Shah Rukh Khan in a tte--tte about classic remakes and whether the new book about him will reveal his darker side.

Do you think classic films - like 'Don' and 'Sholay' - are being remade for an audience outside India?

SRK: Not necessarily. I think older people, like me, are not alias-stuck. Remakes are more about, 'Wow, what a great film it was. I'm sure if I made it again, people are going to like it.' Of course there are a lot of critics who think that 'oh, they don't have a story to tell, so they're making the old one again', which I think is really stupid.

So many films are re-made. It's not for any other reason but to reintroduce classics to the younger generation, and say 'ok, guys, this was a very famous film'. It's not just meant for NRIs. Of course, the way it is being made now (is different). Because a lot of younger guys today are exposed to global cinema, so they're beginning to understand and speak the language of international cinema.

Do you think Bollywood has any essential characteristic that mainstream Hollywood cinema could benefit from?

SRK: I think it's our fantasies. I've always maintained that our fantasies are real. We have simple beliefs like: I'd like to get married to the girl of my dreams, take her to Switzerland for a honeymoon and, you know, live happily ever after. We are a nation which is just developing, and our dreams are little achievements.

Whereas in the Western world, the fantasies have gone sailing from some asteroid belt which is coming down next to Pluto to the president flying in some spaceship. I think Western cinema can take a bit of rawness from us Indians, and we can take a bit of fineness from the western films.

There's a book being written about you called 'King of Bollywood'. I think it's fair to say you're known as a very nice guy in the industry. Does this book show a darker side of you?

SRK: I don't know. It would be really ironic because I'm promoting it, and then I find out it says I'm really an awful guy. I haven't read it. Firstly, I didn't know why Anupama wanted to write a book on me. But she said, 'No, I think you're important enough to be written about'. So I said, 'Go ahead. Make my day. Write a book on me.' But I told her I wouldn't read it, until it's out in the market and other people have read it.

Thankoo, he has so much faith in Anupama to not read the book until its on the market. Just goes to show that he does not intefere with other's creative flows, even when he is their muse! 😳
