Suddenly Panchali saw the blood soaked white dhoti of Arjun------------------(Any one want to do the rest? I havent been able to let go of that particular fantasy😆)
Suddenly Panchali saw the blood soaked dhoti of Arjuna ...
...And her face went pale. Yudhishthira had his hands around Arjuna . Draupadi could not see anything beyond his blood soaked dhoti. Her heart in her mouth, she ran up to them, tears already forming in her eyes.
Taking hold of Arjuna's other arm, Draupadi asked her throat choking, "Oh, you are hurt Aryaputra. Your clothes are all soaked in blood"
Arjuna turned to her in surprise. Draupadi tried to compose herself. She knew warriors like Arjuna did not like their wives to become emotional about injuries, especially in public.
"Krishnaa...I am all right..." began Arjuna but Draupadi could not take her gaze away from Arjuna's dhoti which still had blood dripping from it. All she wanted to was to take him away to the privacy of his tent where she could tend to his injuries.
"Aryaputra.." beseeched Draupadi... "Allow me to take you with me..."
"But Krishnaa..." Arjuna started to speak once again "ask Brother Yuhishtira..."
Something snapped in Drauapdi on hearing these words. Why did the brothers have to consult Yudhishthira on everything? This was the limit. Her beloved was hurt and to look after him, she did not need her eldest husband's approval.
In all these years, she had managed to balance the tightrope walk that was her marriage, never allowing her husbands to feel she may favour one over the other.
But the past few days of War had made her emotionally vulnerable. Feelings, hitherto hidden in the depths of her heart, never acknowledged, now surged upwards.
Furious, Draupadi turned her gaze on Yudhishthira. He too seemed to be stunned by Arjuna's injury and had his head bowed down.
"My Lord" Draupadi said firmly to Yudhishthira, supporting Arjuna's other arm on her shoulder " Aryaputra is seriously injured and I need to take him away to tend to his injuries"
Yudhishthira looked at her shocked but before he could say anything, Draupadi turned her back and began leading Arjuna away. Drauapdi felt a twinge of guilt, but looking from the corner of her eye, she could see Bhima leading Yudhishthira away.
Arjuna too looked backwards but Yudhishthira , shrugging his shoulders, signaled him to carry on.
Draupadi supporting Arjuna's arm on her shoulder amused him. Obviously she hadn't realized her slim body could hardly be of any support to him and he was doing most of the walking by himself.
Despite her anguish, Drauapdi admired Arjuna's capacity to bear pain. During their brief walk, she had hardly heard an ouch' from him. "A kshatriya's training" he had told her in the past.
Back in their tent, Drauapdi seated Arjuna on a reclining couch. She sent word to the physician but apparently he was attending to some other patient. Away from prying eyes, Drauapdi could finally give vent to her emotions. Sobbing, she knelt down and washed his feet. Arjuna relaxed back, wallowing in the soft touch of her hands, her concern for him, her ministerations.
Her hands trembling, Draupadi parted his dhoti, not wanting to see the ghastly wound. Which spear had caused his blood to flow? Was it poisonous? Oh when will the vaidya arrive? Tears were still flowing from her eyes as she parted it still further. But she could not see any wound. His leg was still white and smooth.
"Krishnaa..." came Arjuna's soft voice . She looked above perplexed.
"The wound, Aryaptra...?"
"Was not on my leg, Krishnaa..."
"Then...who was injured?"
"Brother Yudhishthira..."Arjuna replied
Horrified Draupadi sprang up. "Why didn't you tell me earlier, Aryaputra?"
"Did you allow me to speak, Krishnaa?" asked Arjuna smiling . "But now I think, Brother Yudhishthira need you more than me."
Draupadi nodded and practically ran towards Yudhidhthira's tent. She peeped in. Yudhishthira was lying on the bed, his leg heavily bandaged. Mentally kicking herself, she tiptoed in and knelt beside her sleeping husband. She placed her hand on his forehead and murmured "Aryaputra..."
Yudhishthira opened his eyes and on seeing it was Draupadi, smiled, and turned his face towards her.
"So did you treat Arjuna's wound properly, Krishnaa?" he asked his eyes twinkling.
Draupadi looked down and blushed. "Forgive me, Aryaputra"
