To tell the truth initially fusion art forms became popular because of those who were expert in more than one classical forms, like Ustaad Zakir Hussain in tabla or Pandit Ravi Shankar in sitar or the likes. Now a days most of the people are doing fusion more to hide their flaws in any one classical form, weather Indian or Western, but then what can you expect as the judges are not Masters of the art form but are just celebrities.

Shows like JDJ , DID etc run on gimmicks.
bring ek se badkar ek prop
show lifts
make the audience go round eyed with surprise, byas you hit the jackpot, dance gaye bhad main.

I recently watched a DID children epi, where each of the contestants or their skippers were busy throwing bigger and more innovative props, water, water balloon, air balloon, floral garden, swing, you name it, and they do a lot of stretching and call it contemporary and the flexibility of the kids are shown and judges go wah wah, never seen before.

Why can never seen before be pure and untainted dance form? Why do you need so much fushion with bw and gimmick to make things work? These dance forms have been around and have evolved through decades and centuries( ballet, indian classical), without so much additional spice, and people have appreciated them
The true forms are in any case much better than the bollywoodized version they show.

Take the tango, as referenced by topic maker for example. They can use appropriate instrumental music, and that can set the mood and the rest can be done with footwork. Why always song, why always words? words that won't always fit in or go with choreography.

Why the need to use a song like I hate love story to show bharatnatyam? Use a nice modern fushion music, so many are around, bikram ghosh, taufiq quereshi.

There are so many instrumentals floating around, which set the mood and then you can do choreography, why why why use latest inane bw hit song .

Nagada sang dhol baje: a vibrant , lively song and muted into puppetry, offcourse dance will not match up to such a song. Song asks for a totally different dance mood.
USe appropriate song.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

However I differ with the TM on training. No our dancers cannot do what a DWTS choreo can do. A lauren came here and danced to Bharatnatyam, semi classical, classic bw and passed with flying colors, but our dancers always fall short when trying to show basic ballroom moves.

and what passes as contemporary, sadly is mostly yoga and stretching. No soul and technique.

So what is different? AMOUNT OF TRAINING.
for most of them, dancing was a side hobby, passion, which they indulged and took seriously only when they started making money. Very few of them actually study dance as a subject, learn the nuances, the anatomy, physiology of human body to understand the muscles.

Our choreos and dancers do not train so much. Even when they take up dance professionally and are busy performing and choreographing, they do not keep on learning on practising themselves.

A rukmini Vijaykumar even now, practises atleast 4 -5 hours a day. You need to practise in something, learn something to be better.

In a creative profession, you need constantly to learn and make urself better.

and I feel our stars lack it.

not to mention physical fitness, they need to do other sports to increase stamina and fitness too. Only dancing is not enough.

This is the best post so far I read on this forum...Completely agree with you! JDJ can be far better only if they focus on dance more than the baseless comedy we see. Currently I feel JDJ is more of a platform to promote movies, new shows and some unsold comedy and in between all this contestants just dance a bit to entertain!
I really hope sometime we get to see pure dancing in JDJ...no lifts and not even props just floor work, pure chemistry and dance in its purest form. I don't blame the choreos for having so many lifts coz how many times have we seen judges praising pure dance movies over some difficult lifts. It almost feels like a performance without lifts is not appreciated at all...though many times they deserve at most appreciation.
I really hope to see some pure dancing if not from all contestants at least from shakti...I watch this show for her and I really want to see the best in her. I agree with you so for it was only teri dewani that managed to leave a permanent mark...though I loved her other performances as well...but this one was just mesmerizing. Kamil would have been much better if it had more of Tango...the lifts were wow but weren't necessary...Lifts are for people who struggle with their foot work not so much for Shakti...I'm sure she can nail every lift but she can dance even better. There are some of Shakti's solo acts that have been so amazing for the pure dancing shown. I really want Shakti and Tushar to do more of dancing and hopefully the forms in their purest forms.
About couple work...I agree the chemistry b/w couples is missing mainly coz they dance for audience...or for judges. How many times haven't we seen performances ending with someone giving a flower to judges or something like that. They should definitely start dancing for themselves...it would be much better to watch. AKshar do have chemistry but they can be much better...and I want them to be the best!
Judges got to be more strict...Remo at least...expect them too look beyond wow factors, hotness and sensuousness...
I at least hope one of the themes would be presenting any one of the dances in its purest forms...asking particular dance would be unfair for all so any one form...without gimics just dance!

A very nice post, well informative! 👏
And also on the music part i agree, to perform neatly on some specific dance forms it may need a kind of music which is only suitable for it, but many western dance forms can also be choreographed on bollywood songs the right way by a correct song selection. I just don't understand why do that have to mix a certain dance form with a totally diff kind of song, its irritating.😵 Its in no way entertaining or visually appealing for me.Not only in JDJ but I have also noticed it in DID.But oh well. 😆
I had really enjoyed Salman-Isha performances in the 5th season, it was maybe a bit dramatised but it was still better than all those performances which i have seen since then in JDJ.Just very sad to see Salman also not doing anything better. 😔

The problem with JDJ is that it's to much of everything. Making me feel so god damn annoyed. While in DWTS it's more of a "less is more" situation going on. I could only hope it could have xisted on JDJ. The show focuses much more to promote movies and Madhuri dancing with everyone, (no I am not a hater) making me forget what the show is really about.

Completely agree with you. This post is best post I have red in this forum so far.
But JDJ never can match DWTS.
There all the focus will be on contestants and their choreo partner and in JDJ it's focus on everything other than contestant.
No one can be like Meryl and Maxim. They were the soul of DWTS season 18.

this is perhaps the most well put-together post i have seen on this forum.
coming to your points,I wholeheartedly agree with all of them
JDJ has a lot of potential, yet it comes across as mediocre if not shallow with every passing season...honestly,it was much better when it used to be aired on sony!
now it is all about promotions, glamour, gimmicks,OTT drama and everything else apart from dance.
Coming to the judges, what does karan even know about the technicalities of dance?he sees dance in the same way as the coloured lenses through which he makes his movies..
.all glitz n glamour having no content whatsoever.
coming to madhuri, she is a graceful dancer but does she really know about all these dance forms...i highly doubt that...she has never learnt them n neither has she ever performed such high level intricate moves.
I honestly expected remo to be critical and give insightful tips...but now we see, he judges according to some set standards of 'bollywood' in general...and the worst part is that that whatever constructive criticism is handed out by remo is ultimately made fun of for being too technical.
so pray tell me, isn't this supposed to be a dance show?
if someone explains a theory of physics in mathematical terms, will u say that it is too mathematical?
As for the choreographers now, many of them are actually dancers...jdj should understand that a good dancer may not equal to a good choreographer...performing an act and designing it are 2 very different things...the only thing these ppl do is rope in contestants from other reality shows without evaluating their capabilities as an able choreographer.

i find jdj too fake n too showy, wrought with unnecessary gimmicks which insead of enhancing an act, further mar the performance...they put too much attention on everything other than pure dance,be it costumes, set, fusion of many 'it' steps to entertain the audience,etc...u r right, they don't dance for themselves, they dance in the hope of garnering maximum votes from the viewers and that lack of emotional involvement from the act is very much visible which makes it look so very mechanical, ordinary and rehearsed.
