Lovely topic Saba massi, been waiting for this one to come for sometime 😃
I think atleast one major difference between old and new songs is originality. Nowadays, there are soo many remixes being made of original songs, many composers and other people are just taking old songs and 'modifying' them.
Another major difference is.. hmmm.. there are just too many beautiful songs in old generation and new that it's hard to differentiate in this sense.. older generation had more.. tradition? Melody?
Now we hear so many songs with "rock all night" and "i love you baby" that it's getting monotonous.. 😕 Why today's people are doing this, I don't know. IT doesn't add more to the song...
Now not everything about this generation is bad, in fact there are more good things!! Composers like AR Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Ismail Darbar, etc etc.. and the singers too are still keeping up with traditions, melodies, and making more innovative music.
But one thing which I really and truly cannot stand and reallyyyyyyyyyy dislike about today's, or my generation, is remixes..! There is not one remix which I like or particularly listen to because I just don't understand why people have to take such a nice original song and add all other things to it, and not even modifying it in a good way. Even videos and other inappropriate things are being made through remixes.. I firmly believe that they are NOT keeping up with our generation and are NOT creating anything new, because it's NOT something new, it's an old song modified. REmixes don't make the song look better, they just ruin it and lose the complete essence of the song. It's not "cool" or the "hep" thing to do.
ABout comparing old and new singers, the comparison can be justified and can also not be.. many people compare Sonu Nigam to Mohd. Rafi because of the similarity in their voices and Rafisaab is Sonu's idol. But comparing two totally different singers, for example the song "Ae mere zoharajabeen", both Rafisaab and Himesh have sung it (HR's is remixed version, kind of). Can we compare them? No. Because two are completely, completely diff singers from two different times.. so there is always a limit to comparing singers. Singers like Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi, Lataji, Manna Dey are all on completely different levels than today's singers..
Ops, i think i have gone on too much 😳 will add some more!
