Chapter 25:

Another good one, but all the happy times have come to a stop, for now!!!!!

Paro's lines in the morning reminded me of Khushi saying something similar to Arnav... Here also Paro is annoyed because Rudra has been so busy lately... Now that I have read the entire update, I can't help but wonder what Paro wanted to say to Rudra... Poor Rudra!!!! Fell so bad for him... he had fnally managed to lay the ashes of his past to rest and right then Tejawat had to come find them!!!!

No wonder he'd been so paranoid and over protective of Paro throughout the entire year...

Okay everyone I'm back!

As many of you know I've been very busy with my schoolwork. I had three exams I had to prepare for, which I feel I did fairly well on. I said I was going to post on Tuesday, but I actually have some reading and an essay to do, so I figured I'll post it now than making you wait another day and get a bunch of angry emails haha!

Okay...so many of you needed tissues for the last chapter. Some of you asked if Paro was dead, which clearly means you didn't read my note on the chapter before reading. Obviously, you're wondering what's going to happen next. Is she going to die? What is Rudra going to do? I'm sure these thoughts have been running through your mind for the last few days. So in this update, you're going to see a very different side of Rudra...the broken side. This is the Rudra that has fallen apart because he feels that he is losing everything. This Rudra is holding onto his sanity by a thread. It's going to be pretty emotional. I hope you guys are ready, especially after hearing what thakur-sa's men had done to Paro...Oh boy. I hope you're ready. Here you go!

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Beep...Beep...Beep...Beep...Beep.

The steady beat of the heart monitor had sounded with those beeps for the last eight hours. In that time, Rudra had not left the room once. He remained seated in a chair placed right next to the hospital bed that held his unconscious wife. His eyes were glued to that monitor, watching as the lines made their steady peaks with each beat. If it dared to miss a beat, Rudra felt that he would collapse.

The last twelve hours had been the worst hours of his life. The minute Parvati closed her eyes, he thought that she had died in his arms. He froze, barely able to utter a single word. When he finally found his voice, he called her name over and over, and the tears wouldn't stop falling from his eyes as she failed to respond. He felt her pulse and found that it was still barely there. She was still alive, but so weak. Rudra knew that if he didn't spring into action now then he would lose her forever. Calling for an ambulance would take too long. He didn't have a car to drive her in, nor could he run all the way to the hospital with her in his arms. With time running out he did the only thing he knew would help: call Aman.

It was way past midnight, and he knew Aman would be asleep. Nevertheless, he made the call. The second Aman picked up the phone Rudra was yelling like a madman, and he immediately knew something was seriously wrong. Aman drove like a speed racer to Rudra's house and was stunned by the scene before him. He had seen so much bloodshed in his line of work and it never bothered him, but this was different. The man who was like a brother to him was sitting in a pool of blood, holding what looked like Parvati's dead body. Aman slid down on the ground, joining him in the red liquid on the floor, not caring that his white kurta and pants were turning maroon. Rudra was incomprehensible in this state, but he managed to understand that Paro was still barely breathing. With Aman's help, Rudra was able to get Parvati in the car and Aman skidded through streets to get to Sri Desai Hospital.

Doctors rushed into the hall the minute the two bloodied men ran in with the fallen angel in their hands. It took three nurses to carry Paro away, and two doctors and Aman to hold Rudra back as they pried her out of his grip. The doctors instructed the nurses to put her in Intensive Care as soon as possible. From first glance, they already knew Paro was going to need blood and lots of it. Aman stayed by Rudra's side, waiting outside the room with him until they received news about her health. Aman paid extra attention to the man next to him.

Rudra was covered in blood. It was soaked in his clothes, smeared on his arms and face. His elbows rested on his knees as he stared down at his hands, which were shaking profusely, but he didn't seem to notice. Tears drops fell from his eyes onto the cold white floor. The entire time Rudra had not said a single word, and Aman didn't push him. He didn't know what had happened except that Rudra could never do this to Paro, not even in his dreams. She never would've been able to cause such damage to herself. So someone must've done it. But who? Aman had a feeling Rudra would know or at least have some suspicion, but he didn't ask. He knew that if he even mentioned Paro, the man before him would completely fall apart, with no hopes of being put together again.

It had taken the doctors four hours to complete their assessment and wound tending. The minute the door opened from Parvati's room, Rudra had snapped out of his trance and practically tackled the young female doctor named Ms. Kapoor to the ground. Aman was right by his side this time. Ms. Kapoor could see the anguish in both of them and she knew how deeply the woman in the room was cared for. She immediately asked which of them was the husband, and Rudra spoke up. Dr. Kapoor gave him the news that he had been dying to hear: his wife was out of danger. It was a miracle that she had survived. Parvati had suffered a severe loss of blood from the deep injuries she had sustained. They had found lacerations on her arms, stomach, chest, and neck. She also had a deep stab wound on her stomach along with a shallow one on her chest that just barely missed her heart. There were shards of broken glass in the wounds on her stomach, which is why it took so long for them to tend to her; they had to get all the pieces out. Aman flinched at the thought of Parvati being stab repeatedly with large glass shards. When he glanced at Rudra, he found that his friend hadn't even responded yet. They continued to listen to Doctor Kapoor's assessment.

