02 - First Few Words

"Hey!" Mandy let out an exhausted sigh as she almost dropped onto her best friend Mayi's bed. After a long and emotionally taxing evening the one person she needed was the woman now watching her with concern. Mayi's coal black eyes clearly voiced the questions she wanted to ask.

"You look like you could drop dead" Mayi commented giving her best friend a once over. Mandy had changed into her night clothes and devoid of make up her dark circles were visible and her blue eyes had a drained look in them.

"That would be a small mercy" Mandy snorted.

"Seriously, what's so bad that you wish you were dead?" Mayi raised her brows in surprise.

"Everything that could possibly be Mayi. My mother and brother are on war path again. Mom thinks that Theo screwed up when his only fault was he fell in love and explicitly trusted the bloody" Mandy stopped herself before she could swear.

"So Theodore's marriage is off" Mayi deduced "I am sorry Mandy that's awful" she gave her friend a much needed hug.

"Don't be Mayi, its better this way. I am grateful that Sarah ditched him before the marriage" Mandy sighed.

"We can talk about this later you know, you should sleep if you are planning to go to the studio tomorrow" Mayi said gently.

"I am not going tomorrow but yeah I am going to catch some sleep though I wonder if I will be able to. Every time I close my eyes its Theo's broken face I see Mayi. My brother rarely expresses any emotions and today he looked so devastated" Mandy was on the verge of tears.

"Hey! It will be alright. You have always said that Theodore was a tough guy. Maybe he will bounce back sooner than we think" Mayi said giving her friend a consoling smile.

"I don't think so Mayi" Mandy looked at her friend "He loved her much too deeply to get over this any time soon"

Mayi felt tongue tied. What could she say for that? A broken heart is not easily healed and if what Mandy said is right, then her brother might be in pain for long.

Waking up the morning after a hectic evening was never one of Mayi's favourite. Nonetheless she had to for her friend's sake. Amanda had a habit of skipping food when she was depressed and last night she was very much so. After lifting her protesting self from the bed, Mayi made her way to the bathroom. Mentally making a list of food items she would make she walked downstairs. Deciding that she needed a half day off she called her assistant.

"Good morning Boss" an infectiously cheerful voice greeted her.

"Morning Louise" Mayi replied back with a little less enthusiasm.

"Everything alright Boss?" her ever perceptive assistant asked.

"Just a little tired Lou, I called to tell you that I am taking a half day off. I will be in the office by four" Mayi replied.

"Okay" Louise replied a little doubtfully. Mayi was sure her assistant was not convinced "Do you need any help?"

"Nothing much Lou, just handle the office in the morning. Anything important, contact me. If someone from my family enquires leave me a message" Mayi said.

"Done boss, don't you worry about anything. I will hold the fort over here; you take rest" Louise replied confidently "Oh and I had send the Ritork deal file to your home yesterday evening. It came in late from your brother's office so I send it with a chauffeur. He said your maid received it."

"Mary must have. It's probably in the living room. I will check right now"

Walking into the living room, Mayi noticed a green file on the coffee table.

"Yeah Louise it's here. Andy wanted me to cross check a few details. Tell his secretary that I will mail it back by mid-morning" Mayi said while surfing through the papers in the file.

"Will do. Anything else boss? Are you sure you are alright?" Louise asked a hint of worry in her voice.

Mayi chuckled "Relax Lou. I am fine. I will dial you first if I need an ambulance"

Louise laughed "One can't be too sure boss"

"Have a good day Louise" Mayi said ending the call and turning around.

She almost dropped the file in her hand. Standing in front of her was Theodore Sinclair in nothing but a white towel. Her eyes widened in surprise before she hastily looked away.

"Sorry to intrude" she heard his deep voice addressing her. Mayi noted that just like his mother he did not mean those words.

"It's alright. I thought I was alone" Mayi said keeping her eyes trained on his face.

He nodded once before heading to the kitchen. Following him Mayi noticed that he had begun making coffee. Though he had freshened up he still looked worn out. Silently she went towards the fridge to get the ingredients for breakfast.

"Do you want anything specific for breakfast?" she asked Theodore, feeling that he could do with some care.

"No I will be leaving as soon as my assistant brings my clothes" he replied pouring the freshly brewed coffee into a cup. Leaning against the counter he began drinking it while completely ignoring her.

Seeing that he wanted to be left alone, Mayi began preparing breakfast. He had a right to be grouchy after all it's not every day that one's heart is broken.

As the young woman got busy in making breakfast, Theodore discreetly watched her. She was no classical beauty. Some would say that she was no beauty at all. She was tall with a voluptuous body and dusky skin. Long black hair framed a slightly plump face.

For all you know she might own a better heart than Sarah a voice said in him.

Theodore almost bit his tongue trying not to curse out loud. Try as hard as he may his thoughts always turned to the treacherous woman who ripped his heart out. He should be shot in the head for believing her, for not seeing through her earlier. She had cost him his heart and also his pride. Both of which wouldn't heal anytime soon. He desperately needed a few days break to escape the media who would no doubt haunt him once they knew of the cancelled wedding and also his mother who was out for his blood. In the meantime he would think of a way of getting back at his ex-fianc.

