Giving in, giving in

There is too much of giving in happening in KB.
First Bua ordered the women to get back into the pallus. Instead of obeying, Daddu should have explained that being sanskari does not mean wearing pallus and how he had advised Anandi to get out of it, and how he had told her pallu was not necessary to prove she had good values and that she had proved by her deeds that she had good values.
Instead, all the bahus dutifully get into their pallus. Anandi who had begun to look so confident and glowing freed of the pallu, now looks dull and hampered.
Next pital plates. Daddu should have again said Bua was free to use pital but rest of family would eat the way they were used to. He should have reiterated that good values had nothing to do with eating out of pital plates, and there was nothing wrong in being open about and adopting different cultures. He should have talked about keeping the windows open to let a million thoughts and influences come in.
When Amol is discovered to have been emotionally tortured, the family should have ticked off bua and refused to yield to her tears. Instead they watch A apologise, and later it seems Amol too will apologise.
Child abuse is a serious issue and they show people apologising to the abuser!! Daddu is seriously wrong in not taking a firm position on this. He keeps talking of his army background.
The defining qualities of army life are accommodation of diversity and progressive outlook.
The monthly cycle. The family should have stood up and said it is a natural, biological event in a woman's life and it is illogical to link it to pollution of religion. Instead of this Anandi will apologise to bua.
What a fall for KB!!. When the family was introduced, they looked so modern. Ira in her stylish handloom sarees and open hair, Meenu so elegantly dressed, the men offering to cook in the kitchen which so impressed Anandi.
Where is that family? Instead we have the worst stereotypes being accepted without anybody questioning them: Women in pallu, family eating out of pital plates, child being allowed to be abused and myths about monthly cycles, are being propagated without being challenged.
If BV CVs think little messages after the episodes constitute protests against these horrid practices, they are wrong. The characters need to stand up and oppose them
And of course, the worst of all. Sanchi putting up with abuse by her rapist in the name of good values. BV has crossed all decent limits in glorifying tolerance of this kind.
I'm hugely disappointed that with time the show is becoming more regressive than progressive.

Wonderful post Rohini. Very well articulated. I so agree with you, when Shekhars were introduced they were a bunch of charming modern people with a style. They were shown as a family who gave importance to cultural values but were progressive in their mentality and adapted to changing times.

Hence I was so hopeful to see a modern progressive Anandi, but instead CVs have turned Shekhars spineless and regressive in the name of tolerance.

Hope we soon see Shekhars with voice and sternness. Don't want to see Anandi and everyone pleasing DB anymore.

you know Missesha,
when they showed Meenu, a widow at that point, offering shagun to Anandi, it was such a beautiful, positive message.
Anandi lighting her mother's funeral pyre, Anandi and Shiv persuading DS and other widows to wear mehendi, these were all such path-breaking progressive gestures. Is the BV we are watching now the same?
Now the message is that reform people with kindness. Anandi did do that with DS but surely different situations need different treatment. DB Bua is a cruel, mean, backward creature today. DS was mean 25 years ago.
The horrifying thing about tolerating a rapist's abuse, what message does it send out? That rape victims should reform their rapists with kindness instead of fighting them?
And why show the married son as being weak towards parents who encourage and help his rapist sibling? How can this be justified in the name of entertainment?

And the supreme irony is: TRPs were high when the show was progressive, and sinking when it is regressive. So the audience better not be blamed for this.

I think, they do not have a story to tell, that is why they are repeating/recycling the old story. Even Ganga's story initially was a recycled version of Gahna's story. A lot of scenes of Sanhi-Vivek are copy of what they already show through Shiv-Anandi. Through DB, they are repeating what DS did two decades earlier. In the process, if they do not mind if they have to show an urban open-minded family accepting the nonsense. There does not seem to any justification to what DB is doing. Even if she suffered in her life does not mean that she is free to torture others.

Agree with you Rohini: Those were some very positive messages and that's when BV made a huge impact. Shekhars were meant to bring a difference in Anandi's life by giving her those wings (progress) through their modern ways, which Anandi had missed out while growing up in a conservative family.

But the show didn't really go that way. Anandi dropped on her career plans and progress to one level down than she was at before marriage. Saanchi was shown as a spoilt girl for no reason... And the story continues to the extent that Shekhar women now wear pallus and eat in pittal thali. Meenu had a voice before and sense of reasoning - now she has lost it.

I am also surprised as to why Saanchi lost her voice. First she was silly and irritating but knew how to safeguard her interest. Now when she learnt the difference of good from bad, she totally lost the most integral part of her character which is to speak up for herself.

Being compassionate is a good attribute but what BV preaches is that being compassionate, kind, sacrificing and not speaking up against family members is the only way to goodness. BV is no longer teaching us to be balanced or self-sufficient, which it did back in those days. It is no more a progressive show.

Of course viewers can't be blamed for losing interest. If anything, makers should be thankful that they are still cashing on viewer's loyalty.

I don't know about others but I was never really impressed with Shekhars from the time they were introduced. They looked too fake and superficial
Meenu who decided that Anandi is not right for Shiv without even knowing anything about her.Just because she couldn't move on in life everybody will be like her

Ira's reason for agreeing for Marriage - If their son who is a collector gets married to a girl who is socially disadvantaged their standing in the society will go up people respect them even more

Daddu - Just wanted his pota to be happy

Alok never took a stand for or against.

This family is not really what I call as progressive.

Especially the women they were regressive wearing a mask of modernity.

How could we forget Meenu taunting Anandi? Saying that she must be very experienced in handling in laws since she had been married before??

Ira's mask came off soon after the grih pravesh when people asked her if her son has some women asked if there is something wrong with their son that he is getting married to a girl who is divorcee

These are all people who appear to be of progressive mind set but when push comes to shove their hidden repressiveness comes out.

It started with Urmi Devi's saga and it went on

Their so called modernity stops at allowing their daughter to roam around freely wearing what ever she wants but it doesn't extend into making sure that she turns out to be an independant woman who can take responsibility for her own life.

When the rape happened Ira and Sanchi had to be coaxed to fight back and fight for justice

Later they are only interested in getting her married and their explanation for it a partner will be able to get her out of this trauma

They never ever thought of helping Sanchi come out stronger enable her to fight back.

This is what is their progressiveness is all about.

They all think they are modern because they don't wear Gahras and veils and they have college degrees

Sadly majority of people seem to associate urban life style with modernity and progressive thinking. Looks like even the members in this forum also think in the same way.

If Urbanlife style college education are symbols of progress abd modernity we won't be hearing cases of Dowry deaths in urban upper middle class families in the real world.

Modernity and Sophistication make people transform themselves to suit the society and surroundings and thrive without losing their own identity and I don't think any of the Shekhar family members barring Mr & Mrs Shivraj Shekhar can be considered as modern or progressive thinking.

May be this is what the CVs wanted to convey don't associate modern out look and progressive thinking mindset with urban life style