Parvati's wounds had been properly tended to and should heal properly. However, she would have to stay in the hospital for awhile due to a needed blood transfusion. Parvati was still unconscious and would remain so until there's enough blood in her body to allow her organs to function properly. The next 24 hours were going to be critical for her health. Dr. Kapoor gave Rudra permission to stay with his wife as long as he didn't do anything to cause stress to the patient. As he nodded and entered the room, the young doctor looked at Aman who nodded as a thank you for everything she had done. Dr. Kapoor smiled and told him that he should get some fresh clothes for himself and his brother. Aman agreed and left.

Dr. Kapoor peered through the window into Parvati's room. Rudra had taken a chair and seated himself down in it. He remained right next to his wife, just staring at her, refusing to touch her in fear that he would hurt her. She watched the man's eyes scan the various tubes and wires attached to the pale woman before him, then at the pouch of blood that was hanging on a metal rod with a tube fusing the red liquid into Parvati. Her hair, which had been coated in blood, was freshly washed and dried. Various bandages were wrapped around the woman's arms, and a large bandages was plastered on the side of her neck. With one last look, the doctor sighed and walked away. Doctor Kapoor didn't want to traumatize the man further by saying that his wife was clearly protected by Bholenath. If they had come even a minute later it would've been too late. Parvati would've died.

Rudra had now been sitting in that very spot for the last eight hours. He never once left Parvati's side, not even when Aman brought him a fresh pair of clothes to change into. The clothes remained on a small table in the room. By now, the once fresh red blood had dried into a crisp with a dark brown shade on Rudra's clothes. Aman had managed to convince him to at least wipe the blood off his arms and face with a washcloth. However, that was the last response anyone had gotten out of Rudra for the last eight hours. After the first two hours, Aman went home, knowing that if there was any news Rudra would call him and Pia as soon as possible.

The young female nurse, who had been monitoring Parvati's progress for the last few hours, reentered the room to check her vitals. She wasn't surprised that the man who appeared to be the patient's husband was still sitting motionless. She had tried talking to the man, to assure him that the patient would be just fine, but it seemed that nothing she said would matter. The man clearly wouldn't believe anything until the unconscious woman awoke before his own eyes. She checked everything and, once seeing everything was fine, left again. After the eight long hours of silence, Rudra finally spoke to an unconscious Paro.

"Paro," his voice hoarse. "I know you can hear me. It's been at least twelve hours since you've been unconscious. The doctors said your life isn't in danger anymore. So why aren't you opening your eyes?"

He looked at her, knowing that he wouldn't get a response yet. So he continued, "It's because they don't know that you're still in danger isn't it? This feels like a terrible nightmare, and I'm trying to hard to wake up, but nothing I do works. I can't believe that after so long thakur-sa found us and...did this...to..." He took her hand in his. "Paro I'm so sorry. So, so sorry. I promised you that I would always be there to protect you, and yet you're here in this state. I know I don't deserve it, but I hope you can forgive me."

There was no response from Paro.

"You're really angry with me aren't you? That's why you're not waking up right? You can yell at me, hit me, not speak to me, it doesn't matter, I won't get mad. I'll bear it all, but you have to wake up first."

As the silence on her part continued, Rudra's anger rose, "You promised you wouldn't leave me, even after you said that cruel joke. So you have to get better. You have to open your eyes. This isn't funny anymore. You are not leaving me, you got that?"

Parvati didn't respond. Her eyes showed no movement. Rudra looked down at her hand encased in his. He remembered how, at night, he would hold her hand in his and kiss it tenderly, taking in the warmth and affection she had to offer. Now, as he placed his lips on those hands once more, he felt nothing but the coldness. Her body gained some color back into it, but it was still severely pale from her usual glow. Rudra put his head down on the bed as he tried to keep his tears in check. Hopelessness reared its head once more. He didn't know what to do. Anger didn't seem to work. It never did with her. Maybe his desperate pleas would get them somewhere. Bearing his heart to her always seemed to get a response from her, so maybe it would this time too.