As he began walking out of the kitchen, Theodore glanced once more at his sister's best friend. What he saw was a photographer's delight. Light rays coming from an opposite window was falling on part of her face. A loose strand of her hair was gently caressing her cheeks. He dearly wished he had his camera with him. The vision was beautiful.

A clearing of throat brought him out of his reverie. The young woman was looking at him questioningly, holding two plates of breakfast in her hands.

"Sorry I just zoned out" Theodore managed to say.

The woman just nodded before passing by him into the dining hall. As she passed he caught the smell of food and his stomach rumbled. He regretted denying her offer to make breakfast earlier as the food smelled delicious.

"Are you alright Mr.Sinclair?" Mayi asked seeing the man rooted to the same spot he was standing on before.

"Yeah, I am fine. Would you have any extra breakfast?" Theodore asked before his pride could get the better of him and also because he was hungry.

Mayi smiled seeing his discomfort. This must be one rare moment for Theodore Sinclair, when he had to change his earlier plans, she mused.

"Off course, I think I have made enough for three" she replied

"Thank you Mayi" Theodore smiled.

Mayi was a bit surprised that he remembered her name.

"Everything was going well Mr. Ritork, then why the sudden change in plans?" Brandon Blair spoke, feeling his irritation rising by the minute. Glancing at his sisters he knew they were all in the same boat.

"Mr Blair as I told you, we are no longer willing to do trade with you. Someone else is offering us a better deal" Mr Ritork said.

"Mr Ritork if it's money you know we can always negotiate" Jessica put in, staring steadily into the eyes of the man having video conference with them.

"It is not just about money Miss Blair. This is something personal for me. I think I have made my point here. Good day to you all"

Mayi cursed in frustration as the conference call was cut.

"What the heck is wrong with him?" Jessica demanded looking at the blank screen.

"How are we supposed to find a land and complete construction of the shelter within time for Mum's birthday" Brandon ran a hand through his blonde hair in frustration.

"Not to mention the fact that those people really need it" Mayi added quietly "God I was so excited about giving Mum this gift"

Mayi's mind flew back to the time she visited the war torn area in Middle East. Having grown up in an orphanage until the age of five she knew some of the hard side of life. As her eyes roamed over the destruction, poverty and desperation of the people who lived in the area she was visiting, she thanked God profusely. Her life was heaven compared to what she was seeing. She hated feeling helpless now. She had promised herself that she would help them. When they were planning for their Mum's birthday, Mayi knew that the perfect gift would be building safe living quarters for people in that area. Her siblings had agreed with her and together they did the necessary to procure the land required. Only now the land was no longer available.

"It's almost midnight guys, I think we should all head home" Jessica spoke after a while rubbing her tired eyes "We will regroup tomorrow and think of something. Let's get in touch with Ritork's company again tomorrow"

Her siblings nodded. Bidding good night to each other they left the Blair Enterprises building.

"Hot chocolate?" Mandy offered her friend as soon as Mayi slumped down beside her on the living room sofa.

"I can use a bucket full. I should have taken the whole day off" Mayi said taking the mug from her friend. Sipping the tasty drink she sighed contently.

"That was heavenly"

"I thought you considered it guilty pleasure?" Mandy gave her a cheeky grin.

"Right now I have zero energy to feel guilty. I will fret about the pounds I will gain tomorrow morning" Mayi replied lying across the sofa and placing her feet on Mandy's lap.

"By the way how are things on your end?"

Mandy sighed "Not good. Mum told the media that the wedding is been postponed due to some issues but that it will definitely happen. Theo, who was already furious, nearly went ballistic and stormed out of Mum's office. He has switched his phone since then and is missing"

"Missing?" Mayi asked feeling a bit concerned.

"Nothing to worry about. He takes these expeditions once in a while. Goes off with his camera to some wild place and turns up after about a week. Right now I am glad he is away because whatever Mum is planning I am sure those two will end up fighting again once he is back"

"Your Mum is planning something. Like what?" Mayi asked her expression confused.

"Mayi you knew about the whole keeping Sarah's identity a secret thing" Mandy asked. She continued when her friend nodded.

"It was Mum's idea. I was surprised at that time that Mum wanted it that way what with her affection for display. I think half the reason why Mum wanted it is because she wanted the deal to remain a secret. With their wedding Mr Thornton was also going to sign a deal with us. For some oil project in Middle East. But now..." Mandy let it hang.

"Sarah Thornton is gone taking with her the project and also handing the ideas of your company to Bill Trenk." Mayi finished it adding the facts that Mandy had shared earlier in the morning with her.

Mandy nodded

"Mum cannot do anything now because Sarah's Dad is much too powerful and he adores his spoilt brat daughter. If we make a statement against them it's going to backfire on us. There is no way we can claim that those ideas are ours now. She managed to get her hands on the bloody blue print and destroyed the copies. Smart b***h, I must say" she finished pursing her lips.

"What is your Mum going to do then?" Mayi asked seeing no way out in the situation.

"I have no clue but knowing Mum it's something really drastic" Mandy's face darkened.

Nidhs, ok.. I thought that giving a new look means changing the track.. but hey you changed the entire thread... Bit disappointed as i have grown to get attached to that.. You know how much i loved the mayi and theo there and their story too...
