasn't very appealing."

This has been a recurring strain in our conversation - Fawad's belief that he still is just a regular guy'. You can be cynical and chalk his oblivion' up to a smart PR strategy but there's no denying that this endearing humility is part of a package that has millions of hearts racing across the nation. Pakistan has its first bonafide movie star of the current generation and we're smitten.

UPDATES AND RUMOURS AND SPECULATIONS

UPCOMING:

FAWAD CONSIDERED FOR AMRITA PRITAM BIOPIC PROJECT?

Priyanka out, Sonakshi in?

Turns out, the Sahir Ludhianvi-Amrita Pritam film has run into another roadblock. Reports state that Priyanka Chopra may not do the role after all and Sonakshi Sinha has been pencilled in to play Amrita's role. In addition to that, Arjun Kapoor is seriously being considered to play the role opposite Sonakshi, given their recent closeness. Newbie Fawad Khan too has been shortlisted for an important role in the film. Interesting!

Fawad in Sujoy Ghosh's film?
Buzz is that the hottie from Pakistan, Fawad Khan will be part of Sujoy Ghosh's film which also stars Saif Ali Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez. Fawad will apparently essay the role of a cop in the film. Can't wait. Source: Mid-day
let this be true please. FK are you listening? 😛
Fawad Khan, the action hero
DC | Subhash K. Jha | November 09, 2014, 00.11 am IST
Fawad Khan
Mumbai: Fawad Khan, the Pakistani heartthrob who had the ladies of Hindustan swooning in Khubsoorat, is all set to take his stardom to another level. Reliable sources say that Fawad is planning to produce an Indo-Pak film that will see him in a completely new avatar, as an action hero.
Fawad, who admits that he likes to change genres and his personality with every film, says he needs to pump up and look beefy for the role of an action hero. "I think I lost too much weight during Khubsoorat. I am going to put on some serious weight to get into the character for my next film."
So from the bearded, lean and gaunt royal look, Fawad is looking to go to a clean-shaven, beefed-up action hero's look.
Says the actor, "I want to play around with my looks. It's very boring to appear the same in all your films. People are then looking not at the character but at the actor. So yeah, I am really beefing up for an action role."
Revealing how and why he lost so much weight during Khubsoorat, Fawad says, "It was more by accident than by design. I wasn't planning to look so lean. Then it suddenly happened. I started taking my gym routine a little too seriously. I started hitting the gym really hard."
He also had to practise serious diet control. Says Fawad Khan, "I am diabetic. So diet control is a pre-given for me. I had to control all my cravings for food. But now I need to look heftier for my next film."

Someone Asked what was Fawad's Message to his Fans: Here it is:

FAWAD KHAN REACTS!

Hello My Lovely Fawadians!
Hope you're all doing good and find this message in the best of your health. Supporting your favourite celebrity is not a bad thing at all but if in case you plunge yourself into disputes and quarrels among people, then it can surely affect you or your favourite celebrity's feelings. Sometimes, we get so much indulged into disputes that we tend to forget that perhaps our celebrities are watching over our activities and it is affecting them to such an extremity that they are forced to come out of their shells and speak their heart out!
Today, an unusual event took place with my sister (Ayesha Naveed). I and Ayesha are die heart fans of Fawad Afzal Khan; Pakistan's one and only Superstar till date. He has been ruling our hearts prior to Humsafar days.
When Ayesha woke up today morning, she found Fawad's two lengthy messages in her inbox. At his request, here I am sharing his message with you all.

