Lata Mangeshkar released her first album in 17 years but retained an old superstition. Her album, 'Saadgi', was so named because it had to begin with an 'S'. Lata acquiesced to singing again after many years on the condition that the label ensure that.
"T-series approached me for doing an album of ghazals. I was excited only when I heard that Jagjit Singh was to write some of the songs. I called him and asked him to write a song -- the cover -- whose title would start with an 'S'."
The maestro obliged and Indian music's empress began recording again after her last album, Sajda, which was also with Jagjit Singh.
Asked why she hadn't sung for so many years, Lata said: "I wanted to. But during that period the only music on the market was loud and I thought this was not the time to be singing. Now I think again people's tastes have changed and this sort of music will do well again."
Of her singing partner she said: "I know Jagjitji's taste so I didn't hesitate or ask about what it was that he would going to write. We are from the older generation and products of a certain period of time. We share our likes in music."
