Part 13

Deerghatamas--Dhritarashtra-Pandu-Vidur--Animandavya

When Parashuraam Had Wiped Off The Kshatriya Race From The Face Of The Earth, The Women Of The Families Went To The Brahmins For Offspring. This Was How This Race Was Revived.

Bheeshm Narrated To Satyavati A Story With A Similar Moral.

A Long Time Ago, There Was A Rishi Named Utathya. His Beautiful Wife Was Called Mamata. Once When She Was Pregnant, Rishi Utathya's Youger Brother Vrihaspati (The Teacher Of The Gods) Approached Her With His Dirty Intentions. Mamata Stoutly Denied. The Child In The Womb, Seeing That His Uncle Not Prepared To Listen To His Mother, Intervened With His Yogic Powers. Enraged, Devaguru Vrihaspati Cursed The Child To Be Born Blind.

This Child, When Born, Was Called Deerghatamas (The One Always Surrounded With Darkness). He Married A Princess Known As Pradweshi. She Gave Birth To Numerous Sons, But Could Not Stand The Blind Old Man.

One Day, Fed Up With The Fights, She Ordered Her Sons To Throw Deerghatamas Into The Waters Of The River Ganga. King Vali Rescued Him And Took Him Home To Raise Offspring, The King Sent His Queen, Sudeshna, But She Sent Her Nurse Instead. Deerghatamas Gave The Nurse Twelve Children, Who Were Each Learned Brahmins, And Also Blessed The King To Have Five Children Known As Anga, Vanga, Kalinga, Pundra and Suhma, Each Having A Mahajanapad To Their Name.

Hearing This Story, Satyavati Told Bheeshm About Her Eldest Son Rishi Dwaipayan, The Son Of Sage Parashar, And Summoned Him. Vyasa Told Her That The Princesses Would Have To Put Up With His Ugliness And Smelly Surroundings If They Wanted Really Worthy Sons.

With Great Difficulty, Satyavati Convinced Her Daughters-in-law To Go To The Sage. First, It Was The Turn Of Ambika. She Went In, But Closed Her Eyes As Soon As The Sage Came Into View. The Sage Gave Her A Son But Was Greatly Offended.

As Soon As He Came Out, Satyavati Asked With A Smile, "Why Son ? How Powerful Is My First Grandson ?"

"Blind," Came The Reply, Wiping Off The Smile From The Queen's Face, "With The Power Of A Thousand Elephants."

Next Went Ambalika. She Was Cautious Enough to Keep Her Eyes Open, But Could Not Stop Her Skin Going Pale At The Monstrous Sight Of The Great Sage. The Sage Wasn't Pleased With Her Too. This Time The Reply Was, "Why Are Your Daughters-in-law All So Delicate One Closes Her Eyes And One Goes Pale. This One Is Fine, But Will Have A Pale Complexion."

"One More Chance, My Son. Please."

This Time Ambika Was Thoroughly Irritated. "You Go If You Wish. I'm Not Going At Any Cost." She Said To Her Maid. The Maid Did Not Want To Miss An Opportunity. It Was Clear That None Will Marry Her, So Why Not A Child. In Any Case She Had Been Living On The Queen's Alms, On Whatever The Queens Rejected, So What Harm Was There In A Rejected Child ?

She Approached The King With A Confident Smile And Got A Child Who Became The Best Of Men, Endorsed With King-like Qualities And A Clear Sense Of Justice. The Children Were Named Dhritarashtra, Pandu And Vidur.

Bheeshm And Satyavati Looked On As The Next Generation Of Hastinapur's Misfortune Played About In The Royal Garden.

But Who Was Vidur In Reality ?

He Was Dharma, The God Of Justice, Reborn As A Shudra Due To A Curse. There Was Once A King Named Animandavya Who Had Been Engaged In A Severe Penance With A Vow Of Silence. Once A Bunch Of Thieves Robbed A House And Hid Their Goods In The Same Tree Under Which King Stood Meditating. Soon The Soldiers Came After The Thieves, And Inquired Of Animandavya The Path The Thieves Had Taken. But The King Remained Silent Due To His Vows. The Soldiers Then Discovered The Loot Under The Tree And Assuming The Monarch As The Thief, Took Him To The King Of The Land.

The King Ordered Him To Be Impaled And Starved To Death. But, King Animandavya, Through His Ascetic Powers Sustained All The Tortures And Summoned The Other Rishis To The Scene. The Sages Asked Dharma (God Of Justice) About What His Crime was And Was Was He Suffering So Greatly. Dharma Replied Calmly, That Once In His Childhood, Animandavya Had Pricked An Insect To Death, And This Was The Punishment For That. Animandavya Now Spoke Up, "O Dharma, The Lord Of Justice Don't You Know That Any Sin Committed Before The Age Of Twelve Is Not Seen As A Sin But A Mere Mistake ? Thus I Curse You, For Your Mistake, That You Will Be Born As A Shudra In The Earth, And Despite Having All Qualities Of An Able King, You Will Be Deprived Of Your Royal Seat."
