New Delhi: The Union government is examining a demand for taking back the Padma Shri award conferred on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan in the wake of a Mumbai court framing charges against him.

RTI activist S.C. Agrawal had filed a complaint with the Union home ministry on March 14 this year, demanding stripping the actor of the award conferred in 2010 as the Mumbai court had framed charges against him for alleged scuffle in a restaurant there.

In response to a subsequent RTI application filed to know the status of his complaint, the Union home ministry has replied to Mr Agrawal that "the matter is under examination".

Saif was conferred with the Padma Shri in 2010 for his contribution in the field of art. However, recently-framed charges against Saif and two of his friends, Shaeel Ladak and Bilal Amrohi under section 325 (assault) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

It is alleged that Saif had punched on the nose of a South-Africa based businessman and his father-in-law at a Colaba hotel in February 2012. The Bollywood actor and his two friends have pleaded not guilty after the metropolitan court in Mumbai read out the charges to them in March this year.

While responding to an RTI query by this Citizen Journalist (SC Agrawal), in which demand has been raised to take back Padma Shri award from Saif Ali Khan, the Union home ministry replied that it is examining the entire issue.

Charges have been framed against the Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan by a Mumbai-court for his involvement in a scuffle that took place in a Mumbai-restaurant. The Film-actor is already facing several other criminal cases against him.

The Union Home Ministry should take back Padma award not only from Saif Ali Khan but also from other such controversial persons which surprisingly also included a wilful bank-defaulter!

Further, another RTI response has revealed that Saif Ali Khan was recommended for Padma awards by 'Awards Committee' in its meeting without mentioning name of members of Awards Committee who had recommended his name.

Significantly senior government-officers and eminent personalities from different fields are members of the Awards Committee, and all the recommended names are to be cleared by several intelligence-agencies before being announced for Padma awards on Republic-Day eve.

Name of member of Awards Committee having recommended name of Saif Ali Khan should be made public. Honouring controversial ones with Padma awards give bad name to the prestigious civilian honour.

Probe should also be ordered on functioning of intelligence-authorities which clear controversial names without any proper investigation even though media-reports prominently and regularly appear about awardees involved in criminal cases.
