I did not have the money to afford a Priyanka Chopra: Shiladitya Moulik
Shiladitya Moulik
Debutante filmmaker Shiladitya Moulik's Hindi feature film Mrs Scooter is part of official selection at New York Indian Film Festival, which began yesterday. An independent film set in a small town in western UP, Mrs Scooter is an unusual love story of a bride and a scooter, both abandoned by the same man.

For a debut effort in filmmaking, the entry at NYIFF, which concludes on May 10, has been a huge boost for Moulik, who says filmmaking has always been his passion. "When I moved to Delhi from Kolkata to work with an advertising firm, I decided to make a film. I was looking for a strong script, when one day my friend and I, chanced upon a scooter at a parking lot in Delhi, with a weird sticker on it that said, 'I hope to meet you soon'. It seemed like the scooter was waiting for the owner to come and pick it up, and from there the story germinated," says Moulik, before sharing the film's story. "There is a woman who gets married, her husband buys a scooter on the same day, and later, he abandons both. The story is woven around the parallel lives of the scooter and the woman, who go through the same situation. It's a very realistic film, of a love story that grows between the abandoned woman and the scooter," he adds.

Mrs Scooter does not feature any Bollywood stars or biggies. "First of all, I did not have the money to afford a Priyanka Chopra or any such lead for my film," explains Moulik, who has done a course in filmmaking from the London Film School, "Also, the plot of the story is such that no big star could have fit into the character, and the cast cannot be different from the characters of the film.

Anjali Patil, a National Award winning actress is playing the lead in the film and most of the others actors are from the National School of Drama (NSD). I shot the whole film in Aligarh in a span of one month."

However, Moulik wants to work with Irrfan in the future. Overwhelmed and excited with the response to his first feature film, he is already working on two scripts. "I have started writing two scripts, I want to devote some time to them, both the scripts are of two different genres," he says adding "I want to direct Irrfan soon, it might happen in my next film hopefully."