"You...you can leave me if you want," he barely managed to say. "I would understand. It's because of me you're in this state. You're just so...perfect...and I'm...just a jallad. I don't say how I feel, ever. Even though you understand, I don't say how much I love and care about you as much as I should. Maybe your Bholenath is trying to show me that I've been taking advantage of your love all this time. I love you, and I always will, but I understand if you want to leave. You would be safer too." Rudra closed his eyes painfully. "Paro, just wake up. I promise I'll prove to you that I'm worthy of still being in your life...that I do care about you. I'll do anything...anything...just...please...just please...wake up...please...for your Rudra...pleas-."

"...R..Rud.."

Rudra's head shot up. His eyes focused instantly on Parvati. Was he imagining things? He thought he heard her call for him. Did she just-. He then saw her eyes rapidly move beneath her lids, trying to force herself awake. Her chest heaved a few times, trying to inhale deeply, but the pain of the wounds was still there, causing her to hiss a little. Time started slowing down for Rudra. He watched as Parvati used all her strength to open her eyes. The bright lights caused her to blink a few times to bring everything around her into focus. Rudra's heart finally began beating as she looked over to him. Her eyes filled with tears as she gave him a smile.

Parvati tightened her grip a little on his hand, "R...Rudra."

And that was when the dam broke. Rudra had been holding his emotions in for so long that the minute Paro touched him and uttered his name, he fell apart. He held the hand that was holding his so lovingly and cried, cried like he had never cried before. The strong man he was suppose to be for her took a backseat. He had come so close to losing her that if she hadn't touched him, he would've thought he was dreaming. But she was awake. She was here.

Paro didn't say another word. She could see the pain Rudra had been going through just by his eyes. He had never broken down this badly in front of her, and knew that what had happened had scared him. She wanted to cry too. There was a moment when she thought she wasn't going to make it, that she was going to die in Rudra's arms. But that wasn't the case. Paro knew that Rudra would never let anything happen to her. But that fear of standing at Death's doorstep...it shook her to the core as much as it shook him. She had heard everything he had said in her unconscious state. She heard the desperation in his voice. He begged her to wake up, and she had been trying for so long, but she didn't have enough strength. Right now, she was still trying to very hard to keep her eyes open. After awhile, the tears finally stopped and Rudra looked at Paro. He held her face gently in his hands, a worried expression written on his face.

"Why are there tears in your eyes?" he asked. "Are you in pain? Wait here I'll get the nurse."

She shook her head, "Wait."

He didn't move.

"I love you, Rudra."

Rudra let out a big breath that he had been holding. Hours ago, he thought that he would never be able to hear those precious words from her again. He would never get enough of hearing that. Rudra wished he could hear it every minute of every day. Those words, which were meant only for him, were enough to move mountains in his heart. He knew that he would be the only recipient of those three words from her.

Rudra finally stood up and leaned over Paro and kissed her forehead, "I love you too. So Much."

The irregular sounds of the heart monitor alerted him that something was wrong. He backed away and saw that the heart rate was accelerating unnaturally. He looked at his wife to find her hazel eyes as wide as saucers. Paro was hyperventilating, but her eyes never broke away from him. Oh God, was she having a panic attack? What was happening? Why was she freaking out? He moved forward and held her face in his hands. Concern dripped in his voice.

"Paro," he said. "Paro, what's wrong? What happened?"

She pointed to him, "Wh...what..is that?'

He looked down and found the cause of her anxiety. Rudra hadn't changed his clothes since he had arrived. They were covered in dried blood. Her blood.

"Are you hurt?!" she frantically asked. "Doctor! Call the doctor!"

He shook his head, "No, I'm not hurt. Paro, you have to calm down!"

Parvati was not listening. She was panicking seeing all that blood on her husband. She was screaming so loudly for a doctor that half of the staff had come into the room. Doctor Kapoor was one of them. Seeing the monitor beeping like a police siren and the patient's disheveled state, she immediately sprung into action.

"Nurses we need to sedate her!" she ordered. "Now!"

Some nurses ran over to hold Paro down. Rudra was forcefully shoved away, leaving him very shocked by the sudden turn of events. Doctor Kapoor rushed out and quickly returned with a shot. She stuck the needle in Paro's arm and emptied its clear contents in her. The entire time Paro was screaming that they shouldn't worry about her but her husband who was covered in blood. Rudra watched helplessly as the monitor's uncontrollable beeping regulated and Parvati drifted back to sleep. He felt guilt consume him yet again. She was okay just a minute ago, but yet again he did something to put her life in danger. If the doctors hadn't come it was likely she would've render herself unconscious, to a point where she could've not woken up. The doctor had stated stress was not good for her.

Doctor Kapoor came up to Rudra and said, "Mr. Ranawat, I think it would be best if you changed your clothes. The patient cannot afford to be stressed out again like this. Please understand."

Rudra nodded silently. His eyes remained on Parvati.

