"Looks like you had a great evening Andy" Mayi smiled at her brother , her coal black eyes twinkling.
"There are very few females who can resist Brandon Blair's charm" Andy winked at his sister.
"Or maybe they hope to snare one of the wealthiest bachelors of New York" a mocking female voice made Mayi smile. It was fun to watch her sister Jessica word wrestle with their brother.
"Pray tell me what you were doing Jess? I am quiet sure you noticed nothing but what's his name"
" His name was Sean and we just shared one dance. You know I don't do serious relationships" Jess replied back.
Mayi cringed on the inside at her sister's words. She watched her sister's face for any sign of anguish but saw nothing. Jessica had become much too good at masking her emotions. Brandon was watching her as well. Both the siblings wished they could change their sister's past.
"So how's the next gift for Mum coming?" Jessica looked at Andy
"Negotiations are going good. If things go as expected we should have the land by Sunday" Andy replied confidently.
"Let's hope no unexpected surprises come knocking at our doors" Mayi let out a breath.
"What are my kiddos on about?" a middle aged woman asked smiling at them.
"Hey Mum, we were just discussing the party. Quiet a good collection we got" Jess said , smiling back.
"Nothing is going to be too big Jess. Those people need everything they can get. What with constant battle for their life and livelihood." Victoria Blair commented her expression saddening.
"We will put in as much help as we can Mum, don't worry" Mayi squeezed her mother's hand.
She was glad of the surprise gift they had planned; feeling assured that her Mum would love it.
Victoria smiled proudly at her children. Years ago when she took the decision to adopt, after finding out that she could not conceive , she was apprehensive of going wrong. She wanted more than one child and at the same time was afraid of not being able to give a good upbringing. She had gone ahead and adopted children belonging to three different ethnic races. Her son Brandon was from America while from her daughters her eldest Jessica was from China and Mayi from India. Their roots maybe from three different countries but she had raised them to love each other, to be there in need. They have made their fair share of mistakes through the years but nonetheless she was proud of her children. Their bond had grown stronger beyond her expectation.

As she drove her car into the garage Mayi wondered why her best friend's car was in the garage. She shared her pent house with Amanda Sinclair, celebrity news anchor and her best friend. Amanda had gone home for her brother's wedding which was to take place this Saturday. It was one highly anticipated celebrity wedding.
Raised voices greeted her as Mayi entered her house.
"I had no idea Mother, how many times do I have to repeat this" a furious male voice said.
"You should have had better judgement" an icy female one answered.
"Mom that is unfair" a younger tired sounding feminine voice said.
"Mandy" Mayi called out as she moved into the living room.
Three pairs of eyes landed on her. Two of them were identical chocolate brown in colour and shared the same furious expression. The third blue one , her best friend Mandy's, appeared worn out.
"Mayi we" Mandy began but was cut short by her mother.
"Miss Blair I am sorry for this intrusion but we had an important family issue to discuss. I hope you won't mind" Rachel Sinclair, Amanda's mother said.
Her tone suggested that she didn't care what Mayi thought nor was she sorry for the intrusion
Mayi suppressed an urge to retort. The woman was behaving like she owned her house. Mandy had always described her mother as hard to like and Mayi could see first-hand now just why it was so.
" Off course Mrs Sinclair , I will just go to my room. If you need anything please feel free to call me" Mayi smiled at Rachel Sinclair etiquette demanding that she behave.
Mandy scowled at her mother before giving an apologetic smile to her friend. She mouthed 'I will explain later' and Mayi smiled back with a nod
Glancing at Mandy's brother, Theodore, she saw him brooding in a corner. The usually suave Theodore Sinclair looked unhinged. As she passed him on the way to the stairs, his eyes met hers. Hurt was evident in them for a second before he masked it. She gave him a small smile which he ignored. Shrugging to herself she climbed the stairs. Theodore Sinclair had never before paid any attention to her and was most unlikely to do the same when he looked troubled. She hoped everything was fine in the family.
