All that of honeymoon and big C led me to this question: are they legally married? Don't get me wrong, I mean, he married her in front of his family, which I am told was perfectly legal back in 70s (source: Dad). Is it considered legally binding? If not we will soon see wedding sequence before the big C.

Yes..because of their cohabitation their marriage is legal..if couple cohabit with each other it will be considered as a valid marriage in the eyes of law.