"The sedative will wear off in a few hours. I will come back to check on her then. If everything looks good, and she doesn't have another stressor trigger her, then we can most likely discharge her tonight. But first, it would be wise if you change your clothes."

Doctor Kapoor left the room. Rudra eyed the clothes on the small table that Aman had left for him. He quickly grabbed them and change in the bathroom, disposing of the other clothes he was wearing. Rudra was now dressed in jeans and a tight, black, long-sleeve shirt. He returned to Parvati's room and took his place on the seat next to her. He was back to the waiting game. Although he felt terrible for stressing her out, he was glad that she had woken up and called to him. At least he knew she was better than before. Now, he had to wait until she awoke again, and this time he would make sure there were no more problems.

Parvati did wake up a few hours later just as the doctor had stated. Her gaze immediately went to Rudra. She didn't panic or fret now, seeing that he had changed his clothes. Before she was able to say anything, Doctor Kapoor had entered the room to examine her. After an extensive check up and some questions, the doctor declared that Parvati was well enough to go home. However, she stated that she would need a few follow up checks ups just to be sure. It was night by the time the discharge papers came. During the wait, Rudra had phoned Aman and updated him on everything that had happened. Aman stated that he would be there to pick them up. He also quietly mentioned that he cleaned the blood out of his car and the Ranawat home. He knew that if Parvati saw that she would freak out. For this thought, which hadn't even crossed his mind, Rudra gave Aman many thanks.

Amandeep Singh arrived at Sri Desai Hospital just as Rudra was finishing up the paperwork. In his hand, he held a small bag with some clothes for Parvati that Pia had packed. After Aman had given his wife a detailed statement about what had happened, Pia was restless. Now that she knew her beloved family member was alright, she ensured that she would keep watch over Paro's health. Pia knew that she would need clothes and sent something of hers in a bag with Aman. Rudra gave it to Paro, who changed before a nurse wheeled her out in a wheelchair. Because of her injuries, the doctor had advised Parvati against exerting herself and from wearing any tight clothing. Thankfully Pia sent a very loose, pink anarkali suit for her to wear. The cotton material felt warm against her skin, and it didn't bother any of her bandages. Her hair was loosely braided with a few strands falling around her cheeks.

The nurse wheeled Parvati out of the room in a wheelchair. Rudra was listening to the doctor on the procedure on how to change the bandages when he saw her. Aman, who was standing in the hall, saw Parvati and smiled. He walked over to her and knelt down beside her so they were at eye level. Apart from the bandages and the slight paleness in her cheeks, she looked fine. This was a miracle considering the state he and Rudra had brought her in.

He smiled, "How are you feeling?"

"I'm okay," Paro responded. "Just a little tired."

"Don't worry. Rudra and I will get you home where you can rest all you want."

"Thank you Aman bhai-sa."

She gave one of those smiles that melted hearts. Aman stood up and took the handles of the wheelchair and began pushing Parvati towards Rudra. Silently, he sent a quick prayer to Bholenath, thanking him that the woman who was like a sister to him was okay. He was as worried about her as Rudra was, but then again, who wasn't? Aman still didn't know what had happened to her before he had arrived at the Ranawat home. No one was willing to talk about it, and he knew asking right now was not the best time. He would have to wait for the right moment. He was determined to find answers. This was his family's life that was in danger. Aman wheeled Paro to a stop in front of Rudra.

"Are you two ready to go?" Aman asked.

Rudra nodded. Without a second thought, he leaned down to Paro and picked her up in his arms, leaving her flabbergasted.

"Rudra!" she whispered loudly. "What are you-."

"I'm carrying you," he stated. "End of story."

Seeing the two in such a position, Aman nonchalantly walked ahead as Rudra carrying his wife trailed behind. She held onto him and leaned into his chest, too exhausted to argue with him at the moment. Rudra felt Paro's breathing even out against his chest; he knew that she had fallen asleep. As they exited the hospital, Rudra's grip tightened on the woman in his arms. Tejawat's words replayed in his mind. I will be watching every move you make. From this day forth I will not give you a moment's rest. And when the time is right, I will take everything you consider dear to you. He was already beginning to feel paranoid. He wondered when thakur-sa was going to attack and what his next plan was. He wondered if Tejawat was planning to hurt Paro again, or worse. No. It wouldn't. This time, he knows that Tejawat is near and is keeping an eyes on them. This time he will be able to protect Paro. No one was ever going to hurt her again. He was going to get to him before he ever gets to them. Parvati would never get hurt again. If Tejawat wanted to get to her, he was going to have to get through him first. Rudra wasn't afraid to start a bloody war in Lucknow if he had to. He would kill every single one of Tejawat's men in order to make him and Paro safe again. This wasn't a threat...It was Rudra's promise.