"Hi Ayesha. I'm repeating what I wrote to someone else. Not because my fingers have tired or I'm finding it hard to come up with something original but because I feel it can't get any more accurate than this. I feel sometimes that you unnecessarily compliment me. And then I feel guilty, because I feel I really haven't done as much to win this much love, honor and respect. I realize you may strongly disagree with my comment, especially after your wonderful compliments. The point I'm getting to is this - I'm honoured to have an admirer like you. I realize a lot of the times you're being protective and that really brings out a feeling of endearment in me. I genuinely respect your love and support.
I've also come to learn of your and Maryam's undying support for me across many social forums and platforms. And I hear they turn into heated debates at times. I won't lie. I've even had the chance to read some of these interesting battles. I'm not saying I don't enjoy this love, the feeling of protection and attention. Who doesn't? I'm even hurt at times by the sudden assumptions made about me out of which conclusions have been drawn. But then I choose to ignore the baseless criticism that springs out of rumour and assumption. It's best to stay silent in a room full of shouting people. You may as well be making a lot of sense but no one ends up listening. My point to you is pick and choose your battles more wisely. I think there is enough contempt amongst us all today as a whole nation. Squabbling over who is better than who and that too, so harshly, would mean we've drawn clear boundaries amongst ourselves in likeness to so many other things today that are tearing us apart such as borders, religion, caste, creed...and the list keeps going on. Buddy...it's entertainment. Not a freedom movement. Don't become a part of this open display of pointless criticism where logic and rationale is left far behind and it becomes a mindless and reasonless banter. I write this to you because I respect and appreciate your love and concern and nothing would make me prouder than to see you guys become a torchbearer of change. Exercise patience and look for logical arguments to become a part of. I hope I haven't offended you by taking the liberty to say this all. If so, ignore it. If not then please pass this message on to the other supporters. I'm sure it won't be a daunting task because there must be few like you. As always I thank you for all your undying support.
Love and regards,
Fawad A Khan."
So yes! Fawad Afzal Khan does get effect when we go out and talk to his rivalries' fans on social media platforms.
Just like Fawad, I would request you all to stop fidgeting around with people who does not support him or who give a damn to his work and advertisements. We should choose our battles more wisely and only take part in constructive criticism and logical arguments. We should stop comparing him to other celebrities because we should have full trust in our favourite artist's capabilities and devotion. For us, no other artist can ever compete with him or take his position in the film/drama industry. For Fawadians, he is the only super talented actor and a complete package that Pakistani fraternity has ever witnessed.
Hope you take this message seriously and pass on to the other Fawadians. Let peace prevail everywhere!

Love and regards,
Sara Naveed (the writer).

Also, Continuiung the discussion on what Payal said..that some Fans of Fawad have still not got the message..I do agree there!
You know yday I came across a sad thing on twitter...
There were few childhood pics of Fawad which were circulated on internet/twitter recently...
Those 4-5 pics, which we all have seen by now m sure!!
It seems Fawad had shared these with some relatives of his..and had specifically asked them NOT to share this anywhere on social media..as this is Private for him...
those relatives shared the pics with fans but message share karna bhool gaye shaayad 😕 and those pics got immediately posted on twitter and are now everywhere..and almost all fans of Fawad who are active on social media know them now!!
Jo Ho gaya woh ho gaya...but I just felt this Wasnt right! and as Fans...we should respect the privacy of our stars..however dear they may be! Adn in the name of exclusive and being that ONE CHAMPION fan who manages to get first hand pics of Fawad...and making sure to watermark them before publishing online..so that no one else gets to claim it...😆😆...is taking it a BIT TOO FAR!😕
I am sorry if I am hurting anybody's sentiments..but I am srsly a die hard fan of Fawad..but still I would want to respect his privacy and keep his pvt moments...just that..private!
He has said manytimes that he isnt a huge fan of social media and i think is active on it..more coz of majboori of today's times n trends..and given a choice..he wont bother to register on these sites as well..😆
Being a guy like that...and then fans..in the name of love...leaking his pvt pics..if i may say so...is maybe too much for him to handle as well!
offlate he has gone very low on twitter activity ..n though i keep complaining that he shud post regularly on twitter... but who knows..maybe he finds all this frenzy..a bit overwhelming and hence chooses not to be there!
Ps: sorry if i hurt anyone's sentiments with this post of mine!!

I agree with you. Sharing pics publicly uploaded by someone from an event or public place where a celebrity himself is posing is fine. But people should think twice before uploading personal pics of stars unless they share it publicly. I have also noticed this war among FK's fans to be the first one to find pics. While the selfish fan in me wants those pics...but then we dont know how comfortable he is with sharing personal pics.
We are fortunate that FK doesnt yet have the kind of security some of the BW stars have and obliges fans with pictures/autographs. But if his privacy is intruded upon too much it will change.
And please both Payel and you have to stop apologizing for posting your opinions. 😆
