Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film Queen 2 has reportedly become the centre of a legal dispute. According to a Mid Day report, Phantom Studios has approached the Bombay High Court, alleging that the project is an unauthorised sequel to the 2014 film Queen. The production house has reportedly sought damages of Rs 250 crore over alleged intellectual property infringement.
The report stated that Phantom Studios, one of the rights holders of Queen, has accused the production house backing Queen 2 of using its intellectual property without authorisation. It further claimed that several attempts were made to resolve the issue through discussions before the matter reached court. However, no settlement was reportedly reached.
A source quoted by the publication claimed that repeated communication had been sent to filmmaker Vikas Bahl and JioStar before legal proceedings began. "There was even a public notice put out and multiple communications sent to Vikas and JioStar as well, informing them before this step was taken," the source said. Another insider reportedly stated that Phantom Studios decided to move legally after learning that Queen 2 had completed filming.
The report also mentioned that Phantom Studios had issued a public notice in April, asserting that it owns 50 per cent of the intellectual property rights of Queen, including the rights to produce sequels.
Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut recently wrapped up the shooting of Queen 2. She shared glimpses from the wrap celebrations on Instagram, where she was seen celebrating with the cast and crew after completing the film's principal photography. The project has now entered post production, while the makers are yet to announce its official release date.
Released in 2014 and directed by Vikas Bahl, Queen featured Kangana Ranaut as Rani Mehra, a young woman who travels alone on her honeymoon after her wedding is called off. The film also starred Rajkummar Rao, Lisa Haydon, Mish Boyko and Jeffrey Ho. At the time of publishing, the makers of Queen 2 have not publicly responded to the reported legal claims.
