What begins as a dead body hidden inside a kitchen quickly turns into something far more layered, emotional and surprisingly insightful. Directed by Suresh Triveni, this Netflix dark comedy is not interested in being just another crime caper. Instead, it uses chaos, humour and dysfunctional family dynamics to tell a story about women who have spent their lives being judged, labelled and underestimated. And the best part? It never turns preachy.

A Murder Mystery That Isn't Really About The Murder

At the heart of the story is Rekha (Madhuri Dixit), a single mother living in Adarsh Colony with her daughters Jaya (Triptii Dimri) and Sushma (Dharna Durga). The writing balances humour and tension effectively. Just when things start becoming serious, a perfectly timed joke arrives. And when the comedy threatens to take over completely, the emotional beats pull things back into place.

Triptii Dimri Walks Away With The Film

While the entire cast delivers, Triptii Dimri emerges as the film's biggest winner. This is easily one of her most confident and complete performances in recent memory. She slips into Jaya's world with remarkable ease, carrying the character's frustrations, insecurities, humour and emotional baggage effortlessly. Her command over the Bihari accent feels natural rather than performative. More importantly, she nails every shade of the character. One moment she's delivering sharp comic punches, the next she's vulnerable, furious or heartbreakingly honest.

A major confrontation scene involving Jaya and her husband stands out as one of the film's strongest dramatic moments. It's emotional, explosive and beautifully acted.

The performance serves as a reminder of just how talented Triptii can be when given material that allows her to stretch herself.

Madhuri's Charm Meets Dharna Durga's Natural Brilliance

Madhuri Dixit brings grace, glamour and attitude to Rekha. The character is unapologetic, bold and completely unwilling to bend under societal pressure.

There are moments where the drama around Rekha becomes slightly theatrical, but Madhuri understands the tone of the film and leans into it confidently. She makes Rekha both flawed and lovable.

Dharna Durga is another pleasant surprise. Her performance feels refreshingly effortless. She never appears to be "acting" in the conventional sense. Instead, she simply exists as Sushma.

Her comic timing works beautifully, her emotional scenes land and she handles the character's growth arc with impressive maturity.

Ravi Kishan, despite limited screen time, leaves a strong impact and remains crucial to the film's narrative turns. Geetanjali Kulkarni, Arunoday Singh and the supporting cast all contribute effectively, helping maintain the film's quirky and chaotic energy.

Final Verdict: Dark, Funny And Surprisingly Heartwarming

Maa Behen works because it knows exactly what it wants to say without ever saying it too loudly. It is dark, funny, chaotic and occasionally absurd. Yet underneath the crime, confusion and comedy lies a story about women reclaiming space in a world determined to judge them.
