Shows like JDJ , DID etc run on gimmicks.
bring ek se badkar ek prop
show lifts
make the audience go round eyed with surprise, byas you hit the jackpot, dance gaye bhad main.
I recently watched a DID children epi, where each of the contestants or their skippers were busy throwing bigger and more innovative props, water, water balloon, air balloon, floral garden, swing, you name it, and they do a lot of stretching and call it contemporary and the flexibility of the kids are shown and judges go wah wah, never seen before.
Why can never seen before be pure and untainted dance form? Why do you need so much fushion with bw and gimmick to make things work? These dance forms have been around and have evolved through decades and centuries( ballet, indian classical), without so much additional spice, and people have appreciated them
The true forms are in any case much better than the bollywoodized version they show.
Take the tango, as referenced by topic maker for example. They can use appropriate instrumental music, and that can set the mood and the rest can be done with footwork. Why always song, why always words? words that won't always fit in or go with choreography.
Why the need to use a song like I hate love story to show bharatnatyam? Use a nice modern fushion music, so many are around, bikram ghosh, taufiq quereshi.
There are so many instrumentals floating around, which set the mood and then you can do choreography, why why why use latest inane bw hit song .
Nagada sang dhol baje: a vibrant , lively song and muted into puppetry, offcourse dance will not match up to such a song. Song asks for a totally different dance mood.
USe appropriate song.

However I differ with the TM on training. No our dancers cannot do what a DWTS choreo can do. A lauren came here and danced to Bharatnatyam, semi classical, classic bw and passed with flying colors, but our dancers always fall short when trying to show basic ballroom moves.
and what passes as contemporary, sadly is mostly yoga and stretching. No soul and technique.
So what is different? AMOUNT OF TRAINING.
for most of them, dancing was a side hobby, passion, which they indulged and took seriously only when they started making money. Very few of them actually study dance as a subject, learn the nuances, the anatomy, physiology of human body to understand the muscles.
Our choreos and dancers do not train so much. Even when they take up dance professionally and are busy performing and choreographing, they do not keep on learning on practising themselves.
A rukmini Vijaykumar even now, practises atleast 4 -5 hours a day. You need to practise in something, learn something to be better.
In a creative profession, you need constantly to learn and make urself better.
and I feel our stars lack it.
not to mention physical fitness, they need to do other sports to increase stamina and fitness too. Only dancing is not enough.
